The detachable quad chair promises to cut the ride time to the top of the mountain in half. The chair detaches from the cable and slows down considerably during loading and unloading. This makes the chair safer for loading children and less experienced skiers. When safely loaded the chair is re-connected to the cable for a speedy ride up the slope. Other improvements are being made elsewhere on the mountain, including new features being added to the terrain park. The new areas in the park will take inspiration from the popular Dinosaur Box from last year. NEW CHALET AT HOLIDAY VALLEY “Definitely yes!” Is how Jane Eshbaugh of Holiday Valley responds when asked the innocent question, “Will there be anything new at Holiday Valley this ski season.” She’s referring to the new main chalet currently under construction. “It was time for the old clubhouse to retire,” says Ms. Eshbaugh. With the Tannenbaum, and Yodeler lodges being relativity newer, the old lodge was rather dated. The new lodge will feature a “soaring 32 foot cathedral ceiling, wooden beams and a 2 story chimney with fireplaces on both floors.” Jane says the new lodge will have “a better flow, with a more skier friendly placement of services.” The 12 million dollar lodge is scheduled to open December 15, and the mountain itself is expected to open, weather permitting, on the day after Thanksgiving. Weather played a major roll in last year’s season, and underscored the need for good snowmaking. What a spectacular event – every single aspect of the weekend fell together perfectly, which is a testament to the expertise our local Chamber and merchants continually demonstrate. Everyone realizes the economic importance this annual celebration of fall brings to our restaurants, pubs and retail establishments. What isn’t as apparent is the goodwill and better relationships the event generates. Ellicottville has firmly established itself as a quaint and unique experience; truly a four-season resort community. Western New Yorkers and our dear friends north of the border have known this for some time. And now

we see visitors from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and parts further discovering what we have to offer – good times, great people and beautiful scenery. And now we get a little breather before we settle in to what we do best around here – taking care of our seasonal residents and visitors who enjoy falling snow flakes a little more than falling leaves. What a fabulous way to say good-bye to this awesome autumn we’ve had… So, dear readers, break out the warm clothes, stay busy and enjoy the post-Fall Fest season. Until next week… JZ

HoliMont Fall Fest Update

Mr. & Mrs. Brad Nickoli - Married September 29th 2012

A HoliMont Fall Fest Recap

Putting the Fall Fest weekend into words is a difficult task. The event seems to bring in more people every single year, regardless of the economy, the price of gas, or the weather forecast. Early October in Ellicottville turns this quaint little village into a haven for people looking to kick off the upcoming ski season in style. Once Fall Fest hits, every skier and snowboarder in the area knows that it is time to start tuning up his or her equipment. Fall Fest signifies a time to get winter chalets ready for the season, to drop off skis and boards at one of the great ski shops in the area for tuning, and to meet up with the people who will soon become mainstays in your life…your winter skiing

friends. On Saturday, October 6th HoliMont held its annual meeting for the membership. Members came to the HoliMont Chalet from Cleveland, Erie, Buffalo, and of course our friends from Canada were down in droves. Following a very productive meeting where HoliMont President Peter Ashmore, Treasurer Jim Doro, and General Manager Dave Riley updated the membership on everything that took place over the off season; a list that included everything from replacing water lines for snowmaking, to building two separate storage facilities on the property, to thanking volunteer members’ whose term on the Board of Directors had come to an end.

Oh yes, and there was that little project called a high-speed detachable quad chairlift that was put up over the course of the summer. Those in attendance were elated with the progress the Club has made. Speaking of the new lift, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony that took place at 12:00pm following the meeting. A good number of people where there standing in line, waiting to get a small sample of what they had to look forward to this season. The lift ran from noon until 4:00pm and got pretty consistent traffic throughout the day. If you were in the area that day you know that we were treated to some exceptionally nice weather. All in all it was a picturesque day in Ellicottville.

