Vol. CXV No. VI August 2017
I t is August at the Milford Yacht Club, and the sailing season is in full swing. The jun-ior sailors are attending regattas at neighboring clubs, after having successfully host-
ed the annual Optisail Regatta on July 26, 2017. Our membership can take pride in the efforts and accomplishments of our junior sailors. Many of the Opti sailors are involved in the end of season competition to win the prestigious Dicker Award. The Dicker is awarded to the winner of an Opti series in the name of the late F.H. “Dick” Hovey, P.C., long-time Junior Sailing Master.
The new adults participating in the Summer of Sailing program are enjoying their new
found sailing skills. It is a wonderful program organized by Fleet Captain, Doug Jones, P.C., but run by many of the seasoned sailors of the Club. It is a great opportunity for the new sailors to learn and get the sailing bug.
The PHRF sailors begin the month with the Milford Invitational Boardman Cup regatta on August 5, 2017. It is a well-attended event, with great competition between area
clubs. August also brings the annual MYC Club Cruise and Rendezvous. This year’s event is hosted by Tina and Bud Franke at Brewer Essex Island Marina from August 18th through 20th. Saturday night’s Island Sunset Party will feature entertainment provided by the Caribbean steel drum duo, Steel Dreams. The Island Sunset Party is also available to those that want to come over land and meet the cruisers at the marina.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate, on behalf of the membership, Josh Revkin and Eivind Melleby, for winning the 2017 Star World Championship. The Championship took place in Troense, Denmark, in a series that concluded on July 8, 2017. Josh and his dad, Dr. James Revkin, were both active in the Star fleet at MYC. Josh recently relocated, but his dad, Jim, remains a member of the Star fleet. Again congratulations to Josh and Eivind and we all wish them success at the 2017 SSL Finals, in Nassau, Bahamas December 4th through 9th.
I also want to thank all of the MYC volunteers that help keep all of the sailing programs running and bringing great fun to the Club.
Finally, on behalf of the Milford Yacht Club family, I want to congratulate longtime member and volunteer, Nell Moll, for receiving the first Distinguished Citizen of Milford Award from Mayor Benjamin G. Blake on July 27, 2017, for her tireless efforts in working behind the scenes for the City of Milford.
Remember, there is plenty of season left!

The Yachting Issue The theme of this month’s Rudder is yachting, as a reminder of our roots. Since its founding in 1903, the Milford Yacht Club has transformed into so much more than just a yacht club. This edition features highlights from our MYC Star Class sailors, our MYC junior sailors and our members traveling the high seas.

2017 Milford Yacht Club Invitational
Challenge for the Boardman Cup Saturday, August 5th
The Milford Yacht Club’s premier big boat event is just around the corner and is celebrating its 31st anniver-sary. All members are invited to join the sailors and enjoy this great racing tradition. The tradition began in 1986 with the Milford Invitational Regatta. The idea to add the challenge for the Boardman Cup was con-ceived by then Rear Commodore, Ed Becker, the PRO for this year’s event. At the time, MYC purchased many of its trophies from the Boardman Silver Company in Meriden, Connecticut. The company’s generous owner was an MYC member and R.C. Becker approached him about creating a magnificent pewter trophy for this new facet of the race. The challenge and the cup were named for its donor.
A blow-out post-race party will feature live music by Sidekick, food, drink and merriment. $5 Dark n’ Stormys
All Members Welcome $15.00++

1979. Over the years, Al has served in all of the of-
ficer positions, at times pulling multiple tours of duty.
Al’s background reads like a riveting novel. He’s
sailed the seas aboard commercial oystering boats,
holds a Master’s Degree in Communications Technol-
ogy, worked in the early days of the IT and high-tech
industries, owned and operated a successful fish mar-
ket (boasting the largest lobster tank in Connecticut)
and seafood restaurant, specializing in unique, gour-
met family recipes. As an educator, he was Director of
Media and Instruction for the Orange school system,
personally re-writing school curricula, and spent 25
years as an elementary school principal.
Al sailed with the MYC Star fleet for 10 years and now
may be found aboard al dente’, his 31-foot, Carver

Nominating, Marina and Anglers’.
The depth and breadth of Al’s life experience are clear
in his dry wit, knowing smile and pragmatic advice.

