Commuter stands up for woman ‘racially abused’ by trioA REGULAR commuter took a stand againstthree men allegedly racially abusing a woman atDandenong railway station last week.

Kait O’Callahan said that while she was wait-ing for a train home said she was shocked to wit-ness a Maori woman in her 20s told to ‘‘go backto your country’’ by the men about 4.30pm onMay 29. They also hurled abuse ‘‘in slurredvoices’’ involving sheep, taxes and Kiwis.

She said the woman retaliated with insultswhile bystanders stared in silence.

Ms O’Callahan, not wanting to be ‘‘someonewho didn’t do anything’’, decided to console theupset woman rather than go ‘‘blindly into a con-frontation’’ with the men.

Two teenage boys then joined her in support.‘‘Three people was all it took for the men to

realise she was not alone. They soon backed off,’’Ms O’Callahan wrote in a statement to theJournal.

‘‘As a white New Zealander, I didn’t think thesting of racism was something I’d ever feel.

‘‘But there I was, watching a countrywomanbeing bullied by complete strangers because ofwhere she was born. Even though I was not theirdirect target, I felt their insults too.’’

She urges other commuters to adopt a similarstance in the face of racial slurs.

‘‘Simply by letting the victim know you are ontheir side, we can help others to feel less alone

and make Australia a better place. By supportingeach other, by speaking up or merely standingclose, we can make bullies feel smaller.’’

Despite a recent string of high-profile racialabuse incidents on public transport, neitherMetro Trains nor Public Transport Victoria areplanning any public education campaigns on theissue.

Inspector Ron Gardner, who is Dandenongpolice’s community engagement manager, advises commuters to be assertive against suchbullies.

‘‘The general advice is if your safety is not atrisk, the community can make it known that [theabuse] is not acceptable.

‘‘You can tell them to ‘cut it out’. There’s noth-ing wrong with yelling out: ‘If you don’t stop, I’llcall the police’.

‘‘If you’re in a position to offer support, do so.But be mindful of your safety.’’

Racial vilification, which incites hatred, seri-ous contempt, revulsion or severe ridicule againsta person because of their race or religion, isillegal in Victoria.

— Cameron Lucadou-Wells

Anyone who suffers racial abuse should report

the incident to their local police station. To read

Kait O’Callahan’s full account, go to

The pain of Aspergers

Crushed hope: Leanne holds a journal entry revealing her son’s depressed state.Picture: Wayne Hawkins

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A HEARTBROKEN Endeavour Hillsmother said there were no suitableschools for her son who has Aspergersand has been routinely bullied at twoschools.

‘Leanne’, who doesn’t wish her, herson or the school to be identified, saida similar plight was endured by hun-dreds of other parents and their chil-dren with Aspergers.

She said her nine-year-old son,‘Sean’, once so happy at kindergarten, had become depressed through school.

His self-esteem had plummeted to“nothing’’, to the point that he listshimself in a loser’s column and writesin his diary that he’s sad, lonely, miser-able and humiliated.

‘‘I’m stuped [stupid],’’ he writes.Sean is at his second primary school,

having endured unbearable social isol-ation and repeated taunts about hissports skills, his writing, his drawing, even his colouring-in.

“Many times he has come home in

tears. No one wants to play with him.He has sat at a table at lunchtime andno one sits with him,’’ Leanne said.

“It’s heartbreaking. It gets to thestage I’m nearly too afraid to ask whathappened at school that day becauseit’s so cringing.

“The current school [staff] is sup-portive and do implement strategies tohelp, but there’s only so much they cando. There’s a lot of teasing. Kids say tohim: ‘You suck! You make our teamlose’.’’

Leanne fears the bullying will getworse when Sean reaches high school.

Like many children with Aspergers,he becomes a target for schoolgroundabuse because of his social naivete andpoints of difference.

He can’t enrol in a specialist schoolbecause his below-average IQ of 76 isstill too high for the 70 IQ threshold.

Nor does he qualify for a fundedteaching aide to help him at a main-stream school. Under the state educa-tion department’s disabilities fundingcriteria, his verbal skills are considered

too high. “I would hire a full-time aideif I could afford it,’’ his mother said.

“They need to remove that criteriato help kids with Aspergers. Maybeeven build a specific Aspergers sectionat a school — just provide the main-stream schools with the resources.

“Give these kids somewhere to go.’’Murray Dawson-Smith, chief exec-

utive of ASD advocacy and supportgroup Amaze, said children with Asp-ergers were commonly bullied.

