UTEP SWE’s collegiate Section will like to take the opportunity to disclose briefly the current

situation in our border region. Despite the fact that our twin city Juarez is undergoing a very

delicate situation with violence in its streets, our city of El Paso has been ranked the 2nd safest

city in the U.S. We want to emphasize that our guests can feel secure while attending our

conference.

Sincerely,

Conference Committee

Conference Theme ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We propose a “Grand Opportunities for Women in Engineering” theme for the 2013 Region C

Conference. This theme was derived from the Grand Challenges in Engineering theme that has

been addressed in various forums nationally and globally. The needs and desires to expand the

problem of sustainability and advancement while improving the quality of life await

engineering solutions. We believe that the role of women towards these challenges open the

doors to opportunities into practice. The need to provide access to clean water, to make solar

energy economical, to restore and improve urban infrastructure, to engineer better medicines,

to have a secure cyberspace, and to meet the demands of the engineer 2020 are some of the

topics that will like to take part of our Grand Opportunities for Women Engineering.

To reinforce the theme we would secure keynotes in the areas of interest.

Have panel discussions with faculty and professionals.

Have tours in the El Paso region that are relevant to the theme e.g. the Desalination Plant,

White Sands and the expansion of Fort Bliss.

We will partner with UTEP Gaining Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

(GEAR UP) to bring around 300 high school students to take part of the workshops and to

experience firsthand how the Society of Women Engineers engage its members to make a

change in this world.

Description of Location ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

El Paso is located at the western tip of Texas, where Texas, New Mexico and Old Mexico meet. It is the largest international metroplex in the world and seamlessly blends cultures and traditions: from the historic Old West to the colors of Mexico, from the heritage of Native Americans to the beauty of our desert sun.

El Paso has long been discovered. Since the early days when Spanish Conquistadors arrived at the banks of the Rio Grande in 1598, to today, with the millions of visitors who come here on a yearly basis.

The high mountains, which cut through the middle of the city, offer a dramatic setting for El Paso. Visitors can ride the Wyler Aerial Tramway to Ranger Peak to get a panoramic view of the city, or drive along Transmountain Road which cuts right through the Franklin Mountains. You can enjoy a picnic in the largest urban park in the U.S.: Franklin Mountains State Park, or for outdoor explorers, there's also mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing virtually any time of the year.

Our natural beauty is a rarity in today's world. During the day, our mountains take on shades of purple, vibrant orange and pale green. The sun shines over 305 days a year in El Paso. Wide-open vistas, big skies and beautiful desert weather are the norm, and almost every day ends with a breathtaking sunset. At night our city lights look like a scattering of diamonds.

The University of Texas at El Paso campus is located on 500 W. University Ave. El

Paso, TX 79968. We are 9 miles away from The El Paso International Airport. From the

El Paso Intl. Airport, take Airway Blvd. to I-10 West. Exit 19A-Mesa St. and stay to the

right on Mesa. Travel about .8 mi. on Mesa to University Ave.
