Here we are again in the Salone del Mobile in Milan. This is one of the most eagerly anticipated and important yearly appointments in the city and attracts visitors from all over the world.Every year there are a multitude of things to see, happenings and appointments. Creativity, originality and communication are the strongest themes.Mario Cucinella’s exhibit really struck me. This internationally famous architect showed us a space entirely dedicated to sustainability. At the press presentation, Cucinella (who produced eco-friendly architectural designs before the subject of environmental sustainability was fashionable) spoke about the challenge of combining low-cost quality with renewable energy and of the need to have architecture which was a part of people’s lives

and capable of improving their lives and facing the most important challenges of the 21st century. He spoke on the theme of a design (or a product) created from the user’s point of view. He called it “creative empathy”, an expression which appealed to me a lot.Empathy is the ability to emotionally and intellectually put yourself in another person’s shoes. It is the cornerstone of civilization. Cucinella understands this. As does Alejandro Aravena, the Chilean architect who won the 2016 Pritzker Award (the Nobel Prize of architecture) for having created buildings which “give the less privileged something they can afford, can sustain natural disasters, reduce energy consumption and provide a welcoming atmosphere”.Could this be the key to the long term survival of our species?

THE RIGHT WAY TO TAKE CARE OF A WOOD FLOOR

In order to ensure that your parquet maintains its characteristics

virtually unaltered over time, you need to perform regular maintenance and cleaning, bearing in mind both the type of usage the floor undergoes (heavy

transit or not) and its finish. The first thing to do is to identify the type of finish your parquet received at the moment of laying (varnish, wax, or oil): this will determine the type of maintenance you need to perform - and the finish is not always easy to identify. In order to make sure that the surface has been given wax treatment, drop a few droplets of water in a relatively concealed area

be evident from the sight and the touch.A general reminder: products for care of floors of all types should be used only in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.

of the floor: if a few whitish points appear beneath the droplets after a few minutes, you can be sure that the floor has been finished with wax (in order to remove those spots, delicately polish the floor with steel wool moistened

MAINTENANCE OF COATED FLOORS

NORMAL MAINTENANCEHow long a protective treatment lasts depends on the intensity of use of the floor. An indication is given in the table below which shows periods of maintenance in relation to how much people traffic there is.

with wax). If drops of water do not produce whitish spots, your parquet has probably been finished with oil or perhaps a more modern synthetic varnish; the latter will most certainly

• Little use: for example, bedroom

• Medium use: for example, dining room, living room, hallways

• Heavy use: entrances, shops, offices

The floor can only be cleaned for the first time 7 days after it has been painted. Maintenance can begin 2-4 weeks after painting. Correct, regular cleaning and maintenance of the floor help to make it last longer.

EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCE: RECOATINGAfter years of being walked on, a wood floor may have signs of wear and tear. However, in contrast to many other types of floor, it can be completely renewed by:• Substituting any

particularly damaged pieces

• Planing• Filling• Sanding• RecoatingPlaning or sanding should remove all traces of previous finishes (old paint, wax, products for maintenance).

MAINTENANCE OF WAX-TREATED FLOORS

NORMAL MAINTENANCEThe frequency of maintenance depends on the intensity of people traffic on the floor. Suggestions are contained in the following table which shows the frequency in relation to the amount of use.

EXTRAORDINARY MAINTENANCEThis consists of a new coating of wax which is done after the whole floor has been cleaned with a cloth dampened with wax solvent. The wax coating is followed by polishing.

Normally, sanding would start with sandpaper no. 30-36 to remove old, hardened paint more easily and finish with no. 60-80. After filling, sanding is done using sandpaper no. 100-120.If there are wax or silicone products present which have deeply penetrated the spaces between the parquet elements, it is advisable to use a fast bi-component polyurethane undercoat or an insulating undercoat. After sanding has been carried out and everything is completely dry, repainting can begin.

A FEW TRICKS Here are a few “tricks” to maintain the beauty of parquet over time: • Always place a doormat before the

doorstep • Aerate your rooms frequently • Always keep room temperature

between 15 and 25°C • Always keep room humidity between

50 and 65%. • Never utilize corrosive products for

floor cleaning and maintenance • Always attach felt pads to the legs of

tables, chairs, and furniture • Avoid keeping the parquet covered

with carpeting for extended periods• Never pour boiling liquids on the

floor • When washing the floor, never pour

water directly onto the floor directly; always use a moistened cloth

• Never use cloths that have been used to clean other surfaces (marble, ceramic)

• Always protect parquet with a tarpaulin whenever renovation work or painting is foreseen

MAINTENANCE OF OIL-TREATED FLOORSCleaning is carried out in exactly the same way as for varnished floors. Then liquid wax for oil-treated parquet is used following the manufacturer’s instructions. The floor can be finished with a polisher or with a natural fibre cloth.Do not exceed the recommended quantities. In particular do not wet the floor with too much water or liquid wax in order to avoid whitening. When the whole or part of the floor is subjected to heavy use, a moderate amount of oil can be spread on it with a cloth and after a 10-minute wait a polisher with a wool cloth can be passed over it, rubbing energetically.