“They behave differently but lookthe same as other children’’ he says.‘‘So they are thought of as ‘fair game’.’’

He said the criteria were excludingmany children who needed help.

‘‘They may be able to express them-selves verbally but they may have noidea what they are saying.’’

Schools were ‘‘making an effort’’but teachers needed training toidentify and support children withASD.

Education Minister Martin Dixontold the Journal there were no plans toloosen the criteria.

"We work with parents to come upwith a program with the resourceswe’ve got and for what’s best for thechild — that’s the main thing in theend.’’

He said funding had increased forstudents with a disability, plus$40 million was invested in trainingmainstream teachers to ‘‘deal with andrecognise students with autism’’.

Re: Asylum seekers swamp aid centreWho needs the flat-screen monitors? The asylumseekers or the office? Why should asylum seekers begiven flat-screen monitors when a lot of Aussiescan’t afford them? I do not like the way our countryis being taken over. They are illegal asylum seekers.Send them home — they are opportunists! Theasylum seekers who have been waiting in camps foryears are the ones who should be here.

Re: Community groups ‘miss out’Of course, the infrastructure of Dandenong is notenough nor is it keeping up with progress. It is oldand outdated. Look around Dandenong.

There are now tall new buildings constructedand, not too far out, more and more new housing isbeing built and Dandenong is already on the way tobeing a regional centre. Unless community centresare remodelled and updated, the communitywill suffer.

Jerry Lee (via web)

The maternal and child health centre is so awful Istopped taking my little boy there. We now go toNoble Park, even though it’s further. There wasn’t

even a proper change-room with taps and a nappybin. No wonder mums don’t take their bubs for alltheir check-ups!

Ally D (via web)

The current library and council offices will soon bevacant. I would have thought these buildings couldhave easily been earmarked for this. Will be inter-esting to find out what our council has in mind forthese — no doubt it will be a cash cow rather thancommunity-focused. Hope I’m wrong!

Kim R (via web)

I agree with Cr Matthew Kirwan in his campaign tourgently build a new community hub in Dande-nong.

The main street may be improving, but the com-munity services facilities that the residents them-selves use are too small and very out of date.

Especially so with an expected populationincrease due to increased medium-density develop-ment, which will mean more children for maternaland child-health services and more need for a largerneighbourhood house — not one sized for a smallcountry town that Dandenong used to be.

Council’s backflipon shopping jeepsBY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A PENSIONER deliberately abandoned dur-ing a community bus shopping trip may haveearned ultimate victory against Greater Dan-denong Council.

Tomorrow night, councillors will vote on areport recommending to overturn a ban onshopping jeeps for the pensioner trips.

In a stunning turnaround, the council mayalso offer free jeeps to pensioners using theservice.

The limit on shopping bags will be liftedfrom one to two per passenger.

The eight-month review was sparked byDandenong North pensioner Grace Willans, who took the council to the VictorianHuman Rights and Equal Opportunity Com-mission over the ban and her treatment by acommunity bus driver last year.

On October 5, the bus collected her andher jeep from home and dropped her off atWaverley Gardens shopping centre.

But on the return leg, the driver told her no

such jeeps were allowed — and she could notboard the bus.

Ms Willans, 82, and legally blind, asked ashop owner to direct her to a taxi rank, where she rang and waited two hours for acab.

Last week, she was reluctant to claim vic-tory until she sees the council’s jeeps on the11-seater community bus.

She said she’s since received plaudits forher Rosa Parks-like (US civil activist) stand.

‘‘Two old ladies on the bus gave me a kissand a hug and said they’d been waiting forthis for a long time. ‘When are we going toget our jeeps?’ they said.’’

Ms Willans, who had used the service witha jeep for six months before the incident, wants to know who ordered the jeep ban inthe first place — ‘‘whoever did it was sittingon their brains’’.

In February, Greater Dandenong com-munity services director Mark Doubledaytold the Journal that jeeps were bannedbecause of occupational health and safety.

MYVOICE

A community voice lives on

MARG STORKA MOMENT WITH MARG

HAD he been alive today Greg Dickson, former owner/editor of the Dandenong

Journal, would be relieved that the newspaperto which he devoted so much of his life, continues as a strong voice for the community.

He would also be thrilled that the Journal

will be a highlight of the DandenongHistorical Society’s 50th anniversarycelebrations this Saturday.

