What are theatrical properties? Theatrical properties are objects used on stage by

actors to further the plot or story line of a theatricalproduction.

So basically what is it?

“Properties” => Props

Going back to the past a bit…  Small acting troupes formed during the renaissance,

travelled throughout Europe. (also known small ‘companies’)  These "companies," functioning as cooperatives, pooled

resources and divided any income.

Many performers provided their own costumes

But special items—stage weapons, furniture or other hand-held devices— were considered company property; hence theterm "property," which eventually was shortened to "prop."

Do not be confused…

Note that: it is not everything (tools) that appears on thestage can be considered as props.

Props are tools that exist to be used by performers (actorsor actresses).

So how about the tools that appear on stage but are notused by the performers?

They are called Set Decorations.

Both props and set decorations can exist in both small andlarge size.

 You may get confused if:

The same tools are used in a drama as both props and setdecorations.

Reasons? For example let’s take ‘a table’ as one of the tools.

In a play, there are many “ Acts” and “Scenes”.

There will be “scenes” that feature a place like a dining hall where the performers use ‘the table’ to perform the act of eating. This means ‘the table’ exists as props.

Another scene that features the same place may occur later

(or even before) but no one use the table, instead they aredoing something else (‘the table’ is not used at all). At thismoment ‘the table’ exists as set decoration.

Since props also enter the world of business, they arebeing sold as well.
