What a fabulous weekend – Rock N’ Roll Weekend and Classic Car Show is finally here!

Happy BirthdayBecky Shaw ..... September 14

Topper Clemons ..... September 16

Many of the locals will tell you this is their favorite weekend. The atmosphere is festive, the crowds are “just right” and the fun is around every corner all weekend long. It’s a real testament to our hard working Ellicottville Chamber and all the merchants in the village. You’ll meet the nicest people while strolling around the village streets shopping, enjoying the live music, popping into a pub for a quick bite and bevie and looking at all those beautiful cars. This weekend will be a blast and a great way to kick off our famous fall season. Our friendly visitors love it here as much as we residents do. And why not? I firmly believe one of the main reasons

for this mutual affection is the collective attitude of the people who live here. We’re a fun, optimistic bunch with bright attitudes. Who wouldn’t want to be around folks like that? I find the interaction of old friends and new acquaintances very energizing, don’t you? And what a beautiful time and picturesque setting to relax, have some fun and enjoy the people, scenery, and wonderful events. So, dear readers – give me warm sweaters, a blazing fire (outdoors or in) and a nice glass of wine. Once again, I must say – living and working in Ellicottville is the best of all worlds! Have a rockin’ weekend! JZ

After announcing in early August that Kinley Corporation has been named new lead developer to take over the ambitious Bonaventure Square project on Rt. 417 in the Town of Allegany, St. Bonaventure University officials are confident they have found the right partner to get things rolling and hope to break ground this spring at the long vacant site of the former Castle Inn. Bonaventure Square, the much-anticipated hotel, retail, residential and entertainment complex will eventually fill up most of the 18-acre parcel, and locally based Kinley Corporation will be overseeing the project through to completion. Kinley Corporation is a family owned general contractor specializing in large and small scale commercial

and residential construction projects with headquarters in Allegany, N.Y. and a division in Florida. Kinley came on board with a fresh approach as lead developer and found that to make this complex project work; they needed to carefully restructure the original construction time frame into two separate phases without changing the fundamental design of the original project. “At this point, the project scope has not had any changes” said Jimmy Kinley, Operations Manager for Kinley Corp., “The biggest change for the new approach is that the apartments have been moved from Phase 1 to Phase 2”. Phase 1 of the project will include a new hotel, retail center, restaurant and family entertainment center. When asked what the estimated cost for Phase 1 would be Kinley said, “Right now the estimated

price tag for phase one is between $25-$30 million”. Phase 2 includes apartment housing and a multi-use athletic complex, but Kinley pointed out that “It is still under design and consideration for Phase 2. The previous site plan proposal has a Sports Facility. We are carefully weighing our options for Phase 2 until we know we have the best design of that property in order to accommodate the University and the community”. As far as what the total project cost would be, he said, “Phase 2 is yet to be finalized, but overall the project could potentially come out to approximately $65 million.” Completing both phases of the project could take a few years. “Phase 2 construction will depend on what we decide to go there so the timing depends on that decision. With the current layout of Phase 1, the construction could take anywhere from 18 months to 2 years”, Kinley said. Stakeholders in this project have been eagerly waiting for some time to actually see construction begin at the site. Kinley acknowledged that the construction start date has been a moving target in the past, but confirmed that his “goal is to get a shovel in the ground as soon as possible”. His best estimate to begin is early next spring, 2013 and adds, “we are doing everything we can to meet that target”.

Prominent historian Stanley Weintraub and a local man are teaming up to identify and interview area veterans who served in Korea between Thanksgiving and Christmas 1950. Phil Zimmer notes that this book will focus largely on the X Corps (Marines & Army) and the pullback from the Chosin Reservoir. Personal memories of Navy and Air Force support personnel also will be included. Weintraub plans to bring in personal recollections of those

involved in the miraculous withdrawal under pressure from the Chosin Reservoir. He is especially interested in the veterans’ thoughts of “getting home for Christmas” that had been promised earlier in the going by Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Zimmer will interview the local vets; similar to the research he did for Weintraub’s most recent book, “Final Victory,” which dealt with FDR’s 1944 presidential campaign. The local history buff notes that this

book will be the sixth in a series written by Weintraub on the topic of Christmastime during war. The latest is “Pearl Harbor Christmas: A World At War, December 1941” published in 2011. The series also includes “11 Days in December: Christmas at the Bulge, 1944” and “Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce.” The Korean War vets may contact Zimmer directly at 665-4034 or via email at [email protected].