Greg was a foundation member of thesociety, joining the committee in 1964. Hewas assistant secretary from 1965-72, publi-city officer in 1973-74 and research officerfrom 1984-92. From the society’s viewpoint,he is perhaps best remembered for hiscontribution as editor of its magazine Gipps-

Land Gate for 22 years until his death in1993. He was honoured with a life member-ship of the society in 1984.

I remember typing Greg’s historical societynotes on my trusty old Remington typewriterin the happy days at the Journal office — aweatherboard building — at 1 Scott Street,Dandenong.

I recall the long queues of people late onWednesday afternoons waiting to buy the72-page Journal for the princely sum of two-pence (2 cents).

Born in Foster, South Gippsland, Greg wasthe second child of Wilfred and Flora Dickson, who bought the Ouyen and North WestExpress newspaper in 1918. Wilfred becameill a few years later so Greg and his mothertook over running of the newspaper.

Greg left school to help his mother and at 13reported on club sporting results. By 14 he wasalso acting assistant secretary of OuyenRacing Club.

Greg married Daphne (Zig) Zerbst atOuyen in 1939 and they were happily marriedfor 54 years. Prior to their marriage, Greg’smother sold the Ouyen paper and Gregdecided to buy the Dandenong Journal.

With the help of his wife, and brother Des,Greg turned the Journal into a provincialpaper with one Victoria’s largest circulations.

In 1962 he sold the paper to Cumberland

Newspapers but was a contributor up until theweek of his death.

I was proud when the lane beside 1 ScottStreet was named Dickson Lane.

From their first house in King Street, Gregand his wife Zig moved to a new home inPultney Street.

Greg cared for Zig with devotion when shewas unwell in the latter part of her life. Sadlyhe pre-deceased her.

As a journalist and publisher Greg wasgreatly respected. He did not believe insensationalism. His reporting was concernedwith people and he took a genuine interest intheir daily lives, their ups and downs and allaspects of community life. As well as beingeditor of Gipps-Land Gate, Greg was instru-mental in arranging to have Reminiscences of

Early Dandenong reprinted, and the publica-tion of the Grand Old Lady of Dandenong, ahistory of the Dandenong Town hall.

Greens may oppose unitsBY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A FIGHT is growing over the future of a for-mer gardening nursery site in SpringvaleSouth.

The owner of the former TreeplantersNursery site last year submitted to GreaterDandenong Council an application for a$6.9 million 66-unit building, including 28double-storey townhouses.

The site, at 530-534 Springvale Road, neighbours a three-storey Bright MoonBuddhist Society temple.

The Dandenong Greens branch is set todecide tomorrow night whether to insteadback a campaign for community gardens atthe one-hectare site.

The vision entails using the existing build-ing as a community centre, which could trainunemployed people in courses such as lifeskills and horticulture, using the nursery’scopious plots for the gardens. The plots andmeeting rooms could also be shared by theregion’s residents and community groups.

Greens regional convener Nina Springle(pictured) said the party’s stance was sparkedby neighbouring residents’ opposition to theapartments.

There was a need for a community hub inSpringvale South, she said. ‘‘It’s the perfect

place for gardens. This region could be likeCERES environmental park — it could be anamazing contribution to this community. Itcould be a centre for job creation, vocationaltraining, and linking youth to job networks.

‘‘All the community-building stuff comesfrom having strong, vibrant communityspaces.’’

A Greater Dandenong spokeswoman saidthe council was awaiting ‘‘further informa-tion and documentation to support [theapplicant’s] proposals’’. ‘‘No timelines on adecision can be given because at this stagefurther information remains outstanding.’’

Friends do their bitBY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A GROUP of volunteers is opening its vans, homes and hearts to support surging num-bers of refugees and asylum seekers inGreater Dandenong.

Friends for Refugees (FOR), based atSpringvale Uniting Church, is a diverse mix:a former lawyer, a priest, a former journalist,a qualified architect, a former union organ-iser and a social worker.

It’s collecting food, mattresses and provi-sions to help provide for a ‘‘looming human-itarian crisis’’, as journalist Trevor Grantputs it.

He expects thousands more asylum seekerswill head from detention centres to com-munity detention in the south-east from July1, further stretching already-swamped reliefservices.

Last month, an overwhelmed AsylumSeekers Centre stopped registering individualasylum seekers on bridging visas for foodassistance.

Mr Grant said Friends for Refugees was al-so a voice for the ‘‘voiceless’’ forced to ‘‘liveon thin air’’.

Living on a $200 weekly stipend, the asy-

lum seekers in community detention are notallowed to work. They are given shelter butvery few provisions for six weeks, while theyfind private accommodation.

