Dear Alpha Delta State Members,

The biennium has been very busy,

and it doesn’t seem possible it is coming

to a close. It has been fun, challenging,

and a learning experience to serve as the

president of Alpha Delta State. The 75th

anniversary of ADS inspired the selec-

tion of my theme: Honoring Our Past–

Building Our Future. As your president,

I have worked to build our future

through sound fiscal planning, strategic

planning, strengthening membership and

continuing the business of our organiza-

tion.

Thanks to the support of the leader-

ship team, chapter officers and all chap-

ter members, we carried out the ‘regular’

work of ADS. In addition, we have re-

vised our Bylaws, reclaimed members,

initiated new members, carried out a Membership Challenge, approved a dues in-

crease, have a Strategic Action Plan in place to guide us into the future, completed

worthwhile 75th Anniversary projects, have increased communication with chapter

presidents, have a fabulous new website, and celebrated our 75th Anniversary in style

with a very special convention. Your part in making the biennium a successful one is

truly appreciated.

The best part of being president is the opportunity to work with the wonderful

women of Alpha Delta State, visit chapters, meet new friends, and build relationships

with our members. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with you. I am looking

forward to continuing the work of ADS through my membership.

Special times, special places, special friends together. The moments pass so

quickly but the memories will last forever. Yours in Genuine Spiritual Fellowship,

After reflecting on the 2011-13 biennium, some recommendations for future work

and/or things I wish I had accomplished are listed below.

Continue utilizing, reviewing, and revising the Strategic Action Plan to build the

future of ADS both short-term and long-term.

Work to increase membership of ADS. Invite early-career educators. Support SEE.

Continue to investigate and implement cost-cutting measures and consider ways to

increase income for ADS.

Seek applicants for state scholarships; review Grimes (Miami University) and White

(OSU) Scholarship regulations.

Develop an investment policy to assist the Finance Committee and Treasurer.

Continue the work on Supporting Corporation with 501(c)3 status for ADS scholar-

ship and grant monies.

Complete paperwork required to compensate paid personnel as contract employees.

Revise the Policies and Procedures Manual for ADS.

Support International projects and increase our presence at International.

Schedule chapter visits to not only highlight chapters, but to also support chapters

that are struggling; make a plan.

Investigate an e-mail service that could be used by the state leadership team, and for

distribution of The Voice.

Consider sponsors for the state conventions.

Continue to share all of the benefits of membership in ΔΚΓ, show our pride, and

remember the honor of membership!

Reaching Out to Children Through Literacy

Project: Success! Success! Success!

Webster’s Online Dictionary defines success as “an event that accomplishes its in-

tended purpose.” The goal for the children’s literacy project was set at one thousand

(1,000) books to be divided among the children’s hospitals of Akron, Cincinnati,

Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo. The 75th Anniversary Ad Hoc Commit-

tee felt this to be an attainable goal. You, the members of Alpha Delta State, are to

be complimented and thanked. YOU adopted this project and fulfilled the goal six

times its original number. Almost six thousand books were collected, giving each

hospital approximately one thousand books to be shared! What generous, kind

hearts, YOU, the members exhibited. The contact person at each hospital has been

overwhelmed by your generosity, for they have all commented that our Delta Kappa

Gamma Society International must be a phenomenal organization of educators. The

members of the 75th Anniversary Committee wish to thank you again and again for

making this project a huge success and for touching the lives of many, many young

children and their parents. We know books can take us to many places which are

beyond our imagination and will help us reach great heights of success.

“Thank you for a wonderful weekend.”

“Everyone was so nice.” “Thank you for

making me feel so happy.” Those were

the sentiments of our A. Margaret Boyd

recipients, Gesnita Nugraheni (Indonesia,

University of Toledo) and Thu Hoan Do

(Vietnam, Ohio University) after attend-

ing the 2013 State Convention. Both la-

dies participated in meetings and various

workshops throughout the convention.

They are most appreciative of the support

they continue to receive from Ohio chap-

ters and members.

The Selections Committee will meet

on May 18 to rank the dossiers received

from the Institute of International Educa-

tion. The committee will also consider

the application of an Alpha Delta State

member who submitted an application by

the February first deadline.