Inside Business TrackThe Art House

Western New York now has a new addition to its already eclectic artistic community. “Our Art House,” located at 15 Main Street in Bemus Point New York, is a gallery featuring the works of regional artists in the area. The gallery is literally brand new to the area, as it has only been open about a month. The Art House is owned by partners Ann Janowsky and The Villager’s Publisher, Jeanine Zimmer. Janowsky said the idea for the gallery came about after Zimmer and herself purchased that part of the building, and were looking for something to do with it. Janowsky said that Zimmer, who is very familiar with the local art scene, got local artists involved in the gallery easily. While the gallery features many different types of arts, one of the most popular pieces

of artwork sold out of the gallery are those that are the product of Joan Comella, an artists from Cleveland who specializes in glass growing. Comella, who owns her own glass studio in Cleveland, began to experiment with glass growing over 25 years ago with her husband while on their honeymoon in Canada. Comella said that she has since devoted 15 years to the art, and is excited to see its popularity in the art world. In addition to glass artwork pieces, Comella also specializes in beads and jewelry. She said she is excited to be a part of the gallery, because it is a new and fresh idea and is taking off really well. “It hasn’t been open very long, but it’s really popular,” she said. “They’ve been asking me for more and more of my glass artwork every week –

and they’re only in their third week. It’s very promising.” Janowsky said that she is very excited with the way that business has gone so far. “Jeanine and I had no idea that we’d be so busy,” she said. “The reception so far has been amazing. It’s just been wonderful and very encouraging. We’re excited to continue and advance forward.” Just recently the gallery has acquired original pieces by renowned artist Yuroz from the private collection of Jay Monti and Tom O’Connor and originals by Philip Burke, who is famed for his Rolling Stone illustrations. The Art House is open from Thursday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call Janowsky or Zimmer at 716-386-1017.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — More than one and a half million families have positively changed their financial future through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU). Updated in summer 2012, the now nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Dave on DVD followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing. FPU will be held in Ellicottville at: Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church located at 6360 Route 242 East in Ellicottville. The classes will begin Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 7:00 PM. Contact Ron Swartz at (716)699-2265 for more information or to register. Since its inception in 1994 FPU has helped more than 1.5 million families positively change their financial future. Through common-sense

principles and small-group accountability, FPU gives people the tools they need to change their behavior and succeed financially. On average families who complete FPU pay off $5,300 and save $2,700 in the first 90 days. Following the class nearly 94 percent of those families budget regularly. “FPU will not only transform the way you handle money, but also your marriage and other areas of your life,” says Ramsey. “This isn’t a boring financial class. We make learning about money fun and easy to understand so people in every situation can benefit from the information.” Ramsey knows first-hand the pain that financial stress can cause. After creating a net worth of more than a million dollars by age 26, he quickly lost it all. Since then Ramsey has helped families and individuals across the country learn how to get control of their finances and avoid debt so they don’t have to experience the same pain he did. FPU lessons also include guest speakers Rachel Cruze, speaker and daughter of Dave Ramsey;

Jon Acuff, author of Wall Street Journal best seller Quitter and popular blog Stuff Christians Like; and Chris Hogan, counselor and speaker for the Dave Ramsey organization. The revised FPU will be offered through churches and community centers. After purchasing a membership each participant receives a workbook, Dave Ramsey’s Complete Guide to Money, an envelope system and an audio CD library. Participants will also have access to budgeting forms and MP3s of all the lessons. For more information or to purchase a membership, go to www.daveramsey.com. About Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. It’s hard to remember a time before the Tasty Twirl existed in Allegany. Other once familiar landmarks no longer dot the landscape along Route 417. The Castle Inn and Paul’s Steakhouse may be gone, but the Tasty Twirl remains, a family-owned business operated by Donald and Linda Blinn. The restaurant has been in the family since 1960, when it was purchased by Donald Blinn’s parents, Bob and Pauline Blinn. Donald and Linda Blinn starting working there in 1972, and took over the operations in 1999. Bathrooms were added in 1992, and an outdoor patio in 1999. The location and many of the menu items have not changed over the years. The ever-popular Texas hots are the top sellers, “averaging probably about 40,000 a year since 1960.” Or you can order a “super burger,” where the

