JOHN ON THE MOUNTAIN March 2016 The Clergy and Wardens of St. John on the Mountain, Bernardsville and St. Mark’s, Basking Ridge request the honor of your presence at the Paschal Triduum March 24, 25, and 26 7 PM each evening Families are enthusiastically welcome at each service Maundy Thursday will be celebrated at St. Mark’s in Basking Ridge. As a gathered community, we will enter into theTriduum by celebrating Holy Eucharist together, sharing in the foot washing, and setting Holy Food and Drink aside for Good Friday. We will be using an ancient form of worship from our ancestors. Early Christians celebrated Holy Communion with a meal, not just bread and wine. In the singing of prayers and sharing of food, Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Dinner will be incorporated in this service that follows a model of “Dinner Church” which is an adaptation of early Christians worship and is celebrated weekly by St. Lydia’s Church in Brooklyn, NY. Good Friday will be celebrated at St. John on the Mountain, and we will gather to celebrate Jesus’ triumph over sin and death, and mark the solemn day by hearing again the story of the passion and death of our Savior, and venerating the Lord’s cross. The Great Vigil of Easter will be celebrated at Ross Farms, the site of our shared community garden. A few feet away from where 1,000 pounds of vegetables were grown so they could be given away to those in need, we will celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter together, and renew the promises made in baptism. Feasting will be involved! You will hear more about our High Holy Days as they draw nearer, but please plan on sharing them with us! "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'"When Jesus finished the story, he looked at his friends. “God is just like this gardener. God will not give up on you. God will always help you to grow.”

WHAT:  The  garden  is  a  collaborative  project  of  SJOTM,  St.  Bernard's  and  St.  Mark's  parishes.  The  purpose  is  to  grow  and  distribute  fresh  produce  to  area  residents  in  need.  Last  year  over  1,000  pounds  of  vegetables  were  delivered  to  area  food  pantries.

HOW You Can HelpDONATE:  The  following  supplies  are  needed:  cardboard  egg  cartons,  small  yogurt  containers,  popsicle  sticks,  small  milk  orange  juice  paper  containers,  heavy  cardboard  trays  (from  the  bottom  of  canned  good  cases)

PLANT:  Join  the  Sunday  school  in  Parish  Hall  during  church  on  Sunday,  March  13,  to  start  our  seedlings.

GARDEN:  We  will  be  working  from  April  through  October  in  the  garden,  planting,  weeding,  harvesting  and  delivering  to  area  food  pantries.    We  need  lots  of  volunteers  of  ALL  ages.      Contact  Sally  Hespe  at  [email protected]  or    (908)  875-‐1518  to  sign  up.