Alpha Delta State members can learn

more about the A. Margaret Boyd Over-

seas Foundation through the Alpha Delta

State web site and by contacting the First

Vice-President.

Governor Surprises Those on Tour Twenty-eight Delta Kappa Gamma members from throughout Ohio, met to tour the

Ohio State House prior to the State Convention on Friday, April 12.

While standing in the rotunda, DKG members on the tour got the surprise of a life

time. Governor John Kasich and aides walked through the rotunda! He stopped for a

few photographs and invited those in attendance to tour the Governor’s Office in the

State House. Governor Kasich’s office is actually in the Rife Center. The Governor’s

Office in the State House is used for ceremonial legislative signings.

It was a tour many will not forget.

Members Reclaimed During the Biennium The Expansion Committee would like to congratulate the fourteen Alpha Delta State

Chapters that were able to reclaim one or more members during this biennium. Nine

chapters were able to reclaim one member: Alpha, Chi, Omega, Alpha Delta, Alpha

Theta, Alpha Tau, Alpha Phi, Beta Rho and Delta Epsilon. The three chapters that re-

claimed two members are Rho, Alpha Omicron and Gamma Delta. A special recogni-

tion to the two Alpha Delta State chapters that were able to reclaim three of their for-

mer members: Alpha Eta and Alpha Psi!

Just because the initiative challenge is now over, it is never too late to reconnect

with former members and invite them back to special chapter meetings. Make a phone

call, send them a copy of your newsletter so they know what is currently happening in

your chapter, or simply reach out to them. Situations change and often a simple gesture

will rekindle their interest in their former Delta Kappa Gamma chapter.

Expansion Committee: Ellen Andrews, Beta Gamma; Nancy Dicken, Alpha Iota;

Kathy McClendon, Zeta; Pat Miles, Alpha Theta and Peggy Brooks, Sigma, Chairman.

Congratulations to the twenty-one chap-

ters who successfully met the require-

ments of the Membership Madness Initia-

tive. To meet the requirements, chapters

had to increase their membership by one,

starting July 1, 2012. If chapters dropped

members, those members had to be re-

placed and then add one more.

The following chapters were recog-

nized at the 2013 State Convention for

meeting the requirements: Alpha, Beta,

Rho, Tau, Chi, Omega, Alpha Delta, Al-

pha Eta, Alpha Theta, Alpha Xi, Alpha

Omicron, Alpha Upsilon, Alpha Chi, Beta

Gamma, Beta Rho, Gamma Gamma,

Gamma Delta, Gamma Theta, Delta Epsi-

lon, Delta Iota and Delta Xi.

The Membership Committee would like to

thank all members and chapters for work-

ing so hard to increase membership in

Delta Kappa Gamma.

Phi; Vicki Quinter, Beta Kappa; Marilyn

Slusser, Delta Kappa; and Emily Wil-

liams, Chairman, Gamma Nu.

Strickland’s Memory Lives On Through Grants The Professional Affairs committee

proudly presented seven young women

with the Esther H. Strickland Student

Teaching grants. They will each receive a

$1,000 award during their semester of

student teaching. Two of the delightful

recipients expressed their gratitude at the

Sunday Breakfast at the State convention:

Tessa Feick (niece of Pam Feick, Alpha

Delta chapter) and Zoe Gastier (family

friend of Ann Todd, Zeta chapter).

Tessa will graduate from The Ohio

State University with certification in mid-

dle childhood education. She will com-

plete her student teaching experience in

the fall of 2013.

Scheduled to student teach in the

spring, 2014, Zoe Gastier is a 4.0 student

at Bowling Green State University work-

ing towards early childhood licensure.

The other five grant recipients in-

clude: Laura Brown, studying special

education with moderate/intensive con-

centration at Kent State University;

Becky Creech, studying special education

at Miami University; Jacqueline Oligee,

English education major at Miami Uni-

versity; Casey Mo-

lesky, early child-

hood education at

Bowling Green

State University;

and Crystal Stan-

ton, integrated lan-

guage arts at

Youngstown State

University.

The sisters of

Alpha Delta State continued to honor the

memory of Esther Strickland as $2,113

was contributed through a free-will col-

lection taken at the birthday luncheon.