Amanda Klier and Brad Nickoli exchanged their Wedding vows on Saturday, September 29, 2012 in a serene mountain top ceremony at Holiday Valley Ski Resort. Joined by over 130 family members and friends, some who traveled as far as Portland, Oregon. Everyone enjoyed a scenic ride up the Mardi Gras chair lift and a short walk to the top of Morning Star run, where the wedding ceremony took place. After the beautiful ceremony with personalized wedding vows, the bridal party and guests made their way back down and celebrated at the Ellicottville Depot. As night fell, Amanda & Brad with their guests set off more than 80 glowing celebration lanterns into the night sky. Brad & Amanda are both natives of Toledo, OH who love skiing at Holiday Valley and enjoying weekends at their family’s home here in Ellicottville. After their honeymoon in Jamaica, the couple will reside in Toledo, OH.

Congrats Chamber We have just completed another wonderful weekend in Ellicottville. We have been non-residents for some 28 years, raising our family and skiing at Holimont. This has to be the “BEST” Fall Festival yet. Despite some inclement weather, the merchants and tent vendors did a fabulous job of hospitality and welcoming all. I recently read an great article on Ellicottville in the Toronto Sun and 16 of their other newspapers outlining all that Ellicottville has to offer and more. A big CONGRATULATIONS to the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce for this valuable and priceless coverage. It will reach millions of folks. John Skirving - Burlington Ontario Canada

Dal-Tile is the largest manufacturer of ceramic tile and natural stone profucts across North America with over 250 locations nationwide. On Thursday, they announced their 174 employee plant in Olean will close. Senator Young: “This outcome is very disappointing and heartbreaking. All levels of government worked together to put forward an aggressive, lucrative package to keep DalTile here, going above and beyond the state’s usual economic development incentives. In the end, the severe downturn in the national economy was too much to overcome. Product sales are way down and the facility had been running at 40 to 50% capacity. Unfortunately, despite the

assistance offered, it would have cost the company $10 million more in capital and operations to stay in Olean than to stay in Gettysburg. I have already been in contact with the Department of Labor and they have readied their Rapid Response Services team to come to Olean and help the workers with new job placements, unemployment insurance and additional job training. Also, I will continue to work with Empire State Development, the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency and local officials to find a new business to take over the DalTile facility and bring good jobs back to Olean.” Assemblyman Giglio: “I’m very disappointed that the DalTile facility in Olean will be closed. The downturn in the economy forced the company to

make a very difficult decision. I believe that Senator Young and I, Empire State Development, the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency,Cattaraugus County Economic Development, the City of Olean and many others worked diligently with DalTile officials in packaging various State and local incentives to encourage the company to reconsider its decision. Unfortunately, the company felt that it was unable to make the necessary investments in the Olean facility to keep it operational. I pledge my assistance to the affected employees with unemployment, training, continuing education and job placements. I’m hopeful that the parties are able to work together in recruiting a new business to the facility and the community.”

On Sunday, October 14, at 1:00 pm rehearsals for the Community Christmas Cantata will begin. The choir will meet at the United Church on 53 Elizabeth Street in Ellicottville,

Cantata Rehearsals BeginEllicottville’s Christmas Cantata Rehearsals Starting On Sunday

for eight Sundays leading up to the concert at 3:00 on December 16th, 2012. All 90-minute sessions will begin at 1:00 except October 21, which will be at 7:00 pm. Also,

no rehearsal will be scheduled for Sunday, November 25th, during Thanksgiving break. It is the hope of the director, Annette Ieda, that each choir member will be able to attend at least 6 of the 8 rehearsals. Practice DCs and scores will be available to singers to take home. Mrs. Ieda is hoping for at least 40 people to join the choir. Her husband, concert pianist James Ieda, will be the accompanist. This year’s Cantata is a newly written work by Larry Shackley entitled, “A Blest Messiah Born.” Mrs. Ieda stated “Since the work includes solos, SATB ensembles, instrumental parts, and even a song for ‘children’s voices,’ it will have appeal for singers of all ages.” All area musicians are encouraged to join this “community project.”