Josh Revkin and Eivind Melleby Win the 2017 Star World Championship
Josh Revkin, son of MYC member, Dr. James Revkin, along with Norwegian skipper, Eivind Melleby, has
won the 2017 Star World Championship in Troense, Denmark. It was a hard fought battle in the 6th race of
the series among the leaders and potential winners of the 94th edition of this prestig-
ious trophy: Lars Grael was the world champion for the first 4 legs of the regatta, but
suffered a big comeback by the American and Norwegian in the last upwind. Revkin
and Melleby read the shifts better and were able to go from tenth position to eighth
with enough boats between him and the 2015 Star World Champion.
Revkin and Melleby will go up 2,500 points on the SSL (Star Sailors League) ranking,
allowing them to be in the top ten and earning a spot at the 2017 SSL Finals, in Nas-
sau, Bahamas from December 4th to 9th. Visit starclass.org for more information.
MYC Members Do St. Thomas to Newport Delivery
MYC members Tom Sbabo, Holly Danowski and Pete Bo-
gucki recently completed a delivery of the S/V Hold Fast, a
62-foot Oyster sailboat, from St. Thomas, USVI to her sum-
mer destination in Newport, RI. Tom and Holly completed
the 4-1/2 day, 850 nm leg from St. Thomas to Bermuda just
in time to enjoy
some pre-
America’s Cup
festivities. Pete
jumped on board
in Bermuda and
saw Hold Fast’s
safe passage to
Newport with Captain Mark Myers. Highlights included
crossing the 19,000 foot-deep Puerto Rican Trench and
encountering a waterspout about 4 miles southeast of the
vessel. See a quick video of the blue water above.

Wait...What?
In 1934, the Milford Yacht Club merged with a rival club to become the present-day
Milford Yacht Club. What was the name of the rival club?
a) Paugussett Yacht Club
b) Wepawaug Yacht Club
c) Ansantawae Boat Club
d) Rub-a-Dub Yacht Club
The first member to email the correct answer to [email protected] wins a free drink!
Congratulations to John McGill, P.C. who won last month’s Wait...What? trivia question! John was
the first to correctly answer “1970” as the last year that the House Rules prohibited women from
standing at the bar.
THE MILFORD SAILING FOUNDATION
In 1997, Mead Batchelor, P.C. and F.H. “Dicker” Hovey, P.C. pondered how a few Star sailors could contribute to the growth
and quality of sailing, particularly junior sailing. As so it would have it, the answer was the formation of The M.Y.C. Sailing
Foundation, LTD, a not-for profit philanthropic organization established in
1998 to promote sailing and to enhance the junior sailing experience.
The Foundation, now known as The Milford Sailing Foundation, began with
few activities as funds were limited. Over the years the Foundation has re-
ceived both monetary contributions and like-kind donations and has assisted
the sailing programs at Milford Yacht Club and beyond.
The Milford Sailing Foundation has grown dramatically this year under the
strong chairmanship of MYC Past Commodore and current MYC Treasurer,
Bruce P. Kuryla. Its scope has expanded beyond just the juniors. The Foun-
dation has provided MYC with a fleet of seven J-22 sloops and a number of
other boats, which have been used for instruction by both the juniors and the adults at MYC. The Club has helped by insuring,
storing and maintaining the boats. It has been a great relationship. The Foundation is excited to announce that it is preparing a
Cal 24 and C&C 35 for club member use and as a possible component of junior training.
The Foundation has benefited from club members’ donations of boats and cash gifts. All such contributions are greatly ap-
preciated and are used to promote sailing at the Club and throughout the region. The Milford Sailing Foundation is a not-for-
profit 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. Further information may be found at MilfordSailingFoundation.org.
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and sky. And all I ask is a tall ship and a star
to steer her by. And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sails shaking, and a grey
mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide. Is a wide call and a clear call
that may not be denied, And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, and the
flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life. To the gull’s way and the whale’s way,
where the wind’s like a whetted knife. And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rov-
er. And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over. ~ John Masefield (1902). 7
