Notorious Criminals: The Zodiac Killer (Identity: Unknown):

Span of killings: 1960’s-1970’s

Victims: David Arthur Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16: Both Shot and killed on December 20, 1968, on Lake Herman Road, within the city limits of Benicia.

Time of attack: Approximately 11:15 p.m.

Place of attack: A gravel parking area along remote Lake Herman Road on the eastern outskirts of Vallejo, Calif.

Method of Attack: David Faraday was shot in the head at point blank range and died within minutes. Betty Lou Jensen was shot 5 times in the back and killed instantly. The weapon used was a .22 caliber semi- automatic pistol. The ammunition was Winchester Western Super X copper-coated long rifle. There was no indication of robbery of sexual molestation.

Details: According to the police report, the victims were apparently approached while occupying Faraday’s station wagon. Shots were fired into the vehicle in the apparent effort to force them out. Jensen exited the front passenger door first, followed by Faraday. Faraday was shot as he emerged from the car, Jensen was shot in the back as she fled on foot. It was the first date Jensen had ever been allowed on and the crime shocked the community.

While Faraday and Jensen are traditionally considered definite Zodiac victims, there have been many other suspects in this case. In the early 1990s, former Vallejo Police Department detective John Lynch said the couple was killed because Faraday had learned of a major drug deal and had been talking openly about who was involved. Other sources have speculated that Zodiac wasn't responsible because no taunting letters or phone calls were received until months after the murders. However, when Zodiac finally took credit for this attack, he provided many details that were not known to the general public. Perhaps Zodiac's sense of fulfillment following the Faraday-Jensen murders was so strong that he didn't feel the need to immediately brag to the news media. More than 30 years later, local residents still haven't forgotten this crime. And the secluded area of the murders hasn't changed very much at all.

The Zodiac Killer’s Letters and Threats: Most of the Zodiac Killer’s Letters were encoded in a code that was very hard to read. His letters included four cryptograms or ciphers, three of which have yet to be solved.

Although, one citizen claims to have cracked the code with a 340 key code. Corey Starliper is the man. In one of the letters that he decrypted Starliper claims that the Zodiac gave out the actual name of the Zodiac Killer. When police went to the named man: Arthur Leigh Allen, the evidence did not match up. Allen’s writing did not match up to the Zodiac’s and he also passed the polygraph test.

“These facts don't bother Starliper.

“Leigh Allen in that situation was forcing his handwriting to look different from the way that he normally wrote,” said Starliper, referencing the work of detectives.

Allen died in 1992 at age 58.

The discovery of a solution to the code wasn’t “disturbing”, as Starliper said he had heard it described, but invigorating.

“To me, I found it exciting, that I was actually able to get into his head when nobody had for over 40 years,” said Starliper. “It was a high. One of the best highs I had ever experienced was cracking something that nobody else had cracked in over 40 years.””

The last connected killing to the Zodiac Killer was in 1969, coincidently the one I was studying before with the two teenagers murdered outside of town on their very first date. I think we can all agree that the Zodiac Killer is probably dead or very, very old. In other words, he’s out of commission and the people of the California area are safe.

H.H Holmes (Herman Webster Mudgett or Dr. Henry Howard Holmes)

Span of Killings: 1888(?)-1894

Victims: 9–200 (9 confirmed, 27 confessed, up to 200 estimated)

How He Did It:

Holmes is known for his “Murder Castle” “Viewed from the outside, the murder castle was simply a big ungainly building, one of the architectural monstrosities common in the nineties. But its interior, honeycombed with trap doors and secret passageways and walled-up rooms, was the fulfillment of every small boy’s dream of a haunted house.

If ever a house was haunted, that one on Chicago’s South Side should have been. To this day, fifty years later, nobody knows precisely how many persons were murdered in it. Estimates range from twenty to a couple of hundred. Most, if not all, were women. It is believed that they were chloroformed, gassed, strangled, or perhaps beaten to death. Their bodies were destroyed in cellar pits containing quicklime and acids. Some of their skeletons were sold by their efficient murderer, who was determined to realize every penny of profit from his crimes.”

Holmes tended to go after young women. They would get drawn into his house and he would kill them there.