The Community Christmas Cantata will begin Sunday, October 14 at 1:00 pm at the United Church.

call of a fire at the Mansfield Highway Department barn on

Ellicottville-Maples Road. When the firefighters arrived, “the fire had rapidly erupted throughout the roof of the building. This resulted in a total loss of the building and the equipment inside.” Eric Pearl, Chief of the Mansfield Fire Department continued to say, “Equipment included two plow trucks, a brand new loader, roller, grader, and pick up truck.“ No injuries were reported. However, it took over 100 firefighters, 11 volunteer fire companies, 13 tankers, and approximately 3.5 hours to put this massive fire out. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, which as of this point is undetermined.

were given by Hobie Hall, of Ellicottville; Diana Brodie, of Salamanca; Linda Wilbur, of Little Valley; and Robert Hall, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Work will continue throughout

the year to repair the years of damage on the monuments and markers of the cemetery. The cemetery will be much brighter and we have the contributors to thank for it.

Jolly Old St. Nick made an early visit to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office to meet with the Santa Sheriff’s Program Director Deputy Brian Keis to discuss the growing need for area families in the 2012 giving season. He was pleased to find that efforts have been ongoing this year with monthly raffle baskets and that letters will be going out to area businesses seeking local support through monetary donations. These donations will help the program purchase gifts for families in the community. The Santa Sheriff’s Program modeled after a similar initiative in Texas, began in 2004 and has been steadily growing. Partnering agencies and schools raise funds and refer less fortunate Cattaraugus County families to the program. Gifts are purchased at area businesses. Youth and volunteers from

Santa Sheriff’s ProgramKicking Off Ninth Year Of Giving

area schools and other county agencies wrap the gifts and package them for delivery. In 2004, the goal had been to serve five families; the program grew to 26 families in 2010 and 2011 providing a total of 117 men, women and children. These families were provided gifts, as well as a complete Christmas dinner, along with dry goods donated through the efforts of the staff and students at the Salamanca Middle School. The program hopes to raise the funds to provide Christmas to 40 families this year. As in the past years, the Sheriff’s Office has also pledged funding to the program through a donation from the Employees’ Association and the Supervisor Units, as well as receiving donations from the CSEA Supervisory Unit. Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Keis, Program Director, sees the Santa Sheriff’s

Program as, “a way for us to give back to the community”. Fundraising efforts continue to grow each year adding new partners. While the program is designed to provide Christmas gifts for area families, it also offers participants lessons in cooperation, volunteering and caring for others. This year the program is looking to raise nearly $10,000 so that the needs of area families can be met. Individuals interested in donating to this project may contact Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb at 938-9191 ext. 2247 or Deputy Brian Keis at 938-9191 ext. 2899. Contributions can be made payable to the CCSO Santa Sheriff’s Fund, c/o Deputy Brian Keis, Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, 301 Court Street, Little Valley, New York 14755. Together let’s make a families Christmas memorable.

This Christmas wonderland begins on Friday, November 23rd. The Village of Ellicottville, a Norman Rockwell painting in the making, will be the background for beautiful strolling choirs harmonizing all our favorite Christmas carols. The smell of hot chocolate, hot apple cider and the decorated windows in this historic 19th century village will bring back thoughts of a Christmas past. As the daylight comes to an end a spectacle unlike any other will appear as the village of Ellicottville comes to life in white Christmas lights and the three story tall Christmas tree is lit up. Throughout the event, activities will include Christmas carolers, reindeer, hot-chocolate,cookie decorating, horse and wagon rides as well as Fire Truck rides with Santa.

The only bad thing about Fall is it doesn’t last long enough. The leaves are slipping from the trees, and the weather is turning colder. Soon bare trees will coated with the first snow. But that points out the best thing about Fall: it turns into Winter. And we all know what Winter means around here. So what could be better to have in snow country than a beautiful

home right across from Holi-Mont? The bank of windows in the living room commands a view of the slopes. The view inside is terrific as well. Hand-some hardwood floors and cabinets abound throughout. In the living room a river stone fireplace rises to the cathedral ceiling. The sleek kitchen has the same great cabinets, and stone tile flooring and walls. The large breakfast bar is two sided to feed a crowd. It also functions as a pass through to

the large dining room. Off the kitchen is a wrap around deck with a hot tub. Two bedrooms and a full bath are on this floor. Upstairs the large master bedroom is like a hotel suite, with a reading corner, and a stone tile lined shower. The skylights flood the room with soft natural light. The ground floor features a separate apart-ment with a kitchenette, sleep-ing area and bath. The me-chanical / workroom is just off the two car garage. Imagine waking up to a view of HoliMont, grabbing your skis and being on the slopes in just a couple of minutes. Not only that downtown Elli-cottville is just a little further away. It’s enough to make you look forward to Winter. For more information about this home contact Cathleen Pritchard, licensed broker at ERA Vacation Properties, 716-983-4234.

