Fitness First MeansSafety First

One of the essentials in maintaining fitness is exercise. Fortunately,

Cagayan de Oro has an accessible and affordable sports facility to engage on those physical routines where one can jog, swim, and play sports like football. Located in the middle of downtown CDO is Pelaez Sports Center where the entrance fee for the swimming pool and the track and field are P100 and P15 respectively. Yes, that cheap.

However, the last time that I jogged at Pelaez was a disappointing experience. The rubber matts are in terrible condition. They were dilapidated that formed holes and humps.

I bumped and almost fell few

times. God forbids but if someone falls and gets injured because of these neglected facilities, who would be held liable? Is it the provincial government of Misamis Oriental that manages the sports complex?

People pay for the use of the sports complex. Where do these daily collections go? One can’t separate safety from health. I just hope that whoever is responsible for the maintenance of Pelaez Sports Complex has seen this as a serious matter that needs to be dealt with the soonest. In the Philippines, people in authority have the tendency to react only after something bad happens.n MICHAEL RAY

AUGUST RUSH

No, I am not referring to the movie of the same title but the frenzy

when August comes rushing in! The City fiesta of Cagayan

de Oro is just a few sleeps away and the energy is already starting to build up this early. The annual parade, beauty pageant, concerts, competitions and gigs are already being hyped up. This means that indeed Cagayan de Oro is on a roll and there’s no stopping the Cagayanons from having a good time!

I am excited to witness particularly this year’s street carnival, a Mardi Gras-like dance festival in the streets of Cagayan de Oro, a first in the history of the city’s celebration. Of course, the Higantes, the giant figures of the prominent personalities of the city will be paraded again this year and hopefully with addition of a few more key people worthy to be given such a tribute.

And the much anticipated Miss Cagayan de Oro? I already have my top five bets in mind but you have to watch the grand coronation night at the Limketkai Atrium and witness first-hand the grandest and finest beauty search on this side of the Philippines.

On the arts and culture side, we also have an upcoming concert of CDO’s own, international concert pianist Rudolf Golez this coming August 9 at the Rodelsa Hall. This one’s interesting since it will feature an all Chopin program. If you’re a classical music buff, don’t miss out on this one!

And if you want to extend the party atmosphere, why not hop to the neighboring province of Bukidnon and celebrate the Kaamulan with them! I heard this one’s the grandest ever so better take on the bus and head on up to cool Bukidnon!

And oh, August also means, midterm exams! Ha ha. That’s either something to look forward to or a date to dread. For students and teachers, it’s the eyebrow squinting moment before going out to celebrate. Either way, it’s a moment they cannot just skip by.

August has just started but with all these numerous activities lined up for everyone, before we know it, the month’s about to end. So, get ready for an exciting August! Have a wonderful and fantastic month ahead!

A bientôt! (see you later!)

HAVE MY SAYKLAUS DORING

BEAT THE BLUES!

The more rainy days - the more people feel low. Not really depressed but a bit lack luster. Especially during Sundays or the first days of a

longer vacation. Living in the Philippines is also much more

different than in my home country Germany. As expatriate, I learned to change my lifestyle here. I don't want to give suggestions or advices "about what to eat and to drink", or, better "what NOT"! Other experts and fellow columnist might to that much better.

However, I experienced myself that some simple things are really working well:

Distract yourself: the last thing you should do is lying in the bed wallowing in self-pity. It's better to distract yourself with a dose of normality.

Watching a movie (possible not a drama or tragedy!) or even cleaning the kitchen on a Sunday can help.

Important is, that you move away from where you feel bad. I mostly love to re-arrange my office at home or do a simple walk around into the nature. It does really miracles.

Forgive someone: when you forgive someone or even yourself, you release anger and resentment that’s bogging you down.

If you remain angry, you're carrying all negative of the day and maybe from the whole world.

Check the news: there is already enough negativism. Natural disasters, war, corruption, incompetent politicians, bullying neighbors, etc.

Switch to realistic thinking: the happy medium between rose-tined positive thinking and beat-

yourself-up-negativity is when you can say, "Okay, I am having a bad day, but it doesn't make me feel a failure", instead of, "I feel awful and/or my life is awful".

The last will only make you feel worse.Develop a positive attitude: I met several

expatriates, who love to complain about everything and everyone.

I try my best to stay away from them. Nowhere on earth is paradise! Examine your thoughts and perceptions, and replace unhelpful thoughts patterns with a more positive approach.

The difference between a happy person and someone who is really depressed isn't, that one has all world's luck. But, they perceive what's happening to them differently.

Do a life audit: some people become stuck in a rut because they don't take time to work out where they are heading.

Try to make decisions to change your life and ask yourself what is getting in your way and what can you do about it.

It is the same principle as going through your cupboards and tossing out the clothes that don't fir you any more.

If there are no uses, they are just cluttering your life. And remember, you might even laugh about it later. Stop crying to "cope" (making sure everything goes smoothly!) and deal with life more simply.

I'll be heading to Manila again after finishing some more articles. I am pretty sure, not everything will go smoothly. But I'll be doing my best to boost my mind and beat the blues!

LIMA, Batangas -- Motorcycle fans in the Philippines can now add two new motorcycles to their wish lists.

Yamaha officially unveiled the XTZ 125 and Serow 250 for the Philippine market at the Yamaha Off-Road Media Day, held last Thursday, July 31, at Lima, Batangas.

The event featured different activities, which were highlighted by the Enduro race, where Spyder provided the goggles for the participants.

