hospital pharmacists and working with the faculty

to promote hospital pharmacy practice to

pharmacy students.

This will be my last newsletter submission as

President. It has been a very busy and productive

term. I am very proud of what council has

accomplished and am honored to have worked

with such a dedicated and energetic group. Our

Pharmacy Awareness Month campaign grows

larger each year, our advocacy efforts are

expanding to multiple stakeholder groups, our

educational opportunities continue to grow and

our physical assessment course continues to be in

strong demand and has expanded. It has been a

great pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic

group of individuals on council and on the various

committees who volunteer their time and passion

in making BC Branch one of the most active and

progressive in Canada. I encourage all of you to

consider participating in CSHP Branch activities

and considering joining a committee or even BC

Branch Council. It will be a very rewarding

experience. I look forward to seeing all of you at

our Annual General Meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Happy Autumn Greetings to One and All. Hope

you have all had a great Fall season, and are off to

a fantastic finish to 2016! :)

Bruce Millin (CSHP Official’s Past-Past President),

Tim Lau (CSHP-BC Branch’s President Elect) and I

had the pleasure of attending CSHP Official’s Board

Meetings and AGM in Regina during the 4th

weekend in October. Congratulations to Bruce for

completing his term as CSHP Official’s Past

President and our sincere thanks to him for all his

great work during his term on CSHP’s Executive

team.

During the recent Board Meetings, we discussed a

number of important initiatives, including CSHP

Official’s detailed Balanced Scorecard, to make

sure it’s consistent with the organization’s

strategic goals and objectives. We also discussed

CSHP’s perspective on a National PharmaCare

Program and the importance of releasing a

position statement, in addition to an already

published Open Letter on this topic to Prime

Minister Trudeau and the Premiers. Furthermore,

CSHP’s Past-President, Glen Pearson, participated

in the Citizens’ Reference Panel on PharmaCare in

Canada to highlight the importance of equitable

access to medications for all Canadians and the

significance of ensuring medications are used

appropriately and in a cost-effective fashion.

Another exciting matter that was discussed during the

Board meetings was CSHP’s desire to change its logo in

the near future, together with its new website, to be

unveiled at PPC 2017. As such, a task force was put

together with the tight timelines of considering a new

logo for CSHP by the end of this year. I would like to

encourage our talented BC Branch members to please

email me your proposed CSHP logo creations by

Sunday, Nov. 27th. We will review the suggestions

and submit our favourite logo for consideration to

CSHP Official’s Logo Task Force by the deadline of

December 1st.

A number of recommendations were also reviewed

and approved by CSHP Official during the Board

Meetings. These recommendations will be shared

with the BC Branch Council and can be accessed by

any of our members.

I hope to see you at our upcoming CSHP-BC Branch

AGM on Nov. 18th & 19th, 2016.

With Best Wishes,

Tools for Pharmacist Clinical Practice

Available

In response to requests from pharmacists for access to patient care tools used at the Pharmacists Clinic, the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences has updated its online catalog of pharmacist resources. These resources are free to access and can be helpful for pharmacists practising in any patient care setting (community pharmacy, hospital, clinic, long-term care facility). They include communication tools such as a doctor consultation letter template and service delivery tools such as a Comprehensive Medication Management service model. Templates are formatted so pharmacists can customize them for their own practice needs. Click here to access the full list of resources.

On October 26th we will be having our fall update where Dr. Anthony Amadio, Clinical Practice Leader

for Kelowna General Hospital Pharmacy Department, will be presenting on “Hypertension 2016:

Success remains an elusive target”. As well we are happy to host Doreen Leong, Director of Registration,

Licensure, Pharmanet for the BC College of Pharmacists, who will be presenting on “Certified

Pharmacists Prescriber Initiative - Framework for Pharmacists”. Both talks have strong clinical

implications and we are looking forward to what the speakers have in store!

The Northern Chapter held a new twist on CE

with an accredited two-part series Fall CE Event

over two lunch hours on September 29th and

October 6th, 2016. It was well attended with

26 participants for each session – nearly half

attending via Skype/webinar. This

technology-based approach has been well

received and allows events to be “virtually

attended” by anyone with internet access. The

lunch-hour time was favourable for many; the

only downside was people asked for longer

than one hour as the cases were so

engaging. Attendees felt more confident in

their own clinical skills and recommendations

after attending these presentations.

