Oona King was MP for Bethnal Green and Bow between 1997 and 2005, and stood for the Labour selection to be mayor of London. She is a Baroness and Member of the House of Lords, and former Chief Diversity Officer of Channel 4.

Talented saxophonist and double MOBO Award winner YolanDa Brown has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Arts by the University of East London on 2 December 2010 at the Barbican, alongside human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger and Time Out editor Mark Frith.

In 1987 Diane Abbott made history by becoming the first black woman ever elected to the British Parliament. She has since built a distinguished career as a parliamentarian, broadcaster and commentator.

Diane is founder of the London Schools and the Black Child initiative, which aims to raise educational achievement levels amongst Black children. She hosts an annual conference for educators, children and their parents and an annual academic awards ceremony.

Kanya Kingis the CEO of the Mobo Organisation. She worked her way up from a television researcher and a booker for Radio 2 to being the driving force behind one of Britain's most successful music awards. The annual Mobos - - celebrate Music of Black Origin and are now in their 11th year. She also publishes the Mobo Magazine and has appointed Terry Mansfield, formerly of the National Magazine Company, to work on that project. She is the youngest of nine children and grew up in north-west London with a Ghanaian father and Irish mother.