Some facts about Him:

-He was badly bullied by his classmates

-He worked at a drugstore he eventually bought out

-1891-1892 he built his Murder Castle containing:

•51 doorways that opened to brick walls

•100 windowless rooms

•Stairways leading to nowhere, with dead ends

•2 furnaces

•Oddly angled walls

•Body shoots to the incinerator

-He killed his victims in grotesque ways

Page 8: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

Amongst other methods, he asphyxiated them in soundproofed bedrooms fixed with gas lines, while locking others in a huge bank vault. Eventually, all of them met the same fate, being stripped of flesh and being made into skeleton models for medical schools.

-One man led to his gradual downfall

Holmes convinced Benjamin Pitezel, to fake his own death for a $10,000 life insurance policy. The agreement was that Holmes would find a corpse to act like his dead body, but the killer didn't do that and killed Pitezel instead. A month long chase ensues as Pitezel's wife searched for her husband and her kidnapped children. On November 14, Holmes is arrested in Boston.

More on Holmes.

Infamous con artist and serial killer H.H. Holmes was born Herman Webster Mudgett on May 16, 1861, in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. Nicknamed the "Beast of Chicago," H.H. Holmes murdered many of the city's inhabitants in his specially constructed home, which was later nicknamed the "Murder Castle." He has also been linked to deaths in other parts of the United States and Canada.

Early LifeBorn to an affluent family, Holmes had a privileged childhood. It has been said that he appeared to be unusually intelligent at an early age. Still there were haunting signs of what was to come. He had an interest in medicine, which supposedly led him to practice surgery on animals. Some accounts show that he may even have been responsible for the death of a friend.

He was the son of Levi Horton Mudgett and Theodate Page Price. The family was descended from among the first settlers to the area. He grew up with a father who was a strict, and Holmes was often bullied as a child. He claimed that, as a child, he had been forced by other students to view and touch a human skeleton after they found out about his fear of the local doctor's office. The bullies had initially brought him there to scare him, but instead he was utterly fascinated.

Herman Mudgett graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1884. After graduating, he moved to Chicago to practice pharmacy. He also began to engage in a number of shady businesses, real estate, and promotional deals under the name "H. H. Holmes".

On July 8, 1878, Holmes married Clara A. Lovering of Alton, New Hampshire. On January 28, 1887, he married Myrta Z. Belknap in Minneapolis, Minnesota; he was still married to Lovering at the time, making him a bigamist. He and Belknap had a daughter named Lucy Theodate Holmes, born 4 July 1889 in Englewood, Illinois.

The family of three resided in the upscale Chicago suburb of Wilmette—although Holmes spent most of his time in the city tending to business. He filed a petition for divorce from his first wife after marrying his second, but the divorce was never finalized. He married his third wife, Georgiana Yoke, on January 9, 1894. He also had a relationship with Julia Smythe, the wife of Ned Connor, a one-time employee of his who later fled Chicago. Julia became one of Holmes' victims.

Edward Theodor Gein (The Mad Butcher) Span of killings: unknown

Victims: 2+ Mary Hogan, 54 (tavern owner) / Bernice C. Worden, 58 (hardware store owner)

(After confessions) How he did it: Bernice C. Worden was also shot in the head with a .22 caliber rifle, then dragged out onto a sled and then taken back to Gein’s place. Her body was left hung up in the shed. When the police arrived and searched the house they found a very disturbing scene. Organs in the fridge, a heart sat on the fridge as if it were about to be cooked and eaten, and many body parts made into accessories.

Mary Hogan is a 51-year-old divorcee and the owner of a local tavern in Pine Grove, six miles from his home. On the afternoon of December 8, 1954, he shot her in the head with his 32-caliber revolver. He put her body in his pickup truck and took her back to his shed. A customer who dropped into the tavern found the store deserted, and a large bloodstain on the floor. A spent .32 cartridge lay near it. Bloodstains ran out the back door and into the parking lot, where they halted beside tire tracks that looked like those of a pickup truck. It looked as if Mary Hogan had been shot and taken away. Police were not able to learn anything about what happened to her. A few weeks later, a sawmill owner named Elmo Ueeck talked to Gein about it. Gein replied, "She isn’t missing, she’s at the farm right now." Ueeck did not ask any further questions on the topic. Police found her body at the same time they found Bernice C. Worden’s body in Ed Gein’s home. Ed Gein was apprehended immediately.

Why? It is said, that besides the fact that Ed Gein is mentally ill he murdered and did these horrific things as a tribute to his mother. Some of it may have been just the satisfaction as well. From the background of his isolation as a child we see that Gein was also raised to be a little bit different. His mother separated him from human contact with kids his age and the only people he could really be with were his alcoholic father, who died pretty early in Gein’s life, his brother Henry who also died young, and his mother who died after heart failure from multiple strokes. This may have been a snapping point for him. After Gein’s family was gone he remained isolated and you know the rest of the story.