Professional Affairs Committee:

Barbara Ade, Gamma Pi; Verlene

DeWitt, Alpha; Jan Stewart, Omega;

Joyce St. Clair, Alpha Nu, Legislative

Advocate; and Sharyn Sibera, Chairman,

Beta Chi.

Finance Committee: Feeling Great Pride and Thankful to Membership The Finance Committee is feeling great

pride in the Executive Board and the

ADS membership tackling the financial

concerns of Alpha Delta State during the

State’s biennium. Decreases in expendi-

tures made during the past two years have

been noted and now we are able to report

the proposed dues increase was approved

at the Convention General Session.

Your State dues, beginning with Fall,

2013, will be $10 for active members and

$5 for reserve members. This is a modest

increase (additional 25¢ a month for ac-

tive members and less than 17¢ a month

for reserve members). However, this

modest increase and continued frugalness

allow ADS to have a balanced budget for

the first time in years. We are definitely

excited about that!

The Finance Committee will be

meeting during the final quarter of this

biennium to work on developing an In-

vestment Policy and Conflict of Interest

Policy. An then, just as you are doing in

your chapters, an end-of-the-year audit

will be completed. We will be using the

Finance Committee Guidelines, checking

each item on pages 6-7 (Guide for the

Financial Review Committee) and upon

satisfactory completion signing that the

Financial Review was completed. The

listing of records and length of retention

on the last page of this document are very

helpful.

We are proud of the improved finan-

cial outlook for Alpha Delta State and

thank all of you for understanding the

needs and being willing to make the

changes to keep our State Society operat-

ing in a responsible manner.

Finance Committee: Pam Feick, Al-

pha Delta; Patricia Eshbaugh, Beta Psi;

Connie Fleming, Alpha Tau; Annie

Roegner, Beta Lambda; and Meier Bau-

er, Gamma Phi, Chairman.

Fifteen lucky Alpha Delta State members

received portfolios which included five

scholarship brochures and applications,

plus a free piece of jewelry from K and K

Interiors at the 75th Anniversary Conven-

tion. This promotion encouraged mem-

bers to visit the Scholarship Committee at

the Info Fair, to learn of past recipients

and their chapters, and to motivate mem-

bers to apply for scholarships.

During the next two years, these new

scholarship recruiters will assist the com-

mittee to help spread scholarship news by

viewing scholarship information on-line

at www.alphadeltastate.weebly.com, con-

tacting committee members for clarifica-

tion or concerns, and applying by the

February 1st deadline. The recruiters are

Pat Miles, Alpha Theta; Judy Gebhart, Pi;

Maureen Coon, Alpha Lambda; Sharon

Duffie, Delta Tau; Diana McFadden, Al-

pha Gamma; Marilyn Bauer, Delta Gam-

ma; Susan Harris, Gamma Pi; Karen

Dunn, Alpha Psi; Diane Page, Alpha Eta;

Debby Canter, Delta Epsilon; Brenda

Armstrong, Sigma; Nancy S. Waters,

Gamma Chi; Diana Hurlow, Lambda;

Debra Barrickman, Alpha Alpha; and

Mary Ann Goetz, Alpha Psi.

Scholarship funds may be used for

one or more classes at an approved uni-

versity. Further, applicants must meet

entrance and grade point requirements of

the graduate school; however, applicants

do not need to be working towards an

advanced degree. The Margaret L. White

and Ruth Grimes Scholarships have sub-

stantial funds at The Ohio State Universi-

ty and Miami University respectively,

which might be a motivating factor for

members living near those areas.

During the recent Alpha Delta State Convention, recipients of awards granted in Feb-

ruary 2013, by the Board of Trustees of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Founda-

tion were recognized. Michelle Langmeyer, Beta Upsilon chapter, received an award

of $2,500 for her project, “Intercultural Understanding Through Foods and Nutrition

Appreciation Around the World.” The award will be used to help students focus on

food skills and cooking techniques used in other countries as well as school and agri-

cultural differences around the world. Michelle’s family and consumer science stu-

dents will be financially able to take a field trip to an international food mall in Cincin-

nati as part of their study.

