The Talks in Keller Hall Talks begin at 9:00 with a new talk every 15 minutes. Family activities are happening around the building, too!

Julia Church Hoffman, Director, Music Prep School

Music DOES matter . . . More than Ever Welcome to the first ever MPS Talks!, a celebration of music in the lives of children. Julia will share thoughts about the Music Prep School’s nearly 25 years of providing high quality, affordable, accessible, music education opportunities for Albuquerque’s children at the University of New Mexico.

Robin Giebelhausen UNM Assistant Professor, Music Education

Play: The Work of Children in Music Class Why Play? Beyond the fun factor, there are pedagogical reasons for focusing on play in music education. Robin (and friends!) will present how musical skills are learned through playful activities inside the music classroom when taught by a skillful teacher who has mastered presenting musical lessons in engaging ways.

Holly Deuel Gilster, Music Educator UNM Music Prep/APS

The Power of Listening Maps In a world where phones ring & toys talk, where the Xbox booms & radios blare, how do we teach children to listen with intention? This demonstration will reveal how listening maps allow listeners to see the whole piece, anticipate the parts & organize the music.

Tania Hopkins, Music Educator for Ages 0-5, UNM Music Prep Peaceful Parenting through Music Tania will explore ways to lovingly connect with children through playful musical activities. Music in the home can be used to encourage strong attachment, predictable routines and more joyful and peaceful families.

Alexis Corbin, Operations Coordinator, NM Philharmonic Tocar y Luchar: Embracing the Struggle A window into the New Mexico Philharmonic’s Young Musician’s Initiative, an El Sistema USA youth outreach program for Title 1 elementary school students in Albuquerque’s south valley. Founding Director, Alexis, will share stories of the program’s five-year history, including lessons learned & inspirations found along the way.

Traci Quinn, UNM Art Museum, Curator of Education & Public Prog. Artful Thinking How can visual arts contribute to the ways our children think about and understand the world? Rather than seeing art as something to be hung on walls, Traci, a frequent collaborator with the Music Prep School, will introduce the power of art as a medium for freely and creatively exploring complex ideas. Before or after the talk, join us outside, around the corner from Keller Hall, in a participatory art project with our friends from the UNM Art Museum.

Amy Greer, Pianist, Teacher, Author The Life-Changing Magic of Practicing Practicing. There is no other word more associated with music, nor more charged with assumptions, both good and bad. We all have practices: playing video games, walking our dog, sending holiday cards. However, practicing music has wonderful possibilities. Let’s explore how practicing can change & shape us in wonderful ways.

Voces8 and Paul Smith, Voces8 Co-founder UNM Children’s Chorus Lobo Choir Manzano Day School Good Apple Singers Penny Voss, Teacher/Conductor

The British vocal ensemble VOCES8 is one of the world’s most versatile and best-loved singing groups. Touring extensively throughout Europe, North America and Asia, VOCES8 inspires people through their performances and unique educational programs. Voces8’s co-founder, Paul Smith, will

explain the music education work Voces8 shares with singers around the world. Our morning will conclude in song, with a performance by Voces8, the children and everyone in the audience!

David Bashwiner, Assoc. Professor, Music Theory This is Your Brain on Music Education It has long been believed that educating children in music is beneficial to them not merely socially and emotionally, but also mathematically and linguistically, not to mention creatively. This talk will present research, conducted by David and others, attesting to the many ways in which musical training and experience enhance cognitive and emotional development – not merely “psychologically,” but in the structure and function of the brain itself.