The result are three or four-bedroomhouses crammed with up to 17 people, shar-ing one toilet.

As previously reported by the Journal inMarch, a 20-week pregnant Iranian womanwas ‘settled’ into an unfurnished house inGreater Dandenong. Without a bed or blan-kets, she was left to sleep on the floor.

Volunteers found her a mattress that shecouldn’t afford to buy. Since the story waslater detailed in the Sunday Age the grouphas been flooded with donations across Mel-bourne but has a shortage of storage space.

The group’s co-ordinator and former law-yer Helen Goodman said she was driven tohelp out of feeling ‘‘ashamed’’ at asylumseekers’ treatment — such as a nine-year-oldboy driven to self-harm after four years in adetention centre.

Other FOR group members are ReverendPaul Creasey, Bill Deller, Sri Samy andDwayne Leslie.

The group needs storage spaces, vans, drivers and administrative volunteers. To

FEATURESTORY

Going the extra mile to help

Three Greater Dandenong community stalwarts have been recognised in today’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLSand CATHERINE WATSON spoke to them about their outstanding contributions to the community.

Grassroots: Roz Blades and Terry. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Holding court: Graham Don at Springvale Learning

and Activities Centre. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Agrassroots councillor has made a name forgoing beyond the call of duty.Roz Blades, a three-time mayor of

Springvale and Greater Dandenong, has servedas a councillor for 23 years. Outside of her civicduties, she has also helped launch and lead a longlist of community groups in Noble Park andSpringvale.

She’s a member of Springvale Community Aidand Advice Bureau, Springvale and DistrictHistorical Society, Noble Park CommunityAction Forum, Springvale Benevolent Societyand the Interfaith Network of City of GreaterDandenong.

There’s a long list of former involvements, including helping to set up South Eastern RegionPolio Support Group.

Today, she has been announced as a Memberin the General Division of the Order of Australiafor her ‘‘significant service’’ to local governmentand Greater Dandenong.

Cr Blades, a former community nurse, was‘‘astonished’’ by the honour that she says ‘‘is notabout me’’.

‘‘I have been fortunate to be elected by thismarvellous community. I want to do it to makelife better for people.’’

Since migrating as a 20-year-old with husbandTerry from England on the ‘10 pound Pom’immigration program, she’s been determined to‘‘give back because Australia has given ourfamily so much’’.

She helped out at her sons’ kindergartens andschools, and pitched into a safety house program, organising from home as she looked after thekids. She joined other volunteers in building anadventure playground at Burden Park, helping toraise thousands of dollars.

‘‘Whenever I drive past [the playground] andsee families there, I get a kick out of that.’’

As she says, nothing happens without hardwork. Since she was first elected at City ofSpringvale Council in 1987, she has kicked goalsof introducing free parking for gold-cardveterans in Greater Dandenong, advocating forbetter public transport and fewer level crossingsand for better community facilities such as therecently-awarded Noble Park Aquatic Centreand Noble Park Civic Space.

‘‘I’m in the council to get stuff done,’’ she said.

Graham, tireless volunteerIT’S not for nothing that Graham Don has beenfeted with the title ‘The King of SLAC Castle’.

For the past 39 years, he has been at the helm ofSpringvale Learning and Activities Centre — a hubfor students, card players and basketballers.

His voluntary work keeps him occupied in hisbackyard office — its walls plastered with certific-ates of recognition — for eight hours a day, sevendays a week.

The community service has earned him aneagerly-awaited Medal of the Order of Australia.‘‘It’s a relief actually,’’ he said. ‘‘I was hopeful I’d getrecognised last year. When it came I was so happy.’’

Mr Don reckons that without the work, he’d bedead. He started helping at SLAC — the formerSpringvale Community Centre — as a parent at thecommunity youth club in 1976. He hasn’t leftsince, plying countless hours as an executive mem-ber and maintenance man.

A former naval cadet, he served in the commu-nications unit on the fateful HMAS Melbourne —though thankfully ending his service before the air-craft carrier’s fatal collision with HMAS Voyager in1964.

He volunteers as welfare and pensions officer forthe Naval Association of Australia, having alsoserved on the association’s executive.

As the slogan plastered on his car states: ‘OnceNavy, Always Navy.’

A proud principalTHERE’S a pupil who sticks in Kevin MacKay’smind, one of many.

This was a rough, tough kid when DandenongNorth was a rough, tough place. He threw hisweight around, disrupted the class and made lifehard for the teacher. Dandenong North PrimarySchool school had a reputation for handling diffi-cult kids but nothing worked with this boy.