Up Close & PersonalShannon Nixon; Shannon Kids Series Production

BY sharon turano

To Shannon Nixon, laughter is the best medicine. She has found a way to put that philosophy, along with her theatrical talents, to work to benefit youth in need of money for their own medicine. A theatrical producer in Jamestown, she has founded a theater season, “Shannon’s Kids Series,” the proceeds from which will benefit children undergoing medical treatment. The first show, “Classic Radio,” will be held at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 at the Spire Theater in Jamestown to benefit 15-year-old cancer patient Alii Makuch. In January, a second show for Elisha Kulpa, diagnosed with Cystic Fibroses and Spastic Diplegia, who is awaiting a double lung transplant, will be held, and a third show will be done in March to benefit 4-year-old Rosie Thrasher-Miller, awaiting a kidney. Each show will have a vintage/vaudeville feel and incorporate radio from its golden era. The November show will feature “Baby Snooks” episodes created by the writers of “I Love Lucy,” along with an Andrews Sisters Trio, a barbershop quartet and guest appearances from those emulating Etta James, Frank Sinatra and others. Ms. Nixon said all of the shows will be unique, while all

offer music and comedy.“To me, there is nothing more entertaining than to laugh till your sides hurt,” she said, adding laughter is the best medicine. She hopes the laughter in the shows does not only help the crowds coming to see them, but also provides medicine for the youth benefitting from them. One youth already has been helped by her efforts. Ms. Nixon said she produced her first show at 17-years-old and that work now benifts children like 9-year-old quadruple transplant patient Ryan Samuelson, who was an intermission guest on stage, where he met his kidney donor. “The crowd just roared with applause when he reached out to hug this man, a stranger, who gave a part of himself to help this little boy,” she said. “Everyone was crying, the audience, the performers and I couldn’t even get through my next number,” she recalled. Ms Nixon remembers wondering how she could stop producing such benefits.“This is the best feeling in the world,” she said about raising funds for the youth. “It’s a ton of work; it’s really hard and stressful, but knowing I’m able to do something, even if it’s just a little, is immensely rewarding,” she said, adding “helping children is what I feel

very led to do.” She said while she enjoys youth, she recognizes those who have to grow up fast because of health ailments or tough situations. “They’re brave souls, and I try to be on their level and connect and really communicate with them,” she said, adding, “when you get to know these kids, you want to do anything you can to help them. Since she has a connection with the performing arts, she decided to use it to help. “Classic Radio” is co-presented by Shannon’s Kids Series and Big Time Productions. She is working on it with Angelo and Ylsa Giuffre, Katie Trank, Kim Malarkey, Philip Petscher, Josh McCord. Those interested in helping the youth, along with laughing until their sides hurt, can do so at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Spire Theater on Third Street. Presale tickets are $10 at the Bemus Point United Methodist church and Labyrinth Press Co. and $12 at the door. For more information, call 708-8879 or visit www.shannonskids.org. Others wanting to help who can’t make the performance are asked to take returnable cans and bottles to Southside Redemption Center on Foote Avenue, and label the bag “Shannon’s Kids.” All money raised from the can drive will also go to help the youth.

New! New!

Shannon Nixon of Jamestown, New York has found a new way to put her philosophy and the-atrical talents to work to benefit youth in need of money for their medicine. “Shannon’s Kids Series” will beneift children undergoing medical treatment. The first show, “Classic Radio,” will be held November 9 & 10 at 8pm at Spire Theater in Jamestown, New York.