Julie Gagnon presented on Pediatric

Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Neonatal

Hyperbilirubinemia. We learned who gets

palivizumab, how many doses (3-5), that YES it

does take 20 minutes for the foam to dissipate

after reconstitution and that Canada has an

“extended season” of eligibility to also include

November and March (www.childhealthbc.ca).

Julie also outlined to clearly avoid ceftriaxone

and sulfonamides with elevated neonatal

bilirubin due to displacement of bilirubin from

albumin binding sites (use cefotaxime and

ampicillin/gentamicin instead).

Amy Nunley presented on Acute Coronary

Syndrome and went through useful clinical

pearls and charts for use in practice on

antithrombotics (mono, dual and sometimes

triple), beta-blockers, statins and ACE

inhibitors. Beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors

should be initiated in the first 24 hours in the

absence of contra-indications. Atorvastatin

10mg will decrease LDL by 39% at 4 weeks, but

will see only a further 6% decrease for each

subsequent doubling of dose. And NO NSAIDS

– just ASA!

It is tough to believe it has been over a year since

we nervously hit “submit” on our residency

applications. We’ve now transitioned from being

warned of having a difficult year ahead of us (they

weren’t lying), to being almost halfway through!

The past 5 months have certainly flown by for us

residents!

So far, we’ve all had very unique experiences in

residency, with our schedules differing greatly in

terms of the various clinical experiences we’ve

been exposed to. We’ve had many opportunities

to share these experiences so far, whether it be

through our BBQ dinner and night out during

didactics, our gatherings after academic days and BC-

wide case presentations, or at the CSHP Symposium

that happened this September. Aside from the clinical

knowledge and skills we have all been developing, we

have all been fortunate enough to meet some fantastic

new people.

As the year progresses we have further BC-wide case

presentations coming up, as well as project deadlines,

oral exams, and an increased pace in our rotations. We

know that the second half of our residency is going to

be difficult, but we are looking forward to the valuable

learning ahead of us!

Excellence In Hospital Pharmacy Initiative CSHP’s Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy/En

Pharmacie Hospitalière is a new national initiative

designed to promote, as the title implies,

excellence in hospital and institutional-based

pharmacy practice across Canada. This 3-year

initiative is designed to be the successor of the

highly successful CSHP 2015 initiative, which

concluded last year.

The “Excellence” initiative, as it has become known

by CSHP Official, is led by Project Coordinator

Laurie Mitchell from Montréal. The Steering

Committee is composed of 18 members in total

representing all 10 provinces, including a member

from L’Association des pharmaciens des

établissements de santé du Québec (APES), patient

advocate member, and student member. The

search for a pharmacy technician member remains

ongoing. The newly designed Excellence logo was

recently released.

I am very fortunate to have been selected as the

member representing British Columbia, and look

forward both providing input on behalf of the BC

Branch, as well as champion the initiative amongst

our provincial membership. The infrastructure of the

Excellence initiative, such as the goals and objectives,

is currently under development. It is aimed to build

on the success of CSHP 2015, as well as align with

other key strategies to promote best practice such as

the Key Performance Indicators. The formal

introduction of the Excellence initiative to

membership will take place at PPC 2017 in Toronto.

Health Authority leadership to advocate for the

role of institutional pharmacy teams and their

potential to better serve patients. CSHP Council

members are also planning to meet with Judy

Darcy, the Opposition Spokesperson for Health

in the beginning of November, 2016. Our focus

will be to highlight the roles our members play

in the healthcare system, as well as underline

the contributions we can have to seamless care

via an expanded scope of practice that would

include collaborative prescribing.

The CSHP BC Advocacy Committee is also putting a

lot of effort in continuing to improve our presence

and impact through PAM 2017 and beyond. With

creativity, we are working on expanding the array

of promotional items that we will have to distrib-

ute. Also, in collaboration with the Membership

Chairs and Student delegates, CSHP is launching an

UBC Pharmacy student button design competition.

This design has the potential to be used at a na-

tional level. How exciting is that!

I would also like to take this opportunity to

encourage sites to start thinking about planning

PAM 2017. If you plan to have a public forum, or

engage with local media avenues, this is a great

time to start planning all those details. Also,

remember to check out the Advocacy page for
