he CSIL report “The European Marketfor Lighting Fixtures” has reached its25th edition this year. Over these years,

the market has completely changed due tocontinuous major technological advance-ments that have characterized the lightingindustry.

LEDs AND OTHER INNOVATIONSLEDification is now given as a fact. Figuresproject LED to become the most widespreadlight source by 2020 in EU-28. In 2015, theLED segment accounted for 46% of theEuropean market, registering an increase of36%; more specifically, up 25%-30% for theconsumer segment and around 40% for theprofessional one (commercial, industrial andoutdoor). Innovation in the field of OLED has beendelayed and it will be probably conducted bydifferent players from those involved in theLED transition: as Philips has sold to OLEDWorks its branch and Osram has been focus-ing on automotive, LG Electronics seems tobe investing big money on it. At the same timemany other waves of innovations have beenintroduced and pursued within the lightingindustry, including Lighting for Human Health& Wellbeing and Connected Lighting &Control systems.

CONSOLIDATION OF PRODUCTIONAnother trend concerning the industry is theprogressive consolidation of the production.Analyzing a sample of 35 leading players, forwhich a homogenous time series was avail-able, CSIL registered a concentration of theirmarket shares passing from 57% to 79% inthe last five years. Market share particularlyincreased for Philips Lighting, Zumtobel,Osram, Schréder, Trilux, Fagerhult, Eglo,Glamox, iGuzzini, and Flos. Generally speaking, in 2015 a significantgrowth in revenues was reported by Philips

T Lighting Professional, Trilux, iGuzzini, Flos,Beghelli, Martin Professional, Waldmann,Performance in Lighting, RZB, Thorpe, andXal. At regional level, in 2015 the Europeanproduction of lighting fixtures was worth Eur10.8 billion, registering a 0.8% increase ascompared to 2014. Significant growth in pro-duction was experienced in the UnitedKingdom, Greece and Germany, while a con-traction was registered in Switzerland,Norway and Spain.

CONSUMPTION TRENDS AND TRADEAs for consumption, a total value of Eur14,240 million was recorded in the EU17countries in 2015 (+7.2% compared to 2014).This growth can be almost totally explained bythe increased import of both lighting fixturesand, especially, of components.

THE EUROPEAN MARKET FOR LIGHTING FIXTURES

Imports of lighting fixtures in Europe reachedEur 13,346 million in 2015, with a 11.9%increase compared to 2014; as intra-European imports grow at a slower pace,imports from Asia and Pacific are still boom-ing (+15.5%). In 2015, exports reached avalue of Eur 9,920 million, increasing by 5.9%compared to the previous year; this growthwas mainly driven by the export flows to NorthAmerica and Asia Pacific (+22% and +12%,respectively). The European trade balance recorded adeficit amounting to Eur 3,425 million (+34%compared to 2014). In particular, imports fromAsia and Pacific region exceeded exports byan amount of almost Eur 6 billion (+16%).