The Inaugural “The Witches Ball (and masquerade)” is coming to The Hotel at The Lafayette on Halloween night. The ball is the first public event to be hosted at the recently fully restored hotel. The theme of this year’s event is “Haute Macabre: from Glam to Ghoul,” and kicks off at 5pm with 200 zombies leading a zombie walk from City Hall to the hotel. From there guests will be treated to a Shining-esque experience in the main lobby - order a drink from Lloyd himself - before exploring the dark art exhibits lining the hallways (artists include Max Collins, Michael Mararian,

Paul Massaro and Mark Madden). The Witches Ball is working with members of Terror Technologies and Frightworld: America’s Screampark in order to bring classic no-nonsense thrills and chills to the city. If you’ve been looking for a downtown Halloween night masquerade with fantastic mystery and mayhem, The Witches Ball is coming to downtown Buffalo, NY. Join their ghastly scream team as they deliver decaying goods from the infamous Greg Hinaman (Terror Technologies and founder of The Vampire Ball). Attend the wedding ceremony of Frankenstein and

the Bride of Frankenstein - bride’s dress by Ali Eagan, rings by John Harris and wedding cake by Butterwood Sweet and Savory. Witness a steampunk fashion show, get kissed by a vampire and win a prize for the most blood-curdling scream! Meet the Marquis de Lafayette himself along with supernatural historian Mason Winfield and puppeterror Franklin LaVoie (in the Crystal Ballroom). There will be tarot card readers, fortunetellers and even a paranormal investigator. Expect a Frightworld hearse and a zombie response vehicle called The Death Truck full of zombies! Following that, there will be a Frightworld fashion show in the Crystal Ball Room, and then a performance of the Science of Ca’Dio from JPHii Design. For your listening pleasure you can head to the Grande Ballroom where DJ Cutler, The Ifs and Irving Klaws will be unleashing sounds from beyond. To top it off, visit a number of unique Hotel Lafayette businesses that will be open late the night of the ball. Stop into each bar and restaurant - The Pan-American Bar and Grill, Mike A’s Steakhouse and Lounge, Butterwood... or visit The Cauldron (presented by AcQua). Special visit by Cantina Loco taco stand. Browse retailers Anatomy, Room 2 and Woyshners... there’s nothing like it and it’s all under one roof. Tickets are $20 presale and include all entertainment. Devilish good food and drink are not included in ticket price. Partial proceeds to Buffalo Arts Society. Purchase your presale tickets via Paypal for $20... or $25 at the front door. To purchase your presale tickets visit: http://bit.ly/TheWitchesBall. You can also follow updates on the event on their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/events/476877868999957/

Planning

I’m throwing all my socks away. Why? They’re not dirty. They’re not old. They’re not full of holes. I’m throwing all my socks away because, as every parent knows, socks can be manipulated by little hands and little hands can turn those innocent little foot warmers into gay, anti-colonial, environmentally obsessed, radicalized Liberal puppets. As we all know puppets grow up to be Muppets and Muppets move to Sesame Street. The most Liberal block in America! Poor Big Bird. Poor Elmo. Bert and Ernie? Ya’ll shouldn’t be sleeping in the same bed! I’m not kidding here. This has been a topic of discussion everywhere since Mitt Romney announced in the first Presidential debate that he was going to turn the lights off on Sesame Street. More specifically, he said he would end federal funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Fine. That’s a legitimate argument. There are over 300 independent PBS stations across the country and the amount of federal funding they receive is actually quite paltry compared to what they

bring in from corporate sponsors and pledge drives. That’s where the argument should have ended. Of course it didn’t. Public discourse vomited all over the argument and it, like everything else in our sad little wrestling ring of a country, turned into a grudge match against Conservatives and their perceived boogyman of a threat “THE LIBERAL AGENDA!” That agenda, of course, has a summer home on Sesame Street. The bugle blast came (where else) from the wide eyed crazies over at the F-Network. FOX news. The elite Conservative media has been pushing buttons and killing Muppets all week. Sesame Street promotes a radical environmental message. They have a Gay agenda. They’re subtly against the one percent. They support the entitlement class. I couldn’t and wouldn’t make this stuff up. FOX news has been rallying against a Muppet named Lily. Lily is hungry. A child says she would gladly share her food with Lily. Good God! Radical Liberal Brainwashing! The Marxists on Sesame Street are turning our children into Bolsheviks! Who in their right, I mean Right, minds would try and teach a child to share? What kind of country are we turning into? Sharing is for Commies! This would all be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad. An entire “news” network and a host of bloggers attacking an imaginary street populated by mindless sock puppets. This is the network that features Sean Hannity! It would seem that they would spend a little more time trying to control their own mindless sock puppet! Seriously though.

