Zion of Amor Church –
Your support means a lot to me!
Thank you for providing me an
opportunity to serve in an unknown
(to me) part of the body of Christ.
It’s cool how God works. Your
words of encouragement give me
hope and contentment, your prayers
guide me on the Lord’s path and
your gifts are a blessing with left-
overs! I’m really thankful for
growing up in our Church and look
forward to being sent out to share
the good news we celebrate.
God Bless, Marty Charest.
P.S. I have a blog to share what’s
going on. I look forward to hearing
about the year at home also!

PASTOR PARAGRAPHS
Dear Members & Friends,
Our Stewardship Committee is just wrapping up
our “Walking with Jesus” stewardship program. I want to
extend my thanks to our Stewardship Committee ( Rose
Hovland, Bob Roberts, Joyce Sanderson, Amy Drake) for
their hard work and enthusiasm for this very important
project. I also want to thank those who have spoken in
worship giving ‘Temple Talks’ on what stewardship means
to them: Norma Petschl, Duane Hovland, & Le Boyer.
If you have not filled out an ‘estimate of giving’
card yet, we would really appreciate hearing from you. It
is very helpful during our congregational budget process
to have an accurate idea of what we can expect in
offerings this coming year. All the information is kept in
strict confidence in the church office.
Confirmation Sunday for our 10th grade students
is set for October 25th. They will have completed their
work and will be ready to affirm their baptism during
worship that day. We have a special day planned and it is
a very important day in the lives of these young people, so
please keep them in your prayers and support them
during this time. Pictures for confirmands are at
9:15 a.m. on the 25th. Steve Janssen Photography will be
here to take both individual and group pictures.
My thanks to their mentors who have seen them
through their memorization work. This is a big help to me
and it creates a relationship between the student and the
adult that can help them continue in their faith. So
thanks, mentors, and remember that you are invited to
participate in the confirmation service with the laying on
of hands.
Our confirmands are: Dustin Olson, Ramon Lopez-
Moen, Maya Gonzalez, Reed Leuthner, Danielle Roberts,
Desiree Roberts, Sara Swartz.
Our Stephen Ministry group continues to be a
blessing to Zion’s ministry. I am so grateful for their
Christian caregiving with their care receivers. We are very
fortunate to have these folks in our midst. Please
remember to thank them for their service. They are very
well-trained and put in a lot of time that is really in the
background in the congregation…but I know it and am so
grateful! Thank you, Marc Wing & Susan Thompson
(leaders), Doris Wilcox, Ray Long, Bobbi Tamke, Jane
Zeaske, Marilyn Wahlgren, Carol Gealow, Nancy Osland,
and all those who have now ‘retired’ from active Stephen
Ministry.
We are always looking for new Stephen Ministers,
so if this is an interest of yours, or if you are curious as to
what Stephen Ministry encompasses, please contact me
or one of our Stephen Ministers. And pray about it. A new
training class is beginning Oct 5th, so if you have been
thinking about it, this is a great time to get started.
Our Sunday School is underway now, but we still
need someone to help with the First and Second grade
classroom. There are too many students for just one
teacher (which is a great problem to have!). We also need
someone to teach every-other Sunday in the 5th and 6th
grade class. Remember, you are never too old to teach
Sunday School, and at every baptism we promise to help
these young people grow in their Christian faith. So
please consider helping out. In the past we have had
several men teach Sunday school and the kids really
respect having a male role model in the faith teaching
them. We are fortunate… some area churches don’t even
have a Sunday school anymore because they don’t have
any kids! We need to embrace our youth and help them
in every way to grow into stronger faith in Christ Jesus.
We don’t want to be in the position of wishing we had
children in church. I hope to hear from some folks soon.
Our Mutual Ministry Team (MMT) is busy with the
feedback process for me. If you have been asked to
provide feedback, I thank you for your honest feedback
and look forward to going through the information that is
gathered with the MMT. Thanks also to Karalyn
Harrington, Inga Nelson, Peggy Bladow, Rick Pulford, and
Ray Long for all the work they do with the MMT. They are
great!
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Jim
P.S. Intern Jon and I will be holding a First
Communion class for youth in grade 4 and up in January.

Take time to think - it is the source of power.
Take time to play - it is the secret of youth.
Take time to read - it is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to laugh - it is the music of our soul.
Take time to be friendly - it is the road to happiness.
Take time to dream - it is the highway to the stars.

Dear Zion Lutheran Church,
Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with
the kids of your congregation! We enjoyed our time in
Battle Lake/Amor and loved teaching the kids all about
God’s Everlasting Love! Thanks too for the delicious
cooking and gift cards and hospitality. Your
welcoming homes and families made the week a blast
and even more relaxing than most. God Bless you with
love and joy!