meat is chopped up loose and ready to heat. “My dad always wanted something to put out fast; he didn’t want to fool around with patties.” Soups get warmed up as the fall weather chills. Chili and vegetables are winter favorites. The onion rings and chips are nice and hot. And of course, don’t forget the ice cream, both hard and soft. Some items were on the menu even before the Blinn family took over. And a few are tough to find in restaurants. Donald Blinn notes, “Where else can you get a peanut fluff sundae? Most people have never heard of them.” Another example is their Boston milkshake, which contains any kind of combination of ingredients you want. Tasty Twirl used to be called Tasty Freeze, a small building where people sat in their cars to eat. The Blinns added indoor seating in 1972. “We’ve made it through hard times.” And now, they are

hoping to take life a bit easier. The business has long been open year round, but that’s going to change. “We’ll be closing in January, February, and March (of 2013) - we’re going to try that.” The work is constant at the restaurant, where Donald can often be found before the sun rises, even on Sundays, when they are closed. Much of the work is behind the scenes, like maintaining the soft ice cream and soda machines. Donald and Linda Blinn appreciate the work put in by their employees, many of whom are local high school students. Five were in the same class at Allegany-Limestone. “On average they are great people and great workers. To anyone who says young people are not willing to work hard, I say baloney. I’ve had more complements in the last two years on my help, because I’ve got good young people, and that’s a good thing to hear.” Hours at Tasty Twirl vary with the season, staying open as late 10 p.m. in the summer, but closing at 7 p.m. during winter. Business has been especially good this year, helped by the great spring and summer weather. “We’ve been overwhelmed (this year)…we have a good system. After 52 years, we ought to have it down pat.” How long will the Donald and Linda Blinn run the Tasty Twirl? Donald notes, “I’m not going to give this place away. So I might be here another twenty years.”

Virus and bacteria make themselves present during season changes, fall-winter more than any other. You can keep your immune system and your family’s strong by supplying the body with a powerful and safe defense through the entire season. The first step to consider, is to do an internal cleanse to help the body get rid of toxins built up during summer. This can be done in a very simple way following a two week cleanse program like Tiao He Cleanse or Cleanse Start, then followed by a basic maintenance program for the immune system in the next following weeks. Viruses or bacteria have sometimes the tendency to congest the upper respiratory system and the ears. The lymphatic system can get congested as well. According to the Herballure, Inc. data and research, the lymphatic system is

responsible for maintaining the fluids flowing cleanly through the tissues and preventing these fluids from stagnating. Lymph fluid circulates through the body collecting cellular waste generated as a by-product of metabolism, along with toxins and debris from infections. The formula Lymphatic drainage is a liquid formula that helps with the flow of the lymph fluid, the retention of fluids and congestion. It is soothing to the ears and ear infections as well. Silver Shield and Elderberry D3fense are two powerful formulas for the immune system. Silver Shield, one of my favorite remedies, is a silver sol technology solution that has amazing antiviral and antibacterial properties. Silver Shield has a wide spectrum of action. A study out of Brigham Young University (BYU) testing the effectiveness of silver preparations on a wide range of microbes found that silver was a broad spectrum antimicrobial able to kill a large variety of pathogens. In fact, according to Dr. Gordon Pedersen, none of the pathogens tested survived silver exposure. In another note from Dr. Pedersen, he explains that Silver Sol resonates at a frequency that can actually suppress and contain viral infections by interfering with the duplication and replication of viral infections. Silver Shield comes in a liquid and gel form. When the gel is used on the hands it may work as an antibacterial for as long as 4.5 hrs. Elderberry has a large history of scientific research. During the 1980’s Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu and Dr. Jean