Sesame Street? I attended a private Catholic School when I was young. K-6 to be specific. Every morning the Nuns would escort the entire class down to the Library. The youngest watched Sesame Street and the older kids watched The Electric Company. The puppets on Sesame Street made us laugh. They not only helped us learn to read, write and count, but they taught us life lessons and yes, sharing was one of those life lessons. They promoted the Golden Rule (remember that one) and they taught us compassion. None of what Sesame Street has given to generations of children has anything to do with anyones stupid agenda. Sesame Street is about making learning fun. It’s about preparing Children to be better adults. But, I guess, this is all to “deep” for the feeble minds at the F-Network to grasp. This is all so sad. I’m willing to bet that most, if not all of the commentators who have been attacking Sesame Street actually grew up watching the show. Somewhere along the line they themselves have been brainwashed into believing that the lessons Sesame Street teaches actually go against some imagined American Value. In their “Atlas Shrugged” version of Sesame Street the little girl would hurriedly gobble down her sandwich and tell poor Lily to “get a job hippie! Bert and Ernie would both be NRA members and we all know how that’s going to end for Big Bird. A giant pile of yellow feathers and huge meal for a gluttonous Muppet named Rush. Join us for the 5th Annual Beer & Food Pairing Event November 9, 2012 at Holiday Valley . weather last year made Fall Fest more of a summer fling while this year’s weather served as good contrast and a return to

what the southern tier is known for. Mr. McFadden also made the point that Ellicottville is first and foremost a ski town and that the cooler temperatures served as a gentle reminder to the attendees that it was time to gear up for the season. The Ski Sale saw some good business as did the retail shops selling winter wear such as Mud,

Swear and Gears. All things considered it was a proper send off to what was a beautiful summer and a gorgeous fall. Unlike many places that are now hunkering down for the dreary months ahead, the lucky livers in the town and village can turn their attention and excitement to old man winter.

Nussbaumer and Clark would be comfortable with the board approving the plans without the applicants there. A motion was made to approve the plans with the stipulation

that the list of changes previously required by the board be put in effect. Among them were: removal of the ingress and egress to the property from Elizabeth Street, fill dirt put in its place, and the ground seeded with grass and fertilized; and a sidewalk installed in place of the black top. In making those stipulations, the board had been clear they wanted to protect the residential quality

of the area. They added that in creating the C-3 Special Commercial Zone, it is stated that residential neighborhoods must be protected. There was discussion about a letter received from William Paladino about installing a parking pad behind the red brick building at the Kwik Fill station he is building. The board tabled discussion and the meeting was adjourned.

As cancer can attack virtually every tissue in the body, breast cancer is being attacked from all sides: education, examinations, prevention, various treatments, and support groups. Awareness is key. Each October the American Cancer Society sponsors a number of Making Strides for Breast Cancer walks. The next one will be in Jamestown October 14th. It starts as 10:00am at Jamestown Community College. But before you go sign up at the website www.makingstrides.acsevents.org. People are encouraged to organize teams, and many companies make matching gifts for their employees who participate. If you prefer you can walk as an individual. Last year over a million people walked in various Making Strides Walks, and raised over 60 million dollars to fund education, research, and support. Hundreds of

local breast cancer survivors, volunteers, businesses and community members will unite to fight breast cancer and save lives at this event. It is the area’s largest breast cancer awareness event and is a noncompetitive, inspirational walk that raises awareness and funds to fight breast cancer and provide hope to all people facing the disease. The money raised at the walks will be used by the American Cancer Society to save lives in several ways. First will be education; helping people stay well. The group will distribute cancer screening guidelines, remind women to get their mammograms, encourage women to maintain a healthy body weight, get exercise, and send out a Breast Cancer Update Newsletter. The Society helps people get well. Through transportation assistance to get people to and from treatment, and providing free lodging to those who must travel a great distance for treatment. They provide workshops that teach beauty techniques to female cancer patients to help deal with appearance-related side effects

of cancer treatment. Also they have cancer education classes and emotional support programs for those dealing with the trauma of cancer. Finding a cure for cancer; the American Cancer Society invests more money in research to find, prevent, treat, and cure cancer than any other non-governmental organization. As a result, they’ve played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history, including establishing mammography as the standard for breast cancer screening, discovering lifesaving treatments, and better understanding factors that can reduce a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer. But the ASC knows the easiest cancer to cure, is the cancer that’s detected early, and so they empathize finding breast cancer early through mammograms and self-examinations. Their early detection guidelines are the standard in the industry. The meaning of the Walk to Make Strides Against Breast Cancer is a message for every woman. It’s time for all women to step up for themselves.