The Consequences: Robert H. Gollmar, the judge in the Gein case, wrote: "Due to prohibitive costs, Gein was tried for only one murder—that of Mrs. Worden.". Ed Gein was sent to Central State Hospital For the Criminally Insane which was a good facility at the time and had just over 1,300 patients. Ed Gein remained there till he died, after living about 20 years in that hospital, due to respiratory and heart failure due to cancer (age 77).

Notorious Crimes:

Boston Bombing: Time: April 15, 2013

Victims (5):

-4 civilians

-1 police officer injured in an explosion on April 19, 13’ died April 10, 14’

-Tamerlan Tsarnaev (bomber)

Non-fatal injuries:

-264 civilians (estimate)

The Terrorists:Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (sentenced to death)

Convicted of planting the bombs at the Boston Bombing. At the time, he was a university student at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

It is said, that he also planned with his brother to bomb Times Square in New York. He was convicted on April 8, 2015, and was sentenced to death on May 15, 2015.

Page 14: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

He currently resides in ADX Florence Federal Supermax prison in Colorado.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was described by classmates as a popular student, became a naturalized U.S. citizen on September 11, 2012. His older brother, a community college dropout who was frequently unemployed, had a green card but was not an American citizen.

Investigators have suggested the Tsarnaevs were motivated by extremist Islamic beliefs but planned and carried out the bombings on their own and were not connected to any terrorist groups. The brothers allegedly used the Internet to learn how to build explosives.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev (deceased)

Shortly after the bombing, the Tsarnaev brothers killed a policeman, carjacked an SUV, and engaged in a shootout with the police. During the shootout Tamerlan Tsarnaev died, partly as a result of his brother driving over him, and an MBTA police officer was critically injured in the course of Dzhokhar's escape in the SUV.

Dzhokhar reportedly also said that he and his brother were radicalized, at least in part, by watching Anwar al-Awlaki lectures. ABC reported on April 23, 2013, that authorities linked Tsarnaev to an

unsolved triple homicide in nearby Waltham.

About the VideoIn this video, it is very interesting to see how the bombers interacted after. The fact that they went out grocery shopping (maybe to cover their tracks) after was almost ridiculous.

Page 15: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

I also thought it was awesome to see and learn about the C.A.R.T Lab in Boston.

The Computer Analysis and “Response Team provides assistance to FBI field offices in the search and seizure of computer evidence as well as forensic examinations and technical support for FBI investigations. This Unit includes a state-of-the-art

forensic laboratory comprised of computer specialists and a network of trained and equipped forensic examiners assigned to more than 50 field offices.” I thought this was really cool, and also the only piece of evidence the police had to off of. I couldn’t ever imagine going through that one tape so many times. I would’ve assumed that the clip was even longer than they showed in the video as well. It would’ve taken so very long to do that.

That forensic lab would’ve been super important in the investigation as well, because it was the only clip they had to identify the single bomber (not even both of them).

Part 2 of the First VideoThis video went more into what happened at the C.A.R.T lab. It was awesome because they were able to trace back the video footage all the way back to where the cameras first picked up “white hat” and “black hat” together.

We see later that they also tried to do the facial recognition that we see sometimes in a FBI/ CSI shows where facial recognition takes literal seconds to do. In real life, as shown it’s not that easy and in 2012 it evidently wasn’t that fast or accurate so it did not work.

The C.A.R.T lab does way more than examine video evidence. It provides online investigations and it provides helpful online research as well as many more algorithms.

As we see, in this photo both bombers were first spotted together right outside “whiskeys” with two back packs. It is now so much more evident to me how important crime scene evidence can be.

This was really amazing when I went to Boston. I got to stand on the Finish line of the Boston marathon and stand outside some of the shops that were blown up and where people actually died. I was pretty emotional remembering that dark time in Boston. It was weird walking over the Finish line like it was just a cross walk even though it was actually a place of great pain and turmoil at one point.

John F. Kennedy Assassination: John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States of America.

Assassinated at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (18:30 UTC) on Friday, November 22, 1963

Perpetrator: Lee Harvey Oswald (died from abdominal wound- shot by Jack Leon Ruby)

****Jack Leon Ruby was later sentenced to death and ended up dying of pulmonary embolism, secondary to lung cancer****

About Lee OswaldLee Harvey Oswald was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1939

Page 17: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

When Oswald was being transported to the county jail he was shot by Dallas NightClub owner Jack Leon Ruby on live TV.