Linderman isolated two active constituents from elderberry. Both of these constituents proved effective in fighting strains of influenza by rendering the viruses unable to replicate. After conducting a double blind, clinical trial in which patients infected with the influenza virus were given either an extract of elderberry or a placebo, 75 percent of the patients who received the elderberry extract were much improved within 48 hours. After 72 hours, 90 percent were completely well. Elderberry D3fense is an improved formula that includes vitamin D to provide an even stronger defense for the body. It contains elderberry fruit, royal jelly and Echinacea. Royal jelly is a super food fed by nurse bees to produce a queen. It is rich in B-complex vitamins and contains 18 amino acids and several minerals. Solstic Immune is a powdered drink with citrus refreshing flavor that provides immune system boost in a convenient drink stick packet. Its key ingredients are elderberry fruit extract, Echinacea purpurea and vitamin D3, all of which have been shown to support the immune system. Solstic Immune also contains arabinogalactan and beta glucans, which according to researchers they stimulate and protect the cells from the invaders; Panax ginseng, another promoter of cell protection; vitamin C, long known for its role in maintaining a healthy immune system; zinc, blueberry, raspberry and cranberry fruits, loaded with antioxidants. People who exercise or are on the go all the time can benefit enormously from this drink.

“Healthcare Reform…What It Is, and What Does It Mean to Your Business?” That’s the subject of a program taking place at the Bartlett Country Club in Olean on Tuesday, September 18th, at 7:30 a.m. Marc Voyvodich will be the featured speaker. He is an expert in the healthcare industry, and has worked as a consultant for the Upper Allegheny Health System, which includes Olean

General Hospital and the Bradford Regional Medical Center. Voyvodich has worked for more than three decades with doctors, hospitals, health insurance companies, and universities to improve the quality of care they have been providing, as well as enhancing their efficiency and productivity. He is the founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Stroudwater Associates, a national consulting firm. The company provides assistance with mergers and acquisitions, rural health care, and financial advisory services. Voyvodich helped pull the two local hospitals together, helping them create a plan for moving ahead. He’s been asked to talk about health care reform. Voyvodich says he intends to put what’s going on today within the context of where we’ve been going for the last sixty or seventy years in this country in terms of health care reform. “This is just another step in a long series of steps since the end of World War II.” When put in that context, it makes a bit more sense, according to Voyvodich. Voyvodich plans on hitting some of the highlights of the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” what is provoking

it and what it requires. He plans to discuss the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in July, and what might or might not happen, depending on the outcome of the presidential election. “I’ll try to move up beyond the political fray, and what is the broad trajectory of health care in the United States.” He said he will be glad to take questions. Voyvodich says the individual mandate is something that must ultimately be addressed if we are going to have health insurance of any kind. “You’ve got to have people paying in to cover the risk, not just cover bills.” He says controlling the cost of health care is critically important. “Close to twenty percent of the economy is represented in health care expenditures in this country right now. That’s a breathtaking number. Left to its current trajectory, that (number) will be up in the mid-twenties and eventually up into the thirties.” Those wishing to attend the health care program should make reservations by calling 716-375-6170, or e-mail [email protected]. A light breakfast will be served, beginning at 7 a.m. The Bartlett Country Club is located at 32 Euclid Avenue in Olean.

When we say that the absolute best place in the County to watch the sun make its descent over the hills is in front of our Historic American Chestnut log cabin, we’re not exaggerating. If it’s clear, before the sun slips behind the hills you can see hills that are more than 40 miles away! The long distance western view, framed by graceful trees and shrubs, is glorious indeed.

Beyond The Boardroom

Leo McCarthy

Municipal Planning Board meetings can be anything but exciting. Not to say that what goes on there isn’t important - just that a sometimes protracted discussion about building codes and regulations can be a bit dry for us non-technical types. Thank goodness there are those amongst you who have the right combination of intelligence and patience, and are willing to serve on one of the local Planning Boards. For everyone else, a good way to find out quickly what’s going on at Planning Board meetings without actually going to one is to read all about it in the Villager. As with Planning Board members, Planning Board reporters also have the patience of Job, and should be commended for what they do. Despite my inability to pay attention at technical meetings, there was something that got my attention in the summary article of the July Town Planning Board meeting, which appeared in last week’s Villager. One of the issues covered was the review and subsequent approval of the Tim Horton’s site plan, which is being built on the site of the old highway barns on 219. The town had expressed concerns that the drive-through be adequately designed so cars don’t stack up and protrude out onto 219 and cause a traffic safety issue. so they can let the thousands of visitors to the area know what the County has to offer. “We need a location to showcase the entire county to the hundreds of thousands who visit the area,” said Brian McFadden, executive director of the Ellicottville Area Chamber of Commerce. McFadden thinks the Ellicottville location can provide that needed showcase. He said not only is Ellicottville the center of the county, but, he added, 6,500 cars pass through it daily. In addition,