In the end, Mr Mackay said to him: ‘‘You can’tgo back into that class until you promise me you’regoing to behave.’’

‘‘Up yours,’’ the kid said, or words to that effect. So they put a desk in the corridor. You could dothat with naughty kids in those days. After 80 days,he was still sitting there. The teachers thought hewas going to sit there forever. Then one day hecame to Mr MacKay and said, ‘‘I’m ready towork’’. And he did.

Years later, he rocked up to the school. MrMacKay was still principal but the kid was now aman. He was working as a brickie and he hadmuscles everywhere. He rushed up and hugged MrMacKay. Then he told him a story.

He was in Brighton one day when a semi-trailerclipped the corner and hit a woman beside him andsevered her leg. He had cradled the dying womanuntil the ambulance came. ‘‘I did it because Iremembered what you did for me,’’ he said. ‘‘Ithought here’s something I can do to pay it back.’’

Today, Mr MacKay receives a Medal of theOrder of Australia for services to education, inparticular his 27 years as principal at DandenongNorth.

For all the honours he’s received, it is hearing

stories like this that makes him proudest. He hadalready been at 13 schools, including the Langi KalKal Youth Training Education Centre, when hearrived at Dandenong North in 1984. Back thenthe school had such a bad reputation that therewere only 380 pupils.

‘‘It was a pretty wild place. There were machetefights in the street, occasional assaults on teachersand we’d spend every Monday cleaning up afterthe vandals.’’

These days there are about 600 pupils and theschool’s results are so outstanding that it has beenthe subject of several studies and multiple minis-terial visits.

Eighty-one per cent of the pupils come fromnon-Anglo backgrounds and 42 per cent of famil-ies are in the bottom quarter of educational advant-age, but it outperforms most schools in moreaffluent areas. ‘‘The teaching is fantastic becausethe children are so well behaved. You’ve got tohave that in place before you get to the teaching.’’

The transformation was a gradual one — ‘‘thefirst step was to get the kids under control’’.

He introduced a behavioural managementprogram, based on rewarding good behaviourrather than punishing bad behaviour. Pupils areawarded badges, raffle tickets and house points forgood behaviour.

Mr MacKay says a very experienced staff is theother factor. ‘‘I’m not the only one who’s stayedhere for a long time — we have a very stable staffand they are very experienced at teaching childrenwhose first language is not English.’’

Last week one of the younger pupils wrote him aletter headed ‘‘Why Mr Mackay is a good prin-cipal’’. It ends: ‘‘because he’s a nice-hearted man’’.

He says the little girl who wrote it gave him awatch. ‘‘I know the family doesn’t have muchmoney. I’ll wear that watch every day!’’

Looking at his long CV, I suggest the R-wordmust be on the horizon. He laughs. ‘‘Why would Iretire? Here I am surrounded by these beautifulchildren. I’m enjoying every minute of it.’’

Hospital of the future

All about imaging: The Valley Private is

standing up for the best in 3D diagnosis.

The Valley Private Hospital inMulgrave is undergoing a$30 million redevelopment and

expanding its specialties to become the

acute ‘full service’ facility of excellencein patient care in the south-east.

Its new intensive care and criticalcare units offer patients peace of mindand the highest level of care.

Its new EOS ultra-low-dose 2-D and3-D imaging system is a breakthroughin skeletal imaging.

The hospital, at the gateway to met-ropolitan Melbourne, is about fiveminutes from the Monash Freeway,Princes Highway and Eastern Freeway.

Patients come from Gippsland,Casey/Pakenham, Mornington Penin-sula, Knox/Rowville and right throughthe Dandenongs.

The Valley is one of only five private

hospitals in Victoria with a 24-houremergency department and thecapacity to handle acute surgery.

‘‘Our hospital has become one of themost technically advanced privatehospitals in the region with a $4 mil-lion state-of-the-art hybrid operatingtheatre [a world first], new 30-bedward, seven new operating theatresand a 10 bed intensive care unit,’’ sur-geon Michael Knight said.

‘‘This technology will allow forbetter patient outcomes throughadvancements in many of the proced-ures performed by our highly skilledsurgeons and clinical team.’’

The only one of its type in Victoria,EOS uses a small dose of radiation, upto 100 times less than a standard CT.

It was created through a partnershipbetween a Nobel Prize-winning physi-cist and a team of biomedical engin-eers, orthopaedic surgeons andradiologists who designed the firsttotal solution for orthopaedic imaging.