Eleven 2-man teams raced to win prizes using the all-new ZTX 125, at the race track of Yamaha assembly plant in Lima, Batangas last Thursday, during the Enduro Friendly Challenge.

The winners of the race are Mel Aquino and Chico Garcia (1st place) of Motorcycle World Magazine; Emmanuel Balmes and Edward Navarro (2nd place) of Motorista Magazine; and Lester Dizon and Edward Dangan (3rd place).

First placers got Go Pro Camera each and a trophy, while the runners up went home with gift certificates and trophies. All racing teams went home with new helmets and goggles courtesy of Spyder.

First showcased at the Yamaha International Show last month, both the XTZ 125 and Serow 250 are dual sports bikes that boast great rides on city roads and on rough terrain.

The XTZ is a lightweight, high performance bike that features smooth drivability and reliability. It is also fuel efficient with an 11-liter fuel capacity. Optimized for going off road, the bike has a long suspension travel and adjustable rear shock. In addition, the bike's front tire (80/90-21) is larger than the rear tire (110/80-18), Yamaha Philippines President Toru Osugi during the press conference held Thursday, at the Yamaha assembly plant in Lima, Batangas.

"The unit assures an easy, safe and

comfortable ride with its compact body, stable full HT steel frame and engine guard," Mr. Osugi said.

The Serow 250, on the other hand, features excellent mmaneuverability suited for mountain trails. "The maximum turning angle of the bike's handlebar is 51 degrees. It has a short wheelbase (1,360 mm) and a tight turning radius," he added.

The bike also features a powerful torque and a fuel-injected engine. The Serow 250 also assures an easy ride with low-seat height of 810 mm. It has a fuel capacity of 9.8 liters.

The XZT 125 is now available with a suggested retail price of P81,900, and interested buyers will get their hands on the Serow 250 real soon, since it will be offered in September with the suggested price of P229,000.

The ZXT 125 is available in white and blue while the Serow 250 comes in beige or white/green. n CHENG ORDONEZ

The Dalai Lama once said, “Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water,

the actions of individuals can have far reaching effects.” Just like him, I am a firm believer that a positive deed by an individual will create a multiplier effect to the entire community.

When JCI Kagayhaan Gold through their Project Chair Engelbert Ubay-ubay invited our team, the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club to participate in their annual mangrove tree planting activity, I did not hesitate to offer our help and gladly said yes right away. I knew that it would be a great opportunity to work together with other organized groups to give back to nature whatever blessings that came our way from the past year.

Although the weather was not looking too kind last July 27, we drove to the rallying point and met with the other groups before proceeding to the planting site in Barangay Baybay, Alubijid, Misamis Oriental. Several groups joined the event that included Cagayan de Oro Rugby Club, Masons CDO Lodge 298, Philippine Air Force-8th Reserve Center, Lotus Sutra Research Group, SAE Fraternity and CDO Eagles Club.

I must admit once we turned off the main highway towards the site, I was a little concerned that our car would get stuck on the muddy path. Some of the houses we drove past on route were badly damaged from previous storms and the muddy track made the drive challenging so we decided to park the car

in a safe place and walked the rest of the road toward the meeting area.

Upon arriving at the site, we were greeted by smiling kids and friendly locals from the small village living along the coast. After the usual introduction of participants, Barangay Chairman Leonardo Suezo demonstrated how to plant a mangrove seedling and reminded us on how all the hard work can be wasted if the seedlings are not properly planted as the current or bad weather can uproot and wash them away easily.

And so we planted with these precautions in mind.

The organizers later informed us that the participants planted 3,000 mangrove seedlings that day, a great display of solidarity and sense of responsibility dedicated to Mother Nature.

OF RIPPLES, MANGROVESANDRUGBYHaving spent 27 years in the UK

where my experience in community outreach usually involve feeding programs to homeless people in London, coming back to the Philippines a couple of years ago gave me more opportunities to initiate and partake in outreach programs which have given me a wider insight and better perspective about life. Establishing the Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club has not only provided kids with an avenue to engage in sports but also helped others who are in need with our own community social responsibility programs, “Help Change the Life of a Child”, “Give Blood, Play Rugby” and “Clean Beach, Play Rugby”. Participating in a tree planting activity complements our community advocacies hence we grabbed the opportunity to

join JCI-KG in their annual mangrove planting activity.

We all have different reasons why we initiate or participate in community outreach activities. For CDO RFC Team, we believe that these causes solidify our sense of brotherhood as we all get to spend some time together knowing that we have collectively shared our efforts to a particular project. We also hope that in doing or supporting these projects, it will inspire the youth and other members of the society to participate more in projects that are worthwhile for the community.

As for myself, I just want to make a positive dent to somebody’s life, to the community and to the people of Cagayan de Oro who have embraced me as one of their own. I am hopeful that this will

inspire other people to become more proactive in giving back and paying forward, believing that in one way or another, that small deed will eventually ripple into bigger things.

We would like to acknowledge our Club Partners and Sponsors such as Healthy Cells Nutrition Club, Tri Star Paints & Construction Supply, Great White Water Tours, Sprint Multisport, Parasat HD, Dahilayan Adventure Park, Primavera Residences, BigyBoi Convenience Store, Smart, Del Monte Phils., Cagayan de Oro Times, Mindanao Daily News, Sun Star Cagayan de Oro, ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao (MOR, TV Patrol and Pamahaw Espesyal) and other blogsites who all have contributed to the grassroots rugby development in CDO. n NOEL VILLA