McFadden said, Ellicottville is the gateway to a potential 10.5 million visitors from Ontario and Western New York. He believes tourism needs promoting, and thinks the soon-to-be-vacant building can provide the chance to do so. After all, he said, tourism is a $186 million industry, with 14 percent of the county population employed either directly or indirectly. Because of that, Ellicottville chamber officials saw an opportunity with Kwik-Fill becoming available and proposed their idea to county leaders, getting support from Olean and Salamanca chamber of commerce officials with the endeavor. According to the plan, a board

of directors would oversee the operation of the visitors’ center, which could open after the Kwik-Fill becomes vacant later this year. Although some details remain, the center would have literature about locations throughout the county where visitors may want to stop. According to the plan, the visitors’ center would be open seven days a week and have washrooms visitors could frequent while learning about what Cattaraugus County has to offer. Chamber leaders are awaiting a further meeting with county officials regarding whether their plan will be supported so locations throughout the area can be showcased to the thousands visiting here.

with entries from picturesque communities across the country including nearby Chautauqua, as well as towns farther afield such as Kennebunkport, Maine, Saratoga, Florida, Durango, Colorado and many more. Broken down into one of two categories – small communities with a population under 10,000 and large communities with a population over 10,000 – each entry will compete with other nominees in one of six geographic regions: Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, Northwest and Southwest.

Entered as a small community, Ellicottville’s submission by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce included images of 20 buildings from within the Village of Ellicottville, including the playful façade of the bright and cheerful Purple Doorknob on Monroe. The deadline for entries is this Friday, September 14, at which point the judges will painstakingly pour through the candidates and narrow down the field to five large and five small places from each of the six regions for a total of 60 finalists in the competition. Those 60 finalists will be announced on September 20, and the Paint Quality Institute will promote them in regional publicity campaigns. In the final round of review, a panel of judges representing

major media outlets - including HGTV - will select one small and one large community from each of the six regions as the ultimate 12 “Prettiest Painted Places in America.” The 12 winners will be revealed on October 10 and will be featured in an extensive national publicity campaign by the Paint Quality Institute. To keep track of the competition, visit the Paint Quality Institute’s web site at http://blog.paintquality.com/. Or to learn about Ellicottville’s entry into the competition, contact the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce’s Brian McFadden at [email protected] or 699-5046. In the meantime, take pride in knowing that – no matter the results – Ellicottville is our pretty little piece of America.

result of the fee to be vacant buildings. As of now we do not know what the future brings with this matter.

That caused board members to say they will address issues. Officials said the garbage bill would not begin until June, giving official’s time to set policy. A public hearing will be held prior to putting the fee in place.“We will make sure everybody gets treated fairly,” said Coolidge.

In other news, locations for fall festival plans will be discussed during a Monday special events committee meeting so the board can approve them prior to the event.Public hearings were also set for Oct. 15 for local laws regarding water regulations and best purchasing policies for village contracts.

Commentary:

Beyond The BoardroomPlanning For A Proper Drive-Through Window

Tim Horton’s design professionals offered a solution that works for all parties and it was approved. A happy ending indeed, but it left me thinking – drive-through windows are hugely popular these days and there must be