In Oswald’s early life he was a marine and sent into the army underage at only 17 years old. At the time he was 5.8 only weighing 138 pounds. Oswald’s primary training was in radar operation and another position requiring high clearance. Oswald was said to be very intelligent for his age. But with those gifts also came flaws. Oswald was said to be very prideful and had some temper. He was mostly independent and liked to teach himself things. After awhile Oswald got the nickname Ozzie Rabbit after the famous TV character that is in fact described as prideful and independent. This character was also attributed to Oswald’s appearance in being smaller and less built than the other troops.

Before the war Oswald had his mother. It is reported that he had a pretty bad relationship with his mother. In one instance they were fighting and at only age 12 Oswald hit his mother and threatened her with a weapon. He was later taken away from his mother to finish his schooling. People who knew Oswald as a child described him as “withdrawn and temperamental”. It seems that he didn’t change much through the years.

Oswald, as described before, was killed after being shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to the same hospital President Kennedy was sent and treated at, but also died there (Oswald even had the same doctors treating him as the President did). He was announced dead at 1:07 p.m.

The apparent motive for Ruby’s crime was that he was “distraught” over President Kennedy’s death. He said that he was "saving Mrs. Kennedy the discomfiture of coming back to trial."

In the moment, Ruby’s actions may have seemed logical, but I’m sure afterwards he might have regretted them more deeply after he was sentenced to death.

President Kennedy’s Autopsy: (Warning the pictures on the next page are very graphic)

Page 18: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

In regards to the assassination, President Kennedy was shot first in the back, right in the upper regions of the scapula. According to the trajectory of the bullet it ended up exiting through the anterior surface of the neck. That was the first shot. When this happened Mrs. Kennedy screamed and tried to help her husband by raising his head a little.

Soon after the first shot another came; hitting President Kennedy in the posterior of the skull slightly above the external occipital protuberance. Then making it’s exit on the exterior to the skull. Fragments of the skull came off and some stayed on because of skin flaps, keeping them on.

There is lots of controversy on whether the bullets came from the front or the back. But it is clear with my knowledge on how bullet wounds take shape, that the bullets came posterior to the body. The circular wound on the back clearly tells us that the bullet would have had to enter through the back at a fairly straight angle and at a great amount of force to cut through so cleanly.

Some of the diagrams on the next page clearly depict what happened to President Kennedy’s skull when he was shot. If you look at the autopsy photos closely you can also infer for yourself that there is no way that they could have come from the front

because of the little damage to the back of the skull.

Here are the photos:

Lindbergh Kidnapping: The Lindbergh Kidnapping first started

when 20- month old toddler Charles Lindbergh was put down to sleep at 8:00p.m. on March 1, 1932, by the nurse of the family, Betty Gow. Around 9:30p.m. the babies father, heard a sound that made him

Page 20: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

think something in the kitchen had broken and fallen. However, at 10:00pm, Gow returned to the baby’s bedroom to discover that he was not in his crib. The nurse asked Anne Lindbergh (the mother), if the baby was with her. But the baby was not. The nurse went to tell Mr. Lindbergh and then he himself went to the baby’s room to find his child not there. He searched the room and found a white envelope on the window sill.

Lindbergh then grabbed his gun and went around the house looking for an intruder. Soon the police were at the house, along with reporters, and the family’s lawyer.

The police found later a tire track and pieces of a “intelligently designed, but crudely constructed” ladder. The letter was opened by the police and was written in messy writing with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

The letter asked for ransom money for the child.

John Condon was a retired school teacher who was mentioned in the note. The kidnappers said that he would be the “intermediary” for the kidnappers to get their money. Condon received a letter about this and obeyed the instruction to put an ad in the local newspaper saying “Money is Ready. Jafsie” which alerted the culprits.

Later, Condon met with the representative of the group that claimed to be the kidnappers. He met with the man late one evening at Woodlawn Cemetery. According to Condon, the man sounded foreign, but stayed in the shadows during the conversation. Condon was told that the baby was still alive and that they were ready to receive their payment now.

The ransom payment was packaged in a wooden box that was custom-made in the hope that it could be later identified. The money itself was made up of gold certificates that were going to be taken from circulation later. The plan was that if large amounts of gold certificates were spent at the same time it could lead them to the culprits.

The package was sent.

