It now only takes the click of amouseto kick-offa playlistwhichcouldincludeanunlimitednumber ofsongsby anunlimitednum-berofartists, thatsan amazingthing.Amazing asthisconvenienceis, it shouldneverbeprioritisedas todiscardquality andsubstance. WithiTunesandother onlinemeansofsharing,discussing,ordownloading music, there is a level of humanity stripped and hidden behind faceless discussionboardsandcheckoutlines.

Follow-up NoBluesfindsthebandsettlingintoamoreconsistentsound.Despitethepositivetitle, singerGarethPaiseyisaslyricallydownbeatasever,butitsthemelodicswellsthatpreventeverythingbecomingtoosuicidal. Harmoniesandviolinsswirlas PaiseywailshiswoesonAsLucerne/TheLow, andCeme-teryGaitslullswithripplingelectronicsthatexistalongsidevariousmetaphorsfordeath.Maturitysuitsthemwell.

BRINGMETHEHORIZON-SEMPITERNALRecentlistenerstoNickGrimshawsRadio1breakfastshowhavebeenwokenwithajoltfollowingthesurpriseadditionofBringMeTheHorizontothestationsplaylist. TheriffsofShadowMosesmaybeastrangeaccompanimenttoyourteaandWeetabix,butitsallpartof theSheffieldmetalbandsbidtobecomeaProperBigDeal in2013.TheirfourthalbumSempiternal ispackedfullofsimilar sucker-punchmoments,with The HouseOfWolves and Antivist typifyingthe albumsmuscular and impressive anthemics. Ready tobreaknoisilyoutof the underground, the quintethavemadeoneoftheyearsmostaccomplishedmetal albums.

FOALS-HOLYFIRELets play a game of word association. Think of Foals and what comes to mind? Artsy, difficult,oblique,precocious, intelligent,volatile,mathletic.TheOxfordgroupsalbumstodate2008sAn-tidotesand2010sTotalLifeForever areeasilyamongthemostinnovativeandintriguingBritishrockrecordsofthelasthalf-decade.ButFoalshavealsofosteredareputationofbeingalittlespiky,of playingabithardtoget.Yannis admitstohavingbeenacontrolfreak. Thisis, remember,thebandwholeft theirbiggestearlysingle,Hummer,offtheirdebutalbum. Youfeelthat theirabilitytofurrowbrowshas, forFoals, beensomethingofapointofpride.

Foals thirdalbumisarecordthatbursts outof thespeakersanddemandstobe loved.YouwillhavealreadyheardInhaler,ashimmyingslow-buildwithaneatYannisfalsettothatsuddenlyandunexpectedlyblowsHolyFireintothestratosphere, andcracklesastheemberssettle.IfyoulikeitwhenFoalsshowtheirteeth,Providence is anothertrackthatll lodgeitself intheMostPlayedpageofyouriTunes.Rhythmicallypugilisticandheavyasallhell, itseasilytheloudestandmostobsceneYannisanddrummer JackBevanthemostoverlookedweaponinFoals arsenal havesoundedsincetheywereknockingdownwallsat OxfordhousepartiesasmembersofTheEdmundFitzgerald.

Though these isolatedbursts of energyare the most immediatelystrikingmomentsonHolyFire,itsthewaythatthealbumasawholeunravels andbloomsthroughre-peat listensthatmarksitasFoals finest momentto date. Inarecentfeature, YannistoldNME, Theresdefinitelyoxygen goingtothebrain, but werenot over-analysingthingswewantedtomakeagreedyrecord.

So, Foals. Artsy. Difficult. Oblique. But no longer.HolyFire bringsnewwordsto mind.Sharp.Emotive. Massive.ItsthealbumTotalLife Forevercouldhave beenbeforetheover-analysinggot intheway. AsYannis putitrecently: TherewasaWoodyAlleninour brainthatneededtobekilled. He gotkilled. HolyFire is that assassin,and theterminal blowisexactedwithclean precision.Woody didntstandachance.
