<ul><li><p>8/10/2019 The Vision of Mobile Ad Hoc Networking</p><p> 1/4</p><p>Anytime,Anyplace,AnyhowMultimediaWirelessAccess:</p><p>TheVisionofMobileAdHocNetworking</p><p>Prof.GeorgeN.Aggelou, InstituteofTechnology,Athens,Greece,Director,G-Alpha</p><p>Telecomms,Athens,Greece</p><p>TutorialOverview:</p><p>Thepastdecadehasshownaphenomenalgrowthinwirelesscommunications.CellularsystemshavebeenstandardizedandPersonalCommunicationServices(PCS)andthe3rdgenerationradiotechnologyarebeingusedprovidingwide-bandservicestomobileusers.</p><p>Additionally,wirelessnetworkingisbeingusedmoreandmoreinbothfixedandmobileusagescenarios,whereashighqualitymultimedia(voice,videoanddata)servicesoverhigh-speedwirelesslocalareanetworks(LANs)arebecomingareality.WirelessLANs(e.g.HiperLAN2,IEEE802.11),beinginterconnectedtoafixednetwork,areofferingupto54Mbpsboth toresidentialand businessenvironmentswith high qualityofservice(QoS).Thedemandofthesemultimediaapplicationshasbeenlargelywitnessedsofarinfixednetworksbutaslifestyleisrapidlychanging,internet-likeapplicationsaremoreandmoreattractivetomobileusersaswell. </p><p>Inparallelwith(andseparatelyfrom)thesinglehopmodelfortodayscellular/wirelesscommunications,anothertypeofmodelbasedonradiotoradiomultihopping,hasbeen</p><p>evolving to serve a growingnumber of applicationswhich rely on a fast deployable,multihop,wirelessinfrastructure.Amultihopmobileradionetwork,alsocalledmobileadhoc network (MANET) is a self-organizing and rapidly deployable network in whichneither a wired backbone nor a centralized control exists. The network nodescommunicatewith oneanotherover scarcewirelesschannels inamulti-hop fashion.The ad hoc network is adaptable to the highly dynamic topology resulted from themobilityofnetworknodesandthechangingpropagationconditions. </p><p>MANETs are a new paradigm of wireless wearable devices enabling instantaneousperson-to-person, person-to-machine or machine-to-person communicationsimmediatelyandeasily.Possiblecommercialapplicationsincludebusinessassociates</p><p>sharinginformationduringameeting,studentsusinglaptopcomputerstoparticipateinan interactive lecture, and emergencydisaster reliefpersonnel coordinating efforts innatural disasters. In these applications, where a fixed backbone is not available, areadilydeployablewirelessnetworkisneeded.Mobileadhocnetworksarealsoagoodalternative in rural areas or third world countries where basic communicationinfrastructure isnotwell established.Another interestingapplicationofmobileadhocnetworks isubiquitouscomputing. Intelligentdevicesareconnectedwith one another</p></li><li><p>8/10/2019 The Vision of Mobile Ad Hoc Networking</p><p> 2/4</p><p>viawireless linksandareself-organizedin suchaway thatanewly joinednodecanrequestservicefromlocalserverswithoutanyhumanintervention. </p><p>Whendesigningmobileadhocnetworks,severalinterestinganddifficultproblemsarisedue to shared nature of the wireless medium, limited transmission power (range) of</p><p>wirelessdevices,nodemobility,andbatterylimitations.Thelimitedtransmissionrangeofwirelessnetwork interfaces coupledwith thehighly dynamic routing infrastructure,due to mobility, create a lot of concerns when addressing issues such as dynamicrouting,efficientchannelaccessandquality-of-service(QoS)support. </p><p>Thistutorialwilldescribefirstthe ideaofadhocnetworkingandscenarioswherethistechnologywillmake an impact.How the environmentofanadhoc network is verydifferentfromthewiredenvironment,andtheeffectthishasonthedesignandoperationofroutingprotocolsforadhocnetworkswillbeextensivelyexplained.Adescriptionofanumberofdifferentissuesrelatedtomediumaccesscontrol(MAC),routing,andQoSinmobile ad hoc networks, including the prominent protocols under consideration forstandardizationbytheIETF,willfollowup.</p><p>Finally, integration issues with wide area mobility models, such as Mobile-IP, andCellular systems, such as the GSM, will also be presented.