Melodie McGee, Gamma Nu chapter, was awarded a grant of $1,360 for her pro-

ject, “My 2nd Time Around, An Adult Learner’s Mathematical Journey Continues.”

The project will target the urban adult education student population who are returning

to school to improve their literacy/mathematical skills as well as an opportunity to earn

their GED certificates. “Hands-on” resources will be provided by this grant to meet

diverse developmental needs of the students.

A grant renewal of $1,500 was awarded to Barbara Cleveland, Gamma Nu chapter

(and mother of Melodie McGee) for her project, “Math Discovery’s At Home Math

Talk Program.” The project supports and encourages intercultural understanding and

standards of excellence in education with “at risk/homeless” families in Columbus

through the Dowd Education Center. Families are encouraged to become involved in

their children’s math education by creating a “Take-Me-Home-and-Share” math book

program.

A Lucile Cornetet Professional Development Award of $950 was received by Ann

Todd, Zeta chapter. Ann’s award will be used to attend the 2013 National Leadership

Forum—Marching Off the Map: Charting the Course for the Next Decade of Student

Development. The conference will be held in June in Atlanta, Georgia.

In February, 2013, thirty-five (35) projects and renewals totaling $120,048 and ten

(10) professional development awards totaling $12,145 were granted by the Founda-

tion's Board of Trustees. In existence since 1964, the Foundation encourages standards

of excellence in education; provides grants for women scholars to carry out study and

research; and assists and cooperates with schools, colleges, universities and other per-

sons, organizations, trust funds or foundations in the support, encouragement, and im-

provement of education.

Alpha Delta State members congratulate these women for their awards and extend

continued support for their efforts to enhance educational endeavors within the scope

Alpha Nu Sponsors Cinderella’s Closet The 2013 Cinderella’s Closet sponsored by Alpha Nu Chapter, was held on Saturday,

April 13, 2013 in Lancaster, Ohio. All girls in grades 8-12 from Fairfield County were

invited to attend. Articles were published in the local newspaper and posted on the

newspaper’s website. Students posted information on Facebook and tweeted the details

to spread the word. Posters were delivered to all high schools in Fairfield County.

Over 400 donated dresses and many accessories (jewelry, shoes, purses, wraps)

were available for the girls to choose free of charge. Each girl was assigned a volunteer

Fairy Godmother to assist in their dress selection. Of the 18 volunteers who participat-

ed, 11 were Alpha Nu members.

Eighty-one girls from 21 different schools attended the event with 66 girls finding

dresses and two girls taking only accessories.

A big thanks to Jay Bahnsen, Alpha Nu, who coordinates this very important pro-

ject that allows young ladies to have a Cinderella Night at their High School Prom.

In December, members of Beta Nu

Chapter met at Messiah Lutheran

Church to wrap holiday gifts for the

ladies and children living at the Greater

Cincinnati YWCA Battered Women’s

Shelter. The wrapped gifts, along with

a donation of Wal-Mart gift cards, were

delivered to Chan Williams, donation

coordinator at the Shelter. Jennifer Sit-

ler, Director of the BWS, expressed her

thanks for the gifts that would brighten

the holiday season and enhance the

services for those staying at the Shelter.

The YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter

provides safe refuge for women and

children fleeing violence in their

homes. Nearly 800 individuals are

served each year through their crisis

hotline, shelter services, and case man-

agement. Beta Nu is proud to be a small

part of this important service to our

community.

Each semester Zeta Chapter of Huron County provides service and support to a ran-

domly selected classroom teacher. DKG sisters everywhere realize that teachers

have limited time to accomplish all the things that need to be done to deliver high

quality educational experiences for students and to that end Zeta Chapter invites

teachers within the county to participate in its Zeta Adopt a Classroom (ZAC) pro-

ject. All buildings in all districts in Huron County are included in the ZAC project

which began in 2009 under the leadership of Dottie Pickering.

The process begins with a random drawing to determine a building within the

county. Teachers from the selected building are then encouraged to apply for what

they REALLY need to improve educational opportunities for students. When a

teacher’s application is then drawn from the pool of applicants, Zeta Chapter heads

to the selected teacher’s classroom to assist for the entire semester!