MAY 12, 1932:

A truck driver named William Allen pulls off to the side of the road about 7.2 km south of the Lindbergh home. He went to a grove of trees to relieve himself, and there he found the body of a decomposing toddler. Allen told

Page 21: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

the police where they took the body to the morgue. The body was badly decomposed, and found the skull was badly fractured. They also found that the body had been eaten and attacked by multiple animals and evidence of an attempt to bury the body.

The baby was identified as the missing Lindbergh child based on the overlapping toes of the right foot and the shirt that Gow had made for the baby.

The experts concluded that the child was killed from a blow to the head. The father was insistent on having the body cremated afterward.

In June 1932, the FBI officials began to suspect that the kidnapping was an “inside job” perpetrated by someone the Lindberghs trusted. They thought that it might’ve been Violet Sharp, a British household servant at the Morrow home. She had orgininally given contradictory testimony regarding her whereabouts on the night of the kidnapping. It was reported that she seemed nervous when questions. She committed suicide on June 10, 1932, by ingesting a silver polish that contained potassium cyanide just prior to what have been her fourth questioning.

The gold certificate bills were tracked to Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a German immigrant with a criminal record. When they searched his home they found 14,00$ in of the ransom money.

“Hauptmann was arrested by Finn; he was interrogated, as well as beaten at least once, throughout the day and night that followed. The money, Hauptmann stated, along with other

items, had been left with him by friend and former business partner Isidor Fisch. Fisch had died on March 29, 1934, shortly after returning to Germany. Only following Fisch's death, Hauptmann stated, did he learn that the shoe box left with him contained a considerable sum of money. He took the money because he claimed that it was owed to him from a business deal that he and Fisch had made. Hauptmann consistently denied any connection to the crime or knowledge that the money in his house was from the ransom.

In the search of his apartment by police, a considerable amount of additional evidence that he was involved in the crime surfaced. One item was a notebook that contained a sketch for the construction of a ladder similar to that which was found at the Lindbergh home in March 1932. John Condon's telephone number, along with his address, were discovered written down on a closet wall in the house. A key piece of evidence, a piece of wood, was discovered in the attic of the home. After being examined by an expert, it was determined to be an exact match to the wood used in the construction of the ladder found at the scene of the crime.”

Page 22: The Zodiac Killer - Web view"I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST ... He put her body in his

During the trial, the prosecution led with Hauptmann’s over 14,000$ of the ransom money. They also called in 8 hand writing experts. There were many similarities between the writing of Hauptmann and what was on the ransom letter. Forensic work also showed that the wood that Hauptmann had in his possession was the exact same wood that was used in the making of the ladder. Hauptmann also had no explanation as to why he had Condon’s phone number and address.

The defense did not challenge the identification of the body, which usually happens during murder cases, because of the condition of the body and intense analysis of it.

Hauptmann was ultimately convicted of the crimes and sentenced to death. His wife, Anna Hauptmann sued the state of New Jersey for the unjust execution of her husband, but both times the suits were dismissed on unknown grounds.

Forensics Psychiatrist You must then pick one forensic career to investigate further.  Include the following information in you career portion of your portfolio:

Create a list of requirements for the job/profession you have chosen solid clinical psychology training and experience

firm grounding in scientific theory and empirical research (understanding of

scientific validity, research design, statistics, and testing)

critical thinking skills

thorough knowledge of social and cultural issues

legal knowledge (including mental health law, case law, and courtroom

procedures)

excellent writing skills

strong oral presentation skills

ability to maintain one's composure under stress

To become a psychiatrist, you will need to meet the same basic requirements as other medical doctors.

The first step is to complete at least 2 to 3 years of a bachelor’s degree, including several required science courses. This is the minimum requirement for entry into medical school. However, because the admission process is very competitive, most applicants have a 4-year bachelor’s degree, and some even have a master’s degree. Students in Quebec can apply to medical school after completing a CEGEP program.

Medical school admittance is based only partially on your grades. Other factors taken into account include extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, and character. In addition, it is usually necessary to write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) before applying. It is not uncommon for people to apply 2 years in a row before being accepted.

Medical school takes 3 to 4 years to complete, and you will graduate as a medical doctor (MD). To become a psychiatrist, you must then complete 5 years of residency training. Residencies are periods of practical, on-the-job training, which take place in hospitals or other medical settings. If you want to sub-specialize in a particular field, such as forensic psychiatry, you will need another 1 to 2 years of training.

Compare a television character that represents a forensic career you have chosen to explore
