My Circle I drew a circle when I was young a circle around myself to help me know who to let in. No risks for me, thank you. Then this one odd gal began to draw a circle near me and then began to dance in a spin as she drew and danced that spin and danced and drew and spun paying no attention to where she danced and spun and drew and then she invited me to dance and spin with her and after we’d danced and spun awhile I noticed she’d spun and drawn us both into her circle. Report on A CHUM Town Hall Meeting

Over 60 people came out for discussion Sunday evening about the work of the Commission on the Way Forward and their proposals. We

appreciate the perspectives shared by Dr. Brian Watson, Rev. Chuck Chipman, and Rev. Kalaba Chali.

Here’s a cliff-notes version of the three plans:

One Church Plan-Removes most of the restrictive language in the discipline, allows local churches and local clergy to host and

perform weddings for LGBTQ couples, allows Boards of Ordained Ministry to vote to ordain LGBTQ candidates; compromise

because it does not require clergy or congregations to host same-gender weddings

Connectional Conference Plan-Divides the UMC into 3 branches: Traditional, Unity, and Progressive, each with their own clearly

defined stance on inclusivity, keeps one Council of Bishops and General Agencies

Traditional Plan-Keeps all restrictive language in the discipline, increases repercussions for churches and clergy who take a stand

against denomination

After a time of Q&A, I invited those gathered to offer some feedback through a written poll regarding the three plans by asking those pre-

sent to rate the plans, using the following 1-5 scale.

5: I strongly agree with this plan and it would be thrilling if it passes

4: I agree with this plan and it would be good if it passes

3: I see pros and cons with this plan, but it would be okay if it passes

2: I have a lot of hesitations about this plan, but it would be tolerable if it passes

1: I cannot support this plan at all, and it would be intolerable if it passes

49 of the people present participated in the poll and the strongest positive reaction was to the One Church Plan. In addition, almost 100% of

those polled at CHUM, found the Traditional plan to be intolerable.

The General Conference will meet for a special session in February 2019 and vote regarding these plans. The Great Plains Conference has 6

clergy and 6 lay delegates. Those who will represent us include:

Rev. Adam Hamilton, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, Kansas

Rev. Amy Lippoldt, Basehor United Methodist Church, Basehor, Kansas

Rev. Mark Holland, Sabbatical, Kansas City, Kansas

Rev. Zach Anderson, Goodland First United Methodist Church, Goodland, Kansas

Rev. Cheryl Jefferson Bell, United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, Kansas

Rev. David Livingston, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Lenexa, Kansas

Courtney Fowler, College Avenue United Methodist Church, Manhattan, Kansas

Oliver Green, Asbury Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Topeka, Kansas

Shayla Jordan, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Wichita, Kansas

Dixie Brewster, Milton United Methodist Church, Milton, Kansas

Lisa Maupin, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Lincoln, Nebraska

Wesley Gately, First United Methodist Church, Wamego, Kansas

If you wish to encourage their support for one of the plans, you may email them at [email protected]

You are also invited to join us in two upcoming opportunities for discussion and learning.

Peace,

Pastor Jill

Mark Holland of Mainstream UMC (formed to fund, staff and organize a global campaign to pass the One Church Plan) will lead a presentation focused specifically on the One Church Plan and how it allows the context of the local church to determine the scope of their ministry with LGBTQ persons. The One Church Plan would free CHUM from any restrictions in their ministry with LGBTQ persons. The event at 2:00 pm will be open to CHUM and other UM churches in our area (invite your friends from other UM churches). In addition, Rev. Mark Holland will be our guest preacher at both CHUM worship services that morning.
