The Visionary 1 The Visionary Ventura ∞ Santa Barbara ∞ San Luis Obispo FALL 2007 The Presidents Message 2008 Will Be a Giant Year for our Profession! Two major pieces of legislation that will directly affect optometry as we know it will be headed through Sacramento in 2008. In addition to changes in the law, Scott Kamena, OD will be running for the CA State Assembly, while Ed Hernandez, OD will be running for re-election, in 2008. One of the bills will involve healthcare for all or most Californians, and your dues (if you’re a member) are helping the COA play an integral role in trying to make sure that optometrists are included as providers (previously proposed bills specifically excluded ODs!). If you’re not a COA/TCOS member, please join – the money you pay helps to insure professional stability and growth. The second piece of legislation will deal with expansion of the scope of optometric law in California. You may recall the mid-90’s battle that was waged with the CMA over the right for ODs to use TPAs. As part of that ‘deal’ we promised to not attempt expansion of our scope of practice until now. The COA performed a survey last year asking for your input on what would be important to CA ODs. Over 1/3 of the licensed docs responded! – an overwhelmingly high percentage for a survey. Thanks to all of you who participated – the COA will be heeding your advice when it comes to negotiations with organized medicine and the law-makers. If any of you want to get more involved in your chosen profession, I invite you to contact me so we can discuss how you can make a difference. I hope everyone has a wonderful season of holidays and more!
