DIALECTIC JOURNAL REQUIREMENTS:The dialectical journal is a system of note taking that involves the reader in the story. It will help you to read critically and encourage reflection on the reading. The focus for the journal should be examining elements of style such as the use of dialect, specific diction, tone, and imagery. Each of these elements is used for a particular effect, and you are meant to comment on what these intended effects are. You may also consider the rhetorical triangle of logos, pathos, and ethos as well as the impact of figurative language. Feel free to use the following stems, or to create your own while writing.

Sample journal stems to move you in the right (rhetorical) direction:O ____ (rhetorical device) is used to ______.O The author’s purpose with this quote is to…O The author’s organization begins with _____, moves to ______ and finally to _______ showing ____.O The author uses strong diction here to…O The details in this quote serve to …O The author uses _________ point of view to …O The author uses ________ figurative language to __________.O The author uses _____ and ____ tones to…O The author juxtaposes these two ideas/styles/techniques to…O The author’s syntax moves from _____ to _____ in order to ______ , revealing _____ about the passage.

**In order to demonstrate the proper quality of reflection and analysis, entries should be a solid paragraph—about half a page each.

Quote and Page Citation analysis of the quote’s stylistic significanceShips at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men.

Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly. (1)

Hurston’s juxtaposition of the dreams of men in contrast to the dreams of women is signified by the movement from concrete imagery to abstractions. She describes men’s dreams as cargo on a ship which is at the mercy of the tide, while women’s dreams are likened to memory and truth. In contrast to traditional stereotypes, here, women are more likely to act on their dreams while men are more dependent on outside forces. In terms of structure, she uses separate paragraphs to further emphasize the differences between men and women.

NOTE: Make a conscious effort to include specific references to rhetorical strategies, syntax, diction, tone, rhetorical devices, style, etc. This focus of your entries is NOT comprehension (but you can ask questions) or summary, but rather HOW Hurston has crafted a text of significance using specific techniques, WHY those techniques, and TO WHAT PURPOSE/EFFECT.

You are expected to annotate in your text in order to demonstrate active reading. You can mark profound moments, questions, confusion, and note rhetorical/stylistic devices to comment on in your dialectical journal.
