Breaking a Poverty Mentality—Step One: Understand the Root of Materialism


Materialism: When we use something material to fill a spiritual need. Idolatry is anything or anyone that replaces God’s rightful place in your life.

Materialism is rooted in a poverty mentality, caused by a spiritual poverty developed by a lack of relationship with God.


Genesis 5:28-29 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. He named him Noah and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed.”


Breaking a Poverty Mentality—Step Two: Recognize That God Is Your Source


1Chronicles 29:12-14 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.


Deuteronomy 8:17-18 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
