Package by Kelsey Dubinsky On October 6,2012, e Witches of East Greenwich became the biggest participating team in the Dragon Boat Races, held every year on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 136 mothers from the small, rural town of East Greenwich, NJ came together to make up six boats that raced under the team name. e mother’s participate each year to raise money for three foundations and also a day to enjoy themselves. “Every day we’re about everybody else, we’re mothers, we’re wives, we shuttle our kids back and forth, we do all of this for our families. But on the first Saturday in October we are e Witches of East Greenwhich, a group of moms from our community who come together to step outside our comfort zone and try something new for ourselves, “ said Megan Heyer, the woman who started the team only four years ago. is year the team raised money to be donated to three different organizations. ey donated money to the Headstrong Foundation, a foundation advocating and promoting blood cancer awareness; the Erin Hope Foundation, a foundation in memory of a young girl who was killed by a drunk driver; and each year they donate money towards one scholarship for a young lady that attends Kings Way High School to help her attend college. Race day isn’t just about the women having a good time, but also about raising money for a good cause, spending quality time with their families, and bonding as a community on a nice day along the river.