INTERN’S OFFERING
¡Hola! I’m your new intern pastor, Jon Rundquist. I live
with my wife of four years, Tiffany and our three-year-
old son, Samuel in the beautiful house that Zion has
provided us for the next year. Keith has graciously
surrendered the intern chair over to me for the next
year, and I look forward to growing with and alongside
this beautiful congregation. I look out my window of
this little office, and I can’t help but wonder what this
year will bring. But before I rattle off dreams for the
future, perhaps some of you may be wondering who
this new intern really is…
I was born in Saint Cloud, Minnesota in 1989,
few months before the Berlin Wall fell. Yep. My
mother became the Youth Director at First Lutheran in
Morris in 1995, so my family of two brothers (one
pastor, one student) and my parents packed us up and
we moved to the windy prairie of west central
Minnesota. We lived in a tiny house on the edge of
Donnelly with a farm field in the view of our front yard.
My dad did odd jobs, including driving tractor for a
local farmer (red ones…) for much of my life in
Donnelly.
I was active in our church’s youth group (being
the Youth Director’s kid, I kinda had to); spent a week
every summer at Luther Crest Bible Camp; ran walked
in Cross Country for one year; active in Speech and
Knowledge Bowl for much of high school; and played
many video games growing up. (I still play video
games, but now I consider it my spiritual practice as
much as meditating can be for some people.)
My parents divorced when I was in 10th
grade,
and I moved with my mother and little brother
(currently a student at UMM) to Huntington Beach,
California the following year. I missed the snow and
quiet of the prairie, so I moved back to Minnesota after
10 months. I spent my senior year back at Morris, and
graduated in 2007, 30 years after my mother graduated
from the same high school.
I spent a few years after high school living in
Alexandria (so I know lake country) and Moorhead
before I started at Minnesota State University
Moorhead in the fall of 2010. Before I started college at
MSUM, I did spend a year working at the Flying J in
Fargo at the now-defunct restaurant. I met Tiffany at
Lutheran Campus Ministry at MSUM, and so LCM has
always held a special place in my heart.
It was because of my activity in my youth group
growing up, and Lutheran Campus Ministry that I was
propelled into the direction of seminary and ordained
public ministry, and thus spent most of my college
career focusing on the goal of pursuing this call.
Tiffany and I were married at Lake Bemidji State Park
the day after she graduated with a Bachelor of Social
Work in 2011. We promptly moved to Saint Cloud so I
could finish my bachelor’s degree and attain my
lifelong dream of attending Saint Cloud State
University (you can see my pennant hanging up in my
office). I worked at Lutheran Campus Ministry as a
Peer Minister and La Cruz Community Center as a tutor
for elementary-high school students who were mostly
of Eastern African descent.
Samuel was born in the spring of 2012, and I
was mostly a stay-at-home dad and full-time student for
much of Sam’s life. I graduated from SCSU with a
Bachelor of Elective Studies (which means that I took
what I could, when I could, and what I wanted) in
August of 2013, but started my Master of Divinity at
Luther Seminary in July of 2013.
We moved to campus when I started Summer
Greek, and Tiffany worked as Case Manager for
Pinnacle Services managing care plans for folks on
Medicare in Hennepin County. Maple Grove Lutheran
was our church home for a year while I served as their
Youth Ministry Intern, but I left after a year to focus
more on supply preaching in rural Minnesota.
So, I spent the last year preaching in about four
different congregations across central Minnesota about
once a month, or more. I love the rural church. I feel
blessed that God called me to this place, and I look
forward to spending this year getting my hands dirty
alongside you. I guess I’ll save my dreaming for next
month because my page limit is up. Thank you all for
the beautiful welcome you’ve shown me and my
family.
Grace abounds,
Jon

October Author Presentation
The Island by Nancy Lee
October 1 @ 1:30 p.m.
“In one day it was over. The town was demolished; the
tall pine forests crumbled into ash, families were left
with nothing to call their own. Just being alive was gift
enough for those who survived. Saturday, Oct 12, 1918
dawned, and their world would never be the same.”
This is an excerpt from The Island.
Nancy Lee may be best known as the wife of a pastor
and bishop. The Island, her first book, is popular
among those who have read it. It is available in the
church library and Lundeen’s. Invite your friends and
neighbors to the presentation.
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
is the title of the November 5th
book discussion.
“Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the
Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s
Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but
now the new owner has made an incredible discovery.
The artifacts from Japanese families, sent to internment
camps during World War II, are uncovered during the
renovation. Henry Lee embarks on a quest that leads to
memories of growing up Chinese in a city rife with anti-
Japanese sentiment.” This is an excerpt from Ford’s
book. The book is available in the church library.