EOS can quickly capture full-body

images of patients in a standing posi-tion.

It is non-confining — just like stand-ing in a phone booth.

An entire body scan takes about 20seconds for an adult and 10 secondsfor a child, with the images instantlyavailable.

The high definition images enablesurgeons to better diagnose and planan effective course of treatment. It’spainless and accurate.

In most instances, with a referralfrom a surgeon or GP, EOS can bebulk-billed.

“EOS imaging is the future oforthopaedic X-ray. True weight-bearing alignment of the entireskeleton can be achieved with accuracyand clarity that’s never been availablebefore,’’ Mr Knight said.

‘‘It is technically easier and faster forthe patients at no increased cost.

‘‘EOS should become the standardof care for all hip, knee and spineX-rays.”

Princes Highway, Springvale\21 from city

Proton is Greek for the ‘first time’, and that’s an aptdescription of this superbly renovated block of eightapartments called, you guessed it: Proton.

The two-tone, two-storey block is an impressive addi-tion to the Springvale apartment scene, and capitaliseswell on its central location. ‘‘There’s nothing like it in thearea,’’ said Hocking Stuart’s Ritesh Saigal.

‘‘It’s an inner-city lifestyle verging on the middle ring ofsuburbs. It’s unique in offering lifestyle, an excitingdemographic, and South Yarra/Chapel Street chic. There’sa social flavour here: it’s rejuvenated.’’

The block contains eight apartments: four one-bedroomand four one bedroom-and-study. Sizes range from 45-70square metres and prices from $248,888 to $298,888. Theground-floor apartments have courtyards and the upstairsapartments have views.

Inside, everything is new: the creme and charcoal decoris stunning and bright. Kitchens have granite benchtops, tiled splashbacks and stainless-steel appliances. Thelounge rooms have downlights, quality carpets and secur-ity intercom. Airconditioning and heating are features.Bright bedrooms have sliding mirrored wardrobes withlots of shelf space and en suites have toilets, glass showerrecesses and in-vogue vanities.

The block’s marble foyer has a secure entrance andautomatic lighting, and the driveway has a remote-controlled gate. Each apartment has a car park. Outside, the courtyards are large enough for relaxing in the sun orintimate barbecues.

Inside, it’s surprisingly quiet. This is a solid block in acentral location with Monash University not far away, andthe Springvale shops, large hardware stores, Springvalestation and EastLink nearby.

The agent believes the one-bedroom apartments willrent for $200-$220 per week or $250-$270 for the one-bedroom-plus-study apartments. Two apartments will befurnished for display purposes.

About 200 people are expected to attend the launch ofthe development on Saturday, June 22 that will includeentertainment and a free sausage sizzle.

Kosar Majani is among a group of local and international artists showing the use of veils is not a

’black-and-white’ issue. The artists feature in a Walker Street Gallery exhibition of decorative burqas,

veils and their more ‘street’ equivalent hoodies. The display is open 11am-5pm weekdays and 11am-

3pm Saturdays until June 29 at the corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. The show is

also part of the Nocturnal festival night tours of Dandenong on Wednesday and Thursday.

INBRIEF

Bashing outside schoolDandenong High School went into lockdown as

two elderly men were allegedly bashed and

threatened with a knife outside the school. During

the incident about 10am on May 31, a man was

reportedly aggressive towards several people

before approaching the two men. Police arrested a

27-year-old Dandenong North man at the scene.

He was charged with assault and possessing a

prohibited weapon.

CCTV funds welcomeGreater Dandenong mayor Angela Long has urged

the state government to allocate untapped CCTV

funds to the municipality. While other councils

have baulked at accepting the funds, Cr Long said

Greater Dandenong would ‘‘happily accept funds

for further cameras’’. “We know that CCTV

cameras alone don’t make our suburbs safer, but

we can easily find great homes for more cameras

that will work in well with other initiatives.’’ New

wireless cameras at Dandenong railway station

and in Foster Street, Settlers Square and Halpin

Way will be switched on on June 20. They will

transmit ‘real-time’ vision to Dandenong police.

Helping Hand DayWe Care Services will hold its annual ‘Helping

Hand Day’ on Saturday from 10am-noon. Toys,

bedding, clothes and food parcels will be

distributed to those in need. Anyone wanting

assistance will have to show their health care card

or pension card. Helping Hand Day is run at Faith

Christian Church, 307 Gladstone Road,

Dandenong North.

