Director’s NotesTheatre Palisades is delighted to present William Inge’s Pulitzer Prize-winning

drama, Picnic (which also won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award). Thisplay has long been a favorite of Sherman Wayne’s, and he campaigned for years toadd this important and meaningful American classic to one of our seasons. Andso we have. With the wonderful cast that he chose and the set designed and readyto be built, Sherman was off to a great start the week before Thanksgiving. Unfor-tunately, on December 5th Sherman had to have emergency surgery. And althoughhe is recovering well, thanks to excellent medical care, he was unable to continueas the director of Picnic. As producer, I felt his plan and vision for Picnic neededto continue to move forward. Thanks to the help and encouragement from myown family and the wonderful Theatre Palisades family, the rehearsals continued, the set got built, the costume and props were procured and the sound and lightingdesigns are in place. Sherman and I want to especially thank William Pitcher, TonyTorrisi, Drew Fitzsimmons, Zeno and our amazing cast for their help and genuineconcern during Sherman’s hospitalization and recovery.Stepping in as the director, I feel honored to help bring William Inge’s moving

exploration of small town life to our stage. The relationships and the lonelinessthat permeates its character’s lives continue to strike a chord with audiences inthe years since the play’s debut on Broadway in 1953. I had the privilege of playingthe role of Millie Owens in a production of Picnic back in 1968 at Santa MonicaCity College (as it was called then) directed by Marjorie Chandler. The message,as it did in 1953 and now in 2017, still resonates with each generation. Althoughthe dialogue may seem archaic and even politically incorrect at times, Picnic illus-trates how human nature doesn’t really change throughout the decades. All of uscan relate to at least one of these characters up there on the stage, set in a small townin Kansas on a hot Labor Day. I thank you for coming and Sherman does too.