volumes written on how to design them to be safe and convenient. I don’t know why I found this interesting, but I put on my research cap and started digging. Did you know that some of the local Tim Horton’s get 300 plus cars per hour cycling through their drive-through windows on busy weekends? I know that one because three of my children have worked there over the years, and I’ve heard all about how intense it was working at the window and always staying polite, professional and accurate with that never ending stream of caffeine deficient customers. Horton’s employees take a lot of pride in speedy and accurate service and often compete with other locations to see who has the shortest wait times. Despite the long lines of cars we’ve all seen at Tim Horton’s, they seem to have figured out the magic formula for delivering a quality product quickly, which keeps people coming back. I’m sure the same goes for other fast food restaurants, but it seems Tim Horton’s has the most volume out of them all and likewise, I suspect, a keen interest in continuously improving the drive-through experience. Moving past the Tim Horton’s project, I was able to uncover a few other semi interesting industry guidelines for designing a proper drive-through. Did you know that most new construction buildings with a drive-through are positioned on the left side of the building lot, with the drive-through window on the left side of the building also? If you think about the ones you see around here – they are mostly on the left. They do this to try and keep the bulk of the parking lot, and cars stacked up in the drive-through queue to the right side and far enough away to not interfere with exiting drive-through traffic and walk-in customers. Reading further, I found that It’s apparently not a good idea to have high curbs or elaborate plantings on the edges of drive-

through lanes. Studies have found that customers like to be able to escape from the line if need be, not to mention the fact that some people have trouble driving in a defined lane and scrap or ride up on the curbs. If you plan to have a large amount of people using the drive-through you need to build a multi lane drive-through with an equal number of ordering stations. Speaking of ordering stations, many building codes state that ordering station speakers should not go above a certain decibel so as not to bother the neighbors. Ordering station touch screens, where customers place an order for themselves, are cool - but not recommended because people of differing touch screen dexterity can seriously slow down the line. Where to place the drive-through queue, or stacking lane for waiting cars is the biggest challenge for designers. It needs to be long enough to contain peak rush hour volume without having vehicles out in the road or interfering with onsite parking, and yet not stick out like a sore thumb and detract from the curb appeal of the building. Ideally, the stacking lane should never traverse across the front of the building – that’s seems to be a big no-no, although some site conditions offer no other choice and they have to do it that way. Another thing to consider is the lane can’t be anywhere near an inhabited building because of the exhaust fumes from all those idling cars. Well, there you have it. Hopefully, you found my informative and slightly amusing assessment of a not so amusing process interesting enough to read this far, and will never again feel uninformed while patiently waiting in a drive-through line. Leo McCarthy is the Sardinia Town Historian. He will be taking an in depth look at some of the issues discussed during town and village board meetings. Comments: [email protected]

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Good luck!

To all our guests at the Argentine Event on Sat. Sept. 8 and those who donated to the Food Bank but were unable to attend. The response was wonderful and we are able to send them a total of $1700.00 from what, we hope, will become an annual event. We would like to tell you about the Argentine wines we featured. The white wine is Catena Padrillos Torrontes which is $10.99, and the red wine is Tintonegro Malbec which sells for $9.99. Our guests seemed to really appreciate both of these wines and they are avail-able at the store. E-Ville Spirits will be celebrating our 9th anniversary in December and we want to thank you for your support. It has been a wonder-ful experience for all of us at the store: Shannon, Judith, Bob, Jamie, and Mary Lou. We look forward to many more years of serving you at E-Ville Spirits and Wines. --Shannon Carscallen, E’Ville Spirits

A few years ago everyone dreamed of having a little log cabin in the woods. A place apart, on a remote mountainside, tucked into the woods, far away from civilization. Well, that was then and this is now. How about a log cabin with four bedrooms, internet, high-def TV, four fireplaces, a deck, a hot tub, and a gourmet kitchen. Not way off in the woods, but just off Holiday Valley Drive; this home is indeed nestled in the trees and originally known as the “Eagles Nest”. In summer the trees drape over

the deck, and provide a cool breeze. In the winter when the trees have shed their leaves, the panoramic view of Holiday Valley ski area opens up. The main floor features pine walls, floors, and a cathedral ceiling with massive exposed beams. A great stone wood-burning fireplace is the main feature in the living room. The beautiful woodwork extends into the kitchen with its granite counter tops and open layout. The gas stove is fitted into a notch in the back of the fireplace. Next to the kitchen, the dining room has it own little alcove with a fireplace. Just off the kitchen is the master suite. The huge master bedroom has

a fireplace and an equally grand bathroom with a whirlpool tub. There is another full bath on the main floor as well. Upstairs are three more bedrooms and a full bath. Downstairs the family room has yet another fireplace and around the corner room for a pool table and other games. Through the sliding glass doors is the ground level deck with a hot tub. Throughout home is well appointed with handsome rough wood furniture that perfectly matches the look of this 2900 square foot “cabin.” The furniture is included with the house. It’s a turn-key cabin in the woods that combines rustic simplicity and upscale elegance. Even better, it is only a short hop to the slopes at Holiday Valley and a minute to downtown Ellicottville. Architectural Spotlight of EllicottvilleThe New Sundance Chalet Development ~ One of E’Ville’s Best Kept Secrets