Free sausagesA food van has started serving free sausages

outside Cornerstone Contact Centre in

Dandenong on Thursday nights. The meals are

provided by Manna4Life, a group of Hallam-based

Coptic Orthodox church members. Cornerstone

co-ordinator Don Cameron said the service meant

there were now free meals every night of the week

in Dandenong. Sausages are sizzled from 7-9pm

on Thursdays in Cornerstone’s car park on the

corner of Walker and Robinson streets.

Your choice of binsResidents will choose the size of their street-

collection garbage bins next year. Greater

Dandenong Council announced the choice of a

240-litre or a new jumbo sized 360-litre recycling

bin, with smaller options for landfill waste and

green organics bins. As reported by the Journal

last week, the bin lids will be colour-coded red,

yellow and green with price incentives to

encourage smaller landfill-waste bins.

Dandenong-based JJ Richards will be the

council’s waste collector for the next eight years.

Dandenong South-based Polytrade will receive

recyclables.

new training academy program.Picture: Anita Jones/Newcastle Herald

ASPIRING south-east Melbourne bas-ketballers will get the chance to honetheir talents at the newly establishedLauren Jackson Basketball Academylater this year.

Four-time Olympian Lauren Jacksonhas joined with training company SmartConnection Training to create a 12-weektraining academy.

The program includes key tactics foron-court success, techniques to improveconditioning, and being guided throughdrills that will improve their overall per-formance and skill set. The academy willbe open to all 15-18 year olds.

Academy lessons also focus on teach-ing players how to plan for their futurecareer and study options, especially thosein the sports industry with those who fin-ish the program receiving a certificate I invocational preparation.

The academy will host an initial phaseof programs at the highly popular basket-ball centres of Dandenong, Kilsyth, Knoxand Nunawading.

The highlight of the academy is a two-day intensive Jackson Jam Super Camp atwhich players will work directly withJackson and other professional men andwomen players during the school holi-days.

Jackson said she was excited about hernew academy.

“I have always wanted to give moreback to the sport of basketball and theyouth of Australia,’’ she said.

‘‘This is an exciting initiative for meand gives me the chance to pass on myexperience and life lessons to help youthreach their goals and dreams.

‘‘I don’t believe there are any limita-tions to what can be achieved personallyand professionally and I stronglybelieve in having fun and enjoying

the journey along the way.”Smart Connection Training managing

director Martin Sheppard said theprogram offered a broad blend of basket-ball and life skills.

“It’s not often students get the chanceto be trained in their own backyard byone of the world’s top athletes,” Shep-pard said.

“This program has everything — lifeskills to help students gain a career in anexciting and fast-paced industry.

‘‘It is also an opportunity to train oneon one with Lauren Jackson and have hershare coaching tips to improve the waythey play basketball.”

The program is expected to expandnationally later this year.

Euro luxury at half the priceEwan Kennedy road tests the Hyundai i30 Premium CRDi

Class act: Many who commented on the shape of the i30 Premium loved its sleek, stylish lines.

Image is everything in the minds of many carbuyers. Motoring journalists have a saying,“People pay big dollars for the front two

inches of their cars”.The Hyundai i30 Premium CRDi we have just

returned after an extended review is a classic casein point. It was positively crammed with luxuryitems of the sort found in big name Euro cars:leather trim; a panoramic glass sunroof; satellitenavigation with Suna traffic control; poweredfront seats with heating; connectivity by way ofAux, USB and iPod/iPhone inputs, as well asBluetooth; hands-free phone; audio streaming;keyless go. The list just goes on and on.

Despite the huge levels of standard equipment, people gasped when we told them the i30 Pre-mium CRDi had a recommended retail of$32,590 – saying it was a lot of money for aKorean car.

Which brings us back to our comments aboutimage being everything – one of the big nameGerman marques in this class would come in atclose to $70,000 if loaded with the same gear. Yet

many would have described the $70,000 pricetag as being a bargain for a Merc, Beemer orAudi.

Power is provided by a 1.6-litre turbo-dieselengine with a high-tech six-speed automatictransmission. We found the transmission nicelyinteractive as it responded quickly to our desirefor a different gear by way of the ‘throttle’ pedal.

At motorway speeds our Hyundai i30 CRDihad fuel consumption in the six to seven litres perhundred kilometres range. This increased to nineto 10 litres per hundred in the hard grind of typ-ical city commuting. The best European turbo-diesel engines in this class can do significantlybetter than this, showing that the Asian car mak-ers still have a distance to go in their designs ofcar diesel engines. Knowing Hyundai, that won’ttake long.