THE ART OF RESTORATION

A parquet floor layer is an artist.

Particularly when he is capable

of restoring an antique floor, as in

this case

TEXT

FEDERICA FIORELLINI

“Architects, sculptors, painters, we

all need to go back to our roots! Art is not a profession. There is no essential difference between and artist and an artisan. An artist is just an artisan with drive”.Walter Gropius wrote this in the Bauhaus Manifesto published in 1919. Artist and artisan are two sides of the same coin. From the confrontation and dialogue between them, there comes that excellence which is revealed in differences, union and competition. In our opinion, a parquet floor layer who is

dedicated to restoring antique floors is an artist. To do this, you need manual dexterity, technology and science. You need to be able to find the original documentation, to identify the date of manufacture and the type of wood used for the floor. Then, there has to be a chart of the surface, graphic designs which provide models for transferring the designs (inlays) onto semi-finished wood. And many other things besides. This is what Pietro Belloni, an Italian floor layer specialized in “unusual” jobs has done. “I love working with large areas

state. The antique animal-based glue with which the decorative slats had been stuck to the pine support to create the design were completely worn out with age and because of the variations in humidity and temperature.“I had to look for wood which was the nearest possible to the original”, reminisces the floor layer, “because some of the slats were missing. With great patience I marked all the loose pieces so that I could clean them and glue them again. I then went on to the sanding using a single brush only so as to take away as little of the wood surface as possible. Finally, I filled the parquet with the dust from the sanding and finished off with an oil/wax coating”.A parquet floor layer is an artist. I am sure of it.

of parquet, particularly producing a design or making a herringbone pattern. And then I love restoring old parquet floors. Putting your hands on a historic floor and managing to restore it to its original splendor gives you satisfaction which is difficult to express in words. It’s not easy. I learned from my father and then studied hard for myself. The beauty of this work is gradually finding the right way to go through trials and tribulations”.

SPECIAL PARQUETYou can see it in the floor shown in these images: a very special parquet in which durmast oak, mahogany, maple and rosewood are woven together. When Belloni started work on it, the floor was in a semi-abandoned

Parquet week (Milan 12-17 April 2016) came to an end on

Sunday 17 April. It was the week dedicated to the promotion of wood flooring by the AIPPL and the Salone del Mobile of Milan. A new experience for the sector, it saw an unaccustomed, but happy pairing of the worlds of floor laying and production. Both were involved in showing parquet in a new way at the Parquet Art Gallery, which was visited by more than 5,000 people. The highly suggestive location was a space of 130 sq. m. with an antique ceiling of large, arched, painted beams inside an enchanting courtyard at the most frequented point of Via Tortona, number 12.The concept was that of a modern art gallery. An avant-garde idea which

by furnishing and design, to those who were simply curious. They asked the Association’s experts many questions, watched a video and took away information material such as the exhibition guide, the magazine I Love Parquet. And they could touch the works of art.So, the objective was achieved. This was a demonstration that a new way of communicating and marketing is possible. The recipe ingredients are commitment, passion and creativity. All mixed together with a good dollop of collaboration.“The complete success of the exhibition is a positive sign for the whole sector”, said Dalvano Salvador, chairman of AIPPL, “now we need to keep going and to maintain our common commitment. We have a fantastic product in our hands, we just need to find the right way to get it into our customers’ hearts.”

aimed at demonstrating the concepts of creativity, authenticity and know-how. The visitor was accompanied along an ideal artistic path to discover the large panels/installations made by young artists in collaboration with manufacturers in the sector.

CREATIVITY AT THE HEARTThe creativity and innovation and the choice of presenting the wood floors (and all their complementary products) in an unconventional way were much appreciated and rewarded. Hundreds of people passed through the Parquet Art Gallery every day (we estimate over 5,000 in total) ranging from those interested from a work point of view (architects, designers, retailers and planners), to students, those fascinated

Rusolen the Taylor Collection arises: a perfect mixture in

order to offer a patented and innovative collection, which

presents a high aesthetic value and is made of natural and eco-

friendly materials. Two wisely combined deck boards, create

4 lines of product and eight different configurations.

The deck boards, in Thermo treated Bamboo, are 13.7 x 185 x 2 cm. They are divided in Board

A and Board B depending on the pantographed design on their

surface, which is realized by high precision machines.

The combination of these two deck boards creates 4 lines of
