FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRINCIPAL

Student Leaders Badges We have several very proud students who have secured leadership positions at our College. As is our usual practice we invite the Mayor of Wyndham to attend a special Assembly where the badges are presented and photos are taken. Due to the availability of the Mayor this Assembly will be held on Friday the 22nd of March at 9 am at Derrimut Heath and 10am at the Tarneit campus.

College Evacuation Each Term we have an evacuation practice and for Term 1 we will simply be practising a Lock Down of each school. This will mean that the bell will ring a little earlier than usual and children will walk calmly into the room and settle quietly while we check the security of each building. Then in the following terms we do an out of building evacuation and an out of school evacuation. I will let you know about these and it is always a good idea to talk to your children, especially the Prep children, about this procedure and reassure them that all is fine and they just need to listen to their teacher.

Book Boxes I appreciate the fact that most families have collected the Book Boxes that students need to begin the school year. Some people decided to get their own supplies and that is fine except that there is a need to supply other items so that all children have access to shared classroom requisites. The costs associated with the Book Box also included funds needed to ensure that the Food and Wood technology program can run successfully for all students and that all students can have access to Mathletics and other such programs that come at a cost to the College.

Inappropriate Student Behaviour From time to time we have a situation where adults have been unhappy with student behaviour and decided to take action. We insist that you bring to our attention the behaviour that is of concern and allow us to deal with the situation. Tell us if our students are behaving in an unacceptable manner just outside the school grounds or before and after school within the grounds. We do not tolerate bad language, rudeness nor aggressive behaviour that results in physical fighting, it will incur a formal suspension.

Bullying Behaviour Please be aware that we have a zero tolerance towards bullying behaviour. Please ensure that your child reports any behaviour that makes he or she feel unsafe at school. We have a wonderful program called Peer Mediation operating at Baden Powell College and your child should understand that the Peer Mediators are in the school yard to help them at any time if they feel unhappy or unsafe. Chat to your child’s teacher or to a member of the College leadership team if you have concerns about bullying at Baden Powell College. A significant issue for us at times is the impact of antisocial behaviour on Social Media after school hours. I would ask that you be very vigilant if your child uses social media, and remind them that if they cannot say something face to face then Facebook is not a good idea either!!

Value- Relationships During the month of February we continue to teach your child strategies to help them make and keep friends. We are encouraging the students to show cooperative, caring and considerate behaviours and to understand that honesty, trust and loyalty are important in developing positive relationships with new people. In reality children learn these behaviours from birth and you play a very important role in the social development of your children. I encourage you to talk about making and keeping friends with your child and to always model the behaviours that you expect them to show. We say that Fabulous Friendships Begin in February.

Staff Car Park The Staff Car Park is for staff only and on any given night of the work week teachers are travelling to and from our two schools to attend meetings. Please do not park in the Staff Car Park from 7:30 am until 5:30 pm. Please also be aware that some parking spaces are designated for certain people so do not park in those places.

Also, if your child is missing their glasses please enquire at the front office.

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Baden Powell College we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. Seasons for Growth is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills, to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and maintaining a support network. Seasons for Growth runs for eight weeks and each weekly session is approximately 40-50 minutes. There is no cost for this voluntary program. This program runs at both campuses across the year. Students are grouped into age and developmentally appropriate levels. If you feel your child would benefit from this program, please chat with your child’s class teacher. If you would like your child to participate, please fill in the tear-off section below and return to their teacher as soon as possible. You will be contacted when an appropriate group is to commence. Kind Regards, Sam Mahoney Social Worker I____________________________________________________________ give consent for my child _______________________________ from grade_____________ to attend the Seasons For Growth Program. Breakfast Club and the Students of Baden Powell College Thanks You

Baden Powell College breakfast is on every Tuesday and Thursday morning at both campuses. Your child can enjoy cereal, muesli, baked beans, (oats in winter), toast and/or fruit salad. We sincerely thank our sponsors for their ongoing support. Without the support of the magnificent Let’s Feed, Reliance, epc.PACIFIC, Harmony Residential, Pronto Earthworks and Foodbank, we would not have been able to provide for the many students who enjoy breakfast at school. We sincerely thank you for your continued support from the staff and students of Baden Powell College.