Hyundai i30 Premium is pleasant to drive, albeit with the nose heavy feeling of any front-drive car. The driver can vary the feel of the carby dialling up one of three steering modes withHyundai’s fascinating Flex Steer system.

Blue Bulls: Noble Park’s Luke Smith flies for a mark against Balwyn on Saturday. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Bulls ponder asquandered leadBY ROY WARD

NOBLE Park won’t forget its Queen’s Birthdayweekend loss to Balwyn anytime soon — in fact,it will use the result as motivation for the rest ofits Eastern Football League division 1 campaign.

The Bulls lost to the premiers by eight points infront of a big crowd at Pat Wright Senior Oval onSaturday. The loss came despite the Bulls takingthe lead via a goal from Beau Cosson midwaythrough the final term.

That lead didn’t last long as the Tigers’ werehanded a controversial free kick after an off-ballclash between Bulls defender Trent Robertsonand Tigers forward Luke Barker inside the for-ward 50-metre line just as the Bulls had movedthe ball out to the wing.

Barker went back and slammed his kickthrough the goals to give the Tigers back the lead. The visitors put on two more quick goals andheld off the Bulls for a memorable win, Barkerfinished with six for the match.

The Bulls got a spirited but pointed talk fromcoach Mick Fogarty both on the ground and inthe rooms post-game. Fogarty demanded moreaccountability and better conversions from hisside.

Bulls captain Craig Anderson said his team-mates were disappointed with the result.

“Obviously being in front in the final termmeant we were a fair shot to win it. Then therewere a couple of free kicks, dubious ones, and weended up losing the game.

“That’s the way it goes. Obviously we’re prettyshattered because we feel like we can match itwith them.

“We’ll review the match on Tuesday and moveon pretty quick but we will remember this onefor a while.”

Anderson made a point of saying Robertson’s

free kick was not the sole cause for the loss.Fogarty also urged his players to aim for a higherstandard of performance in the final months ofthe season as the Bulls chase the premiership.

“When you have a high-pressure game liketoday every goal counts, every stoppage counts, every turnover can hurt you,” Fogarty said aftercoming out a long post-game meeting with hiscoaches.

“Today it hurt us late in that last quarter whenwe had momentum.

“We’re really disappointed with the way itunfolded. We had all the momentum and had areal chance to win the game. There was an incid-ent, then we turned the footy over and that wasit.”

The Bulls named George Angelopoulos, TimKelly, Luke Smith, Vergim Faik and Brett Dore asbest players. Cosson kicked three goals.

The Bulls and Tigers will have this weekend offas the rest of the league returns to the field. Intheir next match the Bulls will look to win theirfirst game at East Burwood in half a decade.

“We haven’t beaten them over there in fiveyears and now we have to beat them,” Fogartysaid.

“I’ve got no doubt this group will rise to the

challenge. We’ve been playing good football thelast two weeks and we know we can match itwith anyone.

“Today we didn’t get the four points butshowed we can match it with the top sides.”

The EFL dedicated the round to depression

and anxiety foundation beyondblue. Both sideswore special beyondblue jumpers, which fea-tured blue added to their regular guernseys.

But now the club is also working togrow its girls program, fielding a teamin the Football Federation Victoria13-14C girls competition this seasonand aiming to field more teams in2014.

The Thunder has fielded under-16and under-12 sides in the past but thisis its first girls side in five years.

Thunder girls coach Eva Bukin saidthe club had 17 players aged between10 and 14 in its team and she hoped tolure more girls to the club.

‘‘We started in January with twogirls who had played the game previ-ously.

‘‘We grew the team from word ofmouth through the Dandenongprimary schools and the high schools. The team has done quite well so far.’’

Bukin said her players had mademajor improvements in just six gamesso far this season and had battled harddespite having such a wide range ofages in their side.

‘‘At the start of this season we hadonly 11 players and weren’t doing toowell but as the skills have developedand their passing has improved we’vestarted winning games.’’

Bukin said girls from across south-east Melbourne were welcome to jointhe Thunder.

‘‘We want to draw more girls in andhopefully have a good solid group of13 year olds.

‘‘Rather than having the ages allmixed. We’d like to have two teamsand build our girls program fromthere, because there are not too manygirls’ sides in the Dandenong regionoutside of Noble Park andCranbourne.’’

The Thunder girls train at GeorgeAndrews Reserve, Dandenong, from5pm on Tuesday and Thursday.