MUSICALLY SPEAKING:
The Power of an Anthem
Usually when someone mentions the
word “anthem,” we think of the words and melody
that represent a particular country. National anthems,
often rousing and strongly emotional, are meant to
exemplify one’s allegiance to his or her homeland.
Currently, both American spectators and competitors
sing our national anthem before most sporting events,
from high school basketball games to pre-race
NASCAR ceremonies and the annual Westminster Dog
Show. During each Olympic event’s award ceremony,
gold-medal winners are honored by the raising of their
flag and playing of their country’s anthem. Most of us
have noted how powerful and passionate these
moments can be.
However, anthems are not solely associated
with patriotism; they were originally a form of liturgical
music. At Zion, the anthem is a short, sacred selection
usually done between the first and second lessons by
the choir, the Praise Team, an ensemble, or a soloist.
The anthem is chosen with due care, and when possible,
its lyrics parallel the church year, lectionary, or
message of the day. Moreover, services such as
Reformation Sunday, All Saints Day, Christ the King
Sunday, Ash Wednesday, and others include an anthem
that supports each service’s particular purpose.
Sometimes, circumstances make an anthem
more relevant than first intended. For example, when
former director Mabeth Gyllstrom scheduled and
prepared the choir to sing the poignant “Cantique de
Jean Racine” by Gabriel Faure for our first time, no one
could know it would fall on the Sunday following 9-11.
Those of us involved with the anthem that Sunday will
never forget its relevance and impact. I encourage all
congregants to listen carefully to the anthem because
even though the lyrics may seem universal, the
composer chose the words expressly to communicate.
To add your voice, consider joining the choir
and rehearsing with us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. We
can never have too many singers!

COUNCIL CORNER
Name: Neal Johnson
Years on Council: 3
Church Member: 4 years
Committee Liaison: Outreach/New Member and Intern
Phone: 218 495-2353
E-Mail: [email protected]
Background: Born and raised in Dalton, Minnesota.
Graduated from High School in Fergus Falls, MN.
Entered the Army for 2 years, serving 18 months with the
3rd Armored Division in Germany as a tank mechanic.
Upon discharge I enrolled at the North Dakota State
School of science, earning an Associate degree in Liberal
Arts. Attended Bemidji State College earning a Bachelor
of Science degree in Biology. I taught 3 years at Fertile,
Minnesota. I accepted a teaching position at the North
Dakota State School of Science teaching Biology and
other Biology related subjects. While there I earned an
MA degree in biology from Colorado State College in
Greeley, Colorado. I retired in 1999 after 37 years of
teaching. Joyce and I have been married 54 years. We
have 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren. We moved from
Wahpeton to our home on Deer Lake 5 years ago.
When I was first asked to serve on the church council, I
hesitated momentarily, but then said yes. I felt that it was
a good opportunity to meet people at Zion and learn more
how the church really functions. I was correct in both
cases. Serving on the council and other committees has
been an informative and rewarding experience. You
realize immediately what a great staff we have and what
great people we have at Zion. If you are asked to serve on
the council or on a committee, do so willingly. You will
be glad you did. We know that everyone has unique
talents that will serve the Zion community.
----------------------------------------------------------------
COMMON MEETING TIME
As Zion works to ‘move committees forward’, the
decision was made to try a common meeting time for all
committees. The first common meeting time will be
Monday, November 2nd
at 7:00 p.m. This has been quite
successful in many churches. It allows committees to
interact more and respects busy schedules.
The meeting will start with devotion and announcements
for all committees. Then committees can break up into
their own meeting. If you are a member of more than one
committee, feel free to attend more than one meeting by
joining a meeting in progress.
RALLY SUNDAY: The AMOR ROCKS! Sunday
School and Youth gathered on Sunday, September 20th for
the first time formally this session. Many students also
received their first story or study bibles from Zion during
the church service. Thank you to Lori Charest for
inscribing them with your beautiful calligraphy and to
Angela Hartman for your generosity in making and
furnishing their corresponding bible bags. So many
servants, such blessed Zion children. We are glad for our
outstanding faculty and helpers who gift their
encouragement, love, and who teach the kids of all ages.
JO & DOUGH: Each Sunday that AMOR ROCKS!
meets, Jo & Dough for parents and grandparents meets.
Here, you can enjoy a morning treat and a leisurely cup of
coffee or other delight. Find camaraderie, friendship,
laughs, comforts, visiting, and relaxation with whoever
can attend. There are no requirements of any
kind, so stop in every time Sunday school
meets or just anytime that works for you. Let's
keep our big group of Jo & Doughers growing.

