• The destruction of civility was a major theme in The Lord of the Flies. Roger’s character embodies the darkness that corrupts man’s behavior to create an unruly environment. In the image, Roger’s powerful stance and menacing stare reflects the evil and darkness that corrupts his behavior. Being consumed by destructive behavior, Roger disrupts the harmony on the island through intimidation; his aggression shows how he has become uncivilized. His thirst for destruction continues as he stands in the stream of blood with the knife. By standing in the blood, Roger shows that he doesn’t value life or civilized behavior; he is the boy who is responsible for destroying Piggy, the conch, and the order on the island. Piggy’s broken glasses are floating in the stream of blood. The broken glasses show they have lost perspective and don’t value human life because they killed a person without remorse and can not see the error in their choices. Roger is a driving force behind the destruction and darkness that corrupted the island and destroyed the boys’ sense of civility.
