The Motocross Champion A Story for X
by Dr. Maggie Benedict-‐Montgomery
Lots of people ask me how I learned to be such a
great dirt bike rider.
I wasn’t always as great as I am now. I had to learn and work hard to get so
good.
When I was 11 years old, I learned a trick that I call Stop and
Think.
Before I learned to Stop and Think, I was really good at driving my bike FAST. During races, I tried to go as fast as I could, but I sIll didn’t win. There was always
something that got in my way.
SomeImes I fell behind because I would run into other riders. Other Imes, I would get stuck in the mud. And someImes I would crash because I tried to go too fast.
One day my coach said to me, “You need to learn to Stop and Think. When you feel like you want to go FAST, take a minute to think first about what you
should do and how fast you should go.”
I know it sounds easy, but it’s not. I had to pracIce and pracIce A LOT.
I even pracIced Stop and Think during Imes when I
was off my bike.
Stop and Think helped me decide how FAST I wanted to go.
I’m proud of myself for learning how, and now I’m a world champion motocross rider!