---------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT IS A STEPHEN MINISTER? Stephen Ministers are lay people—Christian men and
women—trained to provide one-to-one Christ-centered
care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as
grief, divorce, loneliness, job loss, chronic or terminal
illness, disability, relocation, separation due to military
deployment or other life struggles. They are people with a
compassionate heart who’ve been equipped with the skills
to listen, encourage, and offer support when someone is in
need. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver
at a time and meets with that person once a week.
How does Stephen Ministry benefit the pastor?
Stephen Ministry deepens, expands, and extends the
caregiving capacity of the congregation. A
team of Stephen Ministers, together with a
pastor, can provide ongoing care to more
people than the pastor could alone. This
also frees the pastor to invest more time
in other important ministry areas.
Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life
and have a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to
people during a time of need. Zion currently has 8
Stephen Ministers: Carol Gealow, Dick Gyllstrom, Ray
Long, Nancy Osland, Bobbi Tamke, Marilyn Wahlgren,
Doris Wilcox, Jane Zaeske.
Might God be calling you? If you sense that God might be calling you to serve as a
Stephen Minister, the first step is to find out more about
getting involved. Then we would encourage you to
prayerfully consider being part of a new Stephen Ministry
training class beginning in October.
For more information contact one of the Stephen Ministry
Leaders: Pastor Jim (495-2563), Susan Thompson
(367-2625), Marc Wing (495-3570) or visit with any of
our Stephen Ministers.

SYNOD WOMEN’S CONFERENCE REPORT
The 29th Annual NW MN SWO Convention at
Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, was held on
Sept. 11-12.
We began with a business meeting on Friday afternoon
where we elected a new president, Sue Ellwanger of
Parkers Prairie, and treasurer, Carolyn Nelson of Lake
Park. Also three new board members: Marilyn
Grandstand, Margaret Kregerud and Diane Teigland.
The nominating committee will consist of Rita
Buntje, Dorothy Malm and Diedre Nordin. This was
followed by a social hour and banquet, a report on the
Phebe Project and evening service.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the
Phebe Project, as I wasn’t, it has to do with a hospital in
Liberia which was co-founded by the Lutheran Church in
1921 and serves an area of 450,000 people. It is run solely
by diesel generators and consumes over 90,000 gallons of
fuel annually. Sometimes the generators quit working
which is a serious problem for the staff and patients.
The solution is solar energy and the 2014 Triennial
Convention passed a resolution to partner with Rural
Renewable Energy alliance to construct a solar array at
Phebe. This year 25 % of the offering at the convention
will go to this worthwhile project.
Saturday began with a moving worship service.
The organ in that church is magnificent, so the music was
wonderful. The theme of the convention was Galatians
5:22, “But the fruit of the spirit is...joy.” Bishop
Wohlrabe spoke about joy, using the movie INSIDE OUT
as an illustration. I had seen the movie, but didn’t get
it...now I do. Two things I learned about joy. It is not the
absence of sadness, but the presence of God. Also, the
difference between joy and happiness is that joy is
enduring while happiness is fleeting. The guest speaker,
Nancy Schafer (former first lady of North Dakota) and
Bible study leader (Pastor Laurie Natwick) shared a lot
about joy, and we even sang some joyous songs like “I’ve
Got the Joy, Joy Joy Joy Down In My Heart”.
The Bible study was followed by lunch, a sing-
along, announcements and Mary Magdalene Awards. We
then had a choice of workshops, one being a hands on
project of putting together fleece blankets...quite a number
were made. The final speaker before the closing was
Dawn Kaiser who talked about spreading “Joy To The
World.” One of my favorite Bible verses was at the end
of the program, “Weeping may endure for the night, but
joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5.
Again, I thank you for the opportunity to act as a
delegate from our church, and wish more of you could
have experienced the joy. By the way, we will no longer
be in Cluster 8 after Feb. 1 of next year. Instead of 10
clusters, there will be 8 and we will be in #7 with a few
new churches like Ashby and Vining.

Phyllis Johnson, is
now living at Mankato’s Pathstone
Memory Care facility. There, she is
happy and safe. Phyllis has
developed an FTD, a frontal
temporal dementia which is
severely affecting our lives. She can
no longer carry on a conversation
nor read the newspaper nor watch
TV. With a very limited attention
span, Phyllis is not the able, light
hearted Norwegian she once was.
Well, she is still Norwegian, but she
no longer finds the humor in it. It is
sad to see how quickly this tragic
disease has taken her away. I can
bring email messages to her through
have a Caring Bridge page for her

So far today, God, I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or over-indulgent. I'm really glad about that. But in a few minutes, God, I'm going to get out of bed and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help.