Organizers expect a fine turnout, with interest in the festival being boosted by yard signs seen throughout the area. That’s according to Matthew Hanson, events manager for the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. “They’ve created a good buzz surrounding the show. “ Hanson says most people know about the upcoming show through marketing efforts and the yard signs. “We know it’s going to be a mainly walk-up type of a show.” Matthews expects to see a lot of foot traffic throughout the day, given that it’s a long show that will go well into the night. The five participating bands are Pressure Sensitive, Gina V and The Barn Cats, Smokehouse, Smackdab, and Big Leg Emma. Mathews says the show is going to be unique in its setup. Two stages will be set up, one

at either end of the arena. “It’s going to be mostly an open floor plan, kind of facilitating a festival type atmosphere.” Bands will be rotating between the stages, forcing people to move around and socialize. “Hopefully we will have people getting exposed to some new bands that they haven’t seen. We’re kind of excited to see how the logistics of the show end up working out.” Organizers are hoping to present well-known bands in a new setting. “Even though they may play a lot in the area, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve seen them before. The idea is to get all these great local acts in one place.” Matthews notes that Gina V and the Barn Cats, already popular in Dunkirk and Fredonia, might get a bit more local exposure and recognition by playing at the Rocktoberfest. “We wanted to kind of touch on different genres, and try to reach out a little bit outside of just Jamestown for bands that have good name recognition and a bit of a good following to begin with.” Matthews is hoping that

Rocktoberfest attracts people who have never before been to the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. He notes that, with all the events hosted at the arena like hockey games and graduations, some people he’s talked with have never been inside. “Hopefully they will enjoy themselves and have a good time.” The future may hold more such shows at the arena, according to Matthews. “We’re a not-for-profit community center. We support everything that the community does, whether it’s youth events, youth sports, or things done by the Lucy-Desi Museum for the Lucy Fest. “ He notes that all the bands are out there working hard to entertain in the community, “So it’s important to work closely with everybody and provide the highest quality of entertainment you can for your community.” You can enjoy seven hours of Rocktoberfest for $20 a ticket. The show is for all ages. For additional information, call 716-484-2624, follow Rocktoberfest on Facebook, or visit www.jamestownarena.com.

Letter To The EditorHoliday Valley’s Dinner Before The Fest Nov 9

We would like to thank everyone who attended our Mager Mountain Alpacas open house and helped us celebrate our 10th anniversary of raising alpacas. A warm thank you to all who donated to the Smile Train Charity totaling $150.00 and my grandchildren who cooked the hot dogs to make that possible. Congratulations to all who prizes including Kathy Weishan who won a large Pronkbear Teddy Bear by sinking 3 golf balls in the putt-putt contest. Other winners included Bill Wood of Springville who won

an Alpaca blanket, Hayden Rodger Olson won a Jr. Pronkbear, Ashton Cook of East Otto who won a baby Pronkbear and Sandy Sullivan from Bemus Point won a knit alpaca. Congratulation to all participants. A special thanks to Amanda Grabowski and Annie Widger for their spinning demonstrations and information of this ancient art. Another special thanks to Cathie Bridges of R.A. Mercer P.C. for answering questions on the tax code.s The alpaca kissing booth operated by Greg and Nancy

Whelan was a huge success. Everyone got a chance to touch an alpaca and feel why their fleece is so soft and special. Each person received a photo of themselves with an alpaca to help them remember the experience. A special thanks to our son, daughter and their families who helped greet visitors and answer questions. Hopefully everyone left with a better understanding of these rare and unique animals and why we raise them. With Warm Regards,Paul and Sue Mager Mager Mountain Alpacas