The type of help supplied is based upon what the selected teacher needs and

what the chapter is able to offer. Some examples of support include: help construct-

ing visual aids/bulletin boards, grading, record keeping, filing, copying, one-on-one

tutoring, small-group tutoring, purchasing items for the classroom, etc.

On one occasion a calculus teacher requested calculators applicable to higher

level math since a number of her students could not afford their own. Zeta provided

her with funds to purchase the necessary calculators which then enabled her to set up

a classroom “lending library” to loan out the calculators to students.

The current ZAC winner is a Spanish teacher. To enliven lessons involving

clothing vocabulary, the teacher asked for donations of clothing students could then

don to make their conversational Spanish practice more realistic. Nine large bags

later, the teacher had everything from clunky jewelry to golden slippers, sport coats

to sweaters, gowns, scarves, and handbags. One item sure to be prized in the Span-

ish class dress-up trunk is a flamenco cape donated by Barbara Smith.

The ZAC project has proven to be a way to get our name and good deeds into

the schools in our community where we otherwise might not have access.

Unique Clothes Sent to Children in Haiti Beta Nu member and math teacher, Lana Gerber, spearheaded a project to collect

pillowcases from her students and colleagues at Finneytown High School in Cincin-

nati. Volunteers transformed the pillowcases into dresses and shorts for needy chil-

dren in Haiti. In March, Lana's church mission team from Maineville United Meth-

odist Church, along with the mission team from Owensville UMC, delivered over

1,500 pillowcase dresses and 1,500 pillowcase shorts to the children in Haiti! Lana

is proud of her school's overwhelming response and Beta Nu is very proud of Lana.

Way to go Alpha Delta State members!

A “Note” of Appreciation ... Dear Delta Tau, Beta Kappa, Alpha Phi, Gamma Eta, Delta Kappa, Alpha,

Omega, Tau, Alpha Zeta, Beta Lambda and Alpha Delta Chapters:

The key to our success rests in people like you, who embody the spirit of greatness by saying, "Yes I can, and will step up to help you!"

Thanks for your inspiring commitment and tremendous example of Alpha Delta State spirit. We, thank you!

Now that our work is finished, we say good bye with sad yet grateful hearts. We want to thank you for your support, and being there from the very start. Words cannot convey our gratitude for your tremendous contribution to our

75th Anniversary Celebration. We, thank you!

With grateful hearts we wanted to thank you with this “note of appreciation” as our personal round of applause.

The credit for our success firmly rests with our dedicated, willing and able “steering committee members.” We, thank you!

Thanks so much for all of your hard work and to witness your enthusiasm was truly an unexpected perk. We never could have asked for a more inspired and competent “crew” of volunteers and words will never fully

express how grateful we are to have had you there. It was indeed a pleasure, as well as, a privilege to work with each and every one of you.

Our infinite thanks!

President Norma and Diana Kirkpatrick, Convention Coordinator

Looking Back at 1938 — Over the years, “God Bless America” has often been part of

the opening ceremony of an Alpha Delta State convention. This year, it was especially

appropriate because Kate Smith sang “God Bless America” for the very first time in

1938, the year of our founding. A few other interesting 1938 facts discovered while

researching the 75th Anniversary include:

The first Superman comic book was issued, DuPont unveiled a new synthetic fi-

ber, nylon and the comic strip “Dennis the Menace” made its first appearance.

Ballpoint pens were introduced.

Boys Town, Jezebel, and Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs were popular movies.

Bread cost 9 cents, a postage stamp was 3 cents, hamburger was 13 cents a pound,

and a new car cost about $763.

Orsen Well’s The War of the World was broadcast.

Without much warning, a hurricane slammed into the East Coast with forty foot

waves. 63,000 residents were homeless on Long Island.

German troops invaded Austria.

The 1938 Buckeyes had a 4-3-1 record coached by Francis Schmidt and sadly lost

to Michigan 0-18 before a crowd of 64,413.

Delta Kappa Gamma’s National Convention was held in Denver where a single

room cost $4.00 and $1.50 would pay your way into the Birthday Luncheon.

There were 6,297 members nationally.