Day Trippin’ - Light The Night Walk Sundance is one of Ellicottville’s best-kept secrets. This high-end development is located just two miles from the heart of Ellicottville and slopes of Holiday Valley & Holimont. And there is no better time to check out this new development than this weekend, as they will be hosting an open house from 12-6pm both Saturday and Sunday, with Hors D’oeuvres and Refreshments. (From Mill Street, by the Wingate Hotel, go straight out for 1.5 miles on Sugartown Road, then left on Sommerville Valley approximately .5 miles to arrive at Sundance.) Each lot is approximately 5 acres and pricing starts at $49,900. There are 18 lots available. Two have been developed. The lots feature underground utilities and a town maintained paved road with a quiet Cul-de-sac. When you approach the development; there is a babbling stream cascading across the front of it. The lots are positioned to run from the ridgeline out across Sundance Road to Sommerville Valley Road. The development was designed so no chalet would be built in front of another, maximizing privacy and

There are views – and then there are VIEWS. From this hill top setting on Witch Hollow Road, you’ll see an unencumbered vista like few other places in Cattaraugus County. The beauty can best be seen from the deck, the living room and kitchen…where you would spend most of your time in awe. But wait – there’s more! There’s a studio apartment above the two car garage. Perfect for the unexpected guests or extended family members who want some privacy.

Two levels of living provide enough space for living and entertaining. The lower level features a family room with stone fireplace, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchenette. Head up the custom-built stairway to the main level – with the great room, fully-equipped kitchen, two more bedrooms and bathroom. There’s plenty of storage space, too. One closet features cubbies and racks designed for skiers.

views. The owner’s land below Sommerville Valley is designated as “green space” to allow for a scenic pond and walking trails. There is a dedication for 10+ acres to be set aside with a large stocked reflection pond, dock and gazebo; guaranteeing unlimited luxury to each owner. There are literally miles of cross-country and snow shoeing trails being cleared and the lots back up to the Cattaraugus County snowmobile trail. The model home was built by Burke Contracting, L.L.C. and features incredible custom views. This 4 bedroom; 2 full bath home is accented with two full walk-in closets, beautiful exposed aggregate concrete countertops and custom Black Walnut furniture (built by Wayne Stein and Brett Hart). There is custom trim and header pieces (milled by Jerry Musall) and custom woodwork throughout. The top level has a black walnut raised panel kitchen with custom-built cabinets (built by Brian Puvel.) Black Walnut wainscoting surrounds the Great Room. The Great Room features a massive wood burning stone fireplace that has the capacity to heat the entire home.

There is a huge deck out the front with a piped-in gas grill and Jacuzzi. A huge stone chimney compliments the front roofline. Custom black walnut ski lockers are conveniently located in the entrance. The Master Bedroom features a beautiful custom-tiled bathroom and shower. The doors are custom-built solid white oak and the floors are wide plank – white oak. The Great Room in the lower level has an additional massive fireplace. The floor has radiant heat with Italian tile throughout. It is a complete space with it’s own oak kitchen and features a cherry wainscoting and trim throughout. The entrances and patios are all custom designed with uni-lock Stonehenge style. Finally, there is a full two-car garage with 10-foot ceilings and a full apartment above with an open concept breakfast bar and stone propane fireplace. Builder, Pat Burke himself, invites you to come take a tour this weekend. He will be on hand to answer any of your questions. He notes, you may feel free to come visit Sundance at you leisure at anytime to enjoy the natural beauty and abundant

wildlife in this gem located just outside the Village. For a private tour, stop by the open house this weekend,
