Dear Valued Customer

Independent Media recognises the importance of the youth as an integral part of a healthy cultural, economic and political structure. We have been part of South Africa’s youth since 1976 and we remain committed to shaping the future of our youth. We have the power and the influence to reach the nation’s young people and make a profound shift in their lives and, in turn, the lives of all South Africans and the rest of the continent. Of our 4.1 million weekly and daily readers, 44% are youth between 18-35 years of age.

Through The Young Independents we will ensure that the youth across the continent are fully recognised and given a voice to articulate their own narrative through knowledge, skills and qualifications, empowering them to become agents of political, social and economic transformation.

Through our media assets (print, digital and events), The Young Independents will celebrate and recognise the youth through its first initiative, 100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders, which will launch in June 2016, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Youth Month. This will be closely followed by an inaugural Youth Summit in Johannesburg, which aims to bring together the best and brightest young people to affect positive change and start a powerful youth movement.

Our multi-media solution offers you,100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders, to participate and showcase your brand message in a dedicated national supplement, 100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders which will be released on 8 June 2016, along with a digital platform and youth summit which will serve to educate and inspire young people by creating a dynamic network of skills, talents and ideas.

Align your organisation’s youth initiatives to the Young Independents and together we will shape a new narrative and vision for our youth.

100 Inspiring and Aspiring LeadersWe recognize that young people don’t fit into traditional categories or ways of working. Most of them are lateral thinkers who use technology to develop brands around their skills and talents, often crossing between categories and industries. Our annual list of 100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders enables and celebrates this fact with five categories that seek to capture the drive and spirit of our youth more than a CV ever could. This annual supplement and microsite will serve as the anchor for all of The Young Independents initiatives.

The list will center around five categories:

Trailblazers: Young people who are leading their field through their continual achievements on the local and even international stage. They are the awarded and applauded (think: top sports stars, academics, scientists and business leaders.)

Disruptors: young people who disrupt the status quo, traditional thinking, challenging us with their ideas and actions. (think:, artists, writers, media, civil society)

Innovators: young people who have invented a new product, business idea or service that is changing the way we live, work and play. (think: business drivers, technology gurus, scientists, architects, chefs)

Healers: young people who are driven to heal our planet and society with their hands and heads. (think: environmentalists, medical practitioners, educators, civil society) Influencers: young people who are influencing the actions and behaviours of brands, policies and people. (think: government leaders, trend setters, social media gurus, critics)
