Ordering Microfilm from FamilySearch

Finding Your Reel in the Catalog:

1. Go to www.familysearch.org. Place your mouse over the Search button at the top of the FamilySearch web page. A drop-down menu will appear. Click Catalog.

2. This will bring you to the FamilySearch catalog search page. Think of this page as you would the

PINES catalog page: it’s an online index to all the FamilySearch records, including printed books, microforms, and digital records.

You can search for information by:

a. Place b. Name(s) c. Title d. Author e. Subject f. Keyword

For example, to do a Place search type a place name in the search box. Click the matching place from the list that appears. Click Search.

3. The Search Results lists record types for the location. Click the record type you are interested in.

4. A list of specific records appears. Click the title you are interested in.

5. This will bring you to the catalog record for this item. Read the information about the item, including the Notes section. The notes will alert you to any restrictions on the record. Check carefully for “no circulation” notices.

6. If the record has no restrictions, scroll down to the Film Notes to find the film number. Click the film number to go to the Online Film Ordering website and place the order.

Placing Your Order (Using the Online Film Ordering Website)

7. When you click on the number you will be redirected to the Online Film Ordering website. If you

haven’t already, you will need to sign in to your FamilySearch account before continuing.

8. Click the radio button (small circle) beside the type of loan you wish to purchase: a. Short-term Microfilm Loans ($7.50) have a 90-day duration, beginning when the order

ships. FamilySearch guarantees a minimum of 60 days to view the film. If you find, near the end of the loan period, that you need more time with the film, you will have the option to purchase a Renewal.

b. Extended Microfilm Loans ($18.75) remain in the Heritage Room (or Family History Center/Affiliate Library) indefinitely, or until they have been recalled by FamilySearch. Microfilm that has not been used for a long time may also be returned to create more space for new microfilm.

Review the film information and click Add to Cart.

9. Review the Shopping Cart Contents. Click the to the right of any item to remove it from the Shopping Cart. Click Continue Shopping to add another item to the order. When the Cart has all desired items, click Proceed to Checkout.

10. Enter (or review) billing address information. Click Continue.

11. Select the payment method: PayPal or Credit Card. The Credit Card option includes a credit card, debit card, or prepaid card that is branded MasterCard or Visa. Click Continue.

12. Review the order. Scroll down to read the Microfilm User Agreement. Click the check box above I

Accept. Click Edit Your Cart if changes are needed in the order. When you are ready to confirm the order, click Place Order. YOU’RE NOT DONE YET! You still have to enter payment information.

13. Review Shipping and Billing information. Note the order number. Fill in payment information. When entering a credit card number, do not use dashes or spaces. When you are ready to send the order, click Place Order. Now you have successfully placed your order.

14. The order is complete and will begin processing. Print a copy of the order confirmation if desired. In addition, emails will be sent updating you on the progress of your order.

Email Update Notifications You will receive an email update from [email protected] when any of the following actions occur:

1. An order is placed. 2. An item ships. 3. An item is placed on backorder. 4. Items are marked “Received” in the Heritage Room. 5. Items are seven (7) days prior to the return date. 6. Items are marked returned by the Heritage Room.

Checking the Status of an Order

1. Go to https://familysearch.org/films and sign in to your account. 2. Directly under the title Online Film Ordering, click My Account. 3. The Account Dashboard shows recent orders. Click View to see the status of each item in an

order. 4. Scroll down to the Items Ordered. The status of each item will appear. When an item has been

marked as received in the center, the return date will show. When an item is renewed, the new return date or the extended loan status will show. Please note that old orders will remain on the Account Dashboard indefinitely. This will include canceled orders and orders that never moved past the pending status. Old order with a status of pending will never be charged to your credit card not PayPal account.

Cancelling an Order

1. Each item on an order remains in a pending status for the first twenty-four hours. This allows you time to cancel the order within that time period. To cancel a pending item, go to https://familysearch.org/films and sign in to your account.

2. Directly under the title Online Film Ordering, click My Account. 3. Click View beside the order needing to be cancelled. Scroll to the Items Ordered to verify the

order status is pending. 4. Scroll back up. Directly under the order number, click Cancel Order. 5. Click OK. 6. A message will appear confirming the cancellation.

Renewing Reels

1. Go to https://familysearch.org/films and sign in to your account. 2. Directly under the title Online Film Ordering, click My Account. 3. The Account Dashboard shows recent orders. Click View beside the order you’d like to review. 4. Click on the Film Number of the reel you’d like to renew. 5. If you already have reels checked out on your account on a Short-Term Microfilm Loan but you

need more time with them, you have two options for Renewing the reel:

a. You may choose a second Short-Tem Microfilm Loan Renewal ($7.50 for another 60 days) b. Or, you may choose an Extended Microfilm Loan Renewal ($18.75 for unlimited viewing)

6. Click on the renewal option you’d like, and click “Add to Cart.” 7. Proceed with the checkout process.

Changing Your Default Family History Center or Affiliate Library

1. You can change the Family History Center or Affiliate Library where you want your films to be sent, find the address and telephone number to the center, change the billing address, or make needed changes to the name associated with the account from the Online Film Ordering Website.

2. To find the address and telephone number of the center, or to change your default center, go to https://familysearch.org/films and sign in to your account.

3. Directly under the title Online Film Ordering, click My Account. 4. From the list on the right, click My Family History Center. The center name and telephone

number will appear. 5. Click Change Family History Center or Find New FHC to select a different center or library

where future orders will be delivered. Please note that the change will not affect orders made previously.

6. Select the country and region desired and click Search. 7. Scroll through the alphabetical list to find a center or library for viewing microfilms and

microfiche. Click the radio button (small circle) to select it. Click Save. 8. The new center or library will now show as your default Family History Center.

Adding to or Changing Your Address Book

1. To Change the billing address or add a new address, go to https://familysearch.org/films and sign in to your account.

2. Directly under the title Online Film Ordering, click My Account. 3. From the list on the right, click Address Book. 4. View the Default Billing Address and any additional addresses that have been entered. Click

Change Billing Address to make needed changes. 5. Fill in contact information, and click Save Address. 6. An additional address can also be entered by clicking Add New Address. Fill in contact

information, and click Save Address.
