The world is throwing one huge party in London right now. Every four years we come together to celebrate the greatest event on earth…the Olympic Games. It was estimated that over four billion people watched the amazing opening ceremony of the London Olympics last week, making it the most watched event ever! What an occasion! What a celebration! What an awesome display of nationalism, with each country going head-to-head in competitive sporting events, to have the bragging rights over each other for the next four years. Ultimately, it’s a celebration of coming together as the human race, and being part of something bigger. And it’s a beautiful thing to watch what is humanly possible within each of us. Man’s inner essence, his strength and magic!
Vince Lombardi said, “I believe in God and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victories.”
Watching these exceptionally conditioned athletes, we all recognize greatness when we see it. We love to hear the sacrifices the winners had to make to achieve gold. We love to understand their will to win, and what enabled the gold medalist to be a split second faster and stronger than the silver medalist.
Not many of us are willing to sacrifice that much to reach greatness. In our instant gratification world, we want what we want now, however, when we watch the Olympics, there seems to be recognition of the sacrifice that an athlete paid to peak at their sport. Deep down inside, we all have that magnificent obsession in us, which we can reach for. When we finally realize what drives us, we too can peak.
Winning is not a sometimes thing, it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.
During these 17 days of the Olympics, let’s celebrate the beauty of the Olympic spirit. The whole planet is captivated when the countries of the world come together to compete with their best warriors. I know I am not alone when I say, “I love the Olympics,” even right down to the battle of who will be host. It shows that as a species, we are good and strong, and we are survivors.
The Olympics is the most venerated sporting challenge in the world. It is the most respected and revered sporting event on the planet. As Americans, we send out our best athletes wearing red, white and blue and we swell with pride. Every country wants to win. Everyone wants to be a winner! But what the Olympics reminds us is that sometimes winning is not just about finishing first. The Olympics reminds us that real victory lies in participating sportingly. They say it’s not the color you leave with, rather, the color you arrive with that embodies the Olympic spirit. The spirit of sportsmanship and compassion for others success makes each of us a winner, whether we hold a medal or not.
Although we all can’t be the best at a particular sport, we can all have our magnificent obsession!
