Warm Greetings to All--

The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club is honored to offer our 160th Annual Fall Concert for you this evening, titled, “You Are Enough”.

Tonight’s concert features music spanning over 200 years with songs representing numerous cultures and singing traditions. Most notably, a portion of our program this evening was inspired by multiple conversations with members of the Glee Club over the course of last year focused on the topic of mental health. I was so moved by the vulnerability of these Clubbers and their desire to create a caring culture in the Glee Club to support each person’s mental health journey. I felt we had an opportunity to use our artistic platform as a way to elevate conversations regarding mental health for the sake of the Glee Club, the University and the broader community.

The Glee Club members embraced this focal point wholeheartedly, and we commissioned three brand new pieces to speak to this topic head on. Aron Accurso, a composer, conductor and Broadway music director from New York City, partnered with us to bring this new music to life. The simple, yet profound statement, “You are enough, you are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are” became the core message behind the commissioning project. Beyond music, we’ve formed strategic partnerships with mental health organizations this fall, including The Chalkboard Project, Wolverine Support Network, CAPS, Garrett’s Space, and the MyVoice study on Mental Health to name a few. All of this with the aim to serve our community through song and end the stigma associated with mental health.

As you walked into HIll Auditorium this evening, you saw pictures brought to us by our friends at The Chalkboard Project, of our Clubbers holding chalkboards containing words representing the negative labels they have believed to be true about themselves at points within each of their lives. As you leave tonight, we invite you to take part in helping to transform these negative labels by writing positive and true words for each Clubber. Words matter when it comes to our mental health and we thank you for helping us be mindful to change the way we speak to one another.

Additionally, following our concert, we will be hosting a “concert talk-back” featuring a panel of people deeply invested in advancing conversations and critical care for all people in their mental health journey. This panel will include the composer of the “You Are Enough” Mental Health Suite, Aron Accurso, along with other significant influencers and scholars from across the University community. This “talk-back” will be held right here inside the auditorium immediately following the concert.

Whether this is your first concert with the Men’s Glee Club, or you’ve lost count of how many you’ve attended over the years, we are truly grateful for your presence with us this evening. Our hope is that you will leave here encouraged and strengthened for life’s journey through the message of our music and our passion for singing.

In Tradition, Camaraderie and Musical Excellence,

Mark Stover

Reprinted from programs inLondon’s Royal Festival Hall:

“During a recent test in the hall, a note played mezzo forte on the horn measured approximately 65 decibels of sound. A single

‘uncovered’ cough gave the same reading. A handkerchief placed over the mouth when coughing assists in obtaining a pianissimo.”

Please refrain from coughing until each piece is finished and be sure personal electronics are in silent mode or

switched off during the concert.

Founded in 1859, The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club is one of the oldest collegiate choruses in the United States and has been long acclaimed as one of the finest male choruses in the world. The Glee Club is known for its wide repertoire of music that incorporates selections from different musical styles and periods including Renaissance motets, Romantic anthems, opera choruses, folksongs, spirituals, contemporary works, and, of course, Michigan songs. Since 2011, the club has premiered over twenty new arrangements and compositions.

In 1959, Michigan Men’s Glee Club was the first American male chorus to win the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, (and has since won three more first prizes at the same competition). In 1967, the Glee Club circled the globe in celebration of the University’s sesquicentennial year. Recent international tours have included Southeast Asia (1989), Eastern and Central Europe (1992), South America (1996), Australia (2000), the British Isles (2004), Spain (2008), Cuba (2011), China (2012), and South Africa (2016). The Club has made appearances at Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls at Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the pre-game festivities for the 1984 World Series. Other notable appearances include the 1986 and the 2004 IMC National Seminar at Harvard University, the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Conventions in 1992, 2000, 2010, and the ACDA National Convention in San Diego in 1997. The Club was also honored to be featured on Mannheim Steamroller’s double platinum CD Christmas Extraordinaire in 2001. Recently, they gave two performances at the esteemed National American Choral Directors Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah (2015) and appeared at the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses National Seminar at the University of Illinois (2016).

In 2016, the Michigan Men’s Glee Club recorded and premiered its documentary film, “Love, Life & Loss.” This film documents the Club’s performance of “Seven Last Words of the Unarmed,” a multi-movement work by Joel Thompson commemorating the lives of African American men lost due to brutality. The film won five Michigan Emmy awards, was featured in a broadcast on Detroit Public Television, and has been submitted to film festivals worldwide for screenings. In June 2017, the documentary received seven Michigan Emmy Awards for directing, performance and compositions.

The scope of the Men’s Glee Club reaches far beyond rehearsals and performances; the Club is a vibrant social organization with a national outreach program to diverse communities called “Brothers in Song.” Through this program, the Glee Club partners with organizations such as Detroit School of Arts, Chicago Children’s Choir, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and others. In addition, the group frequently collaborates with Glee Clubs around the nation such as Michigan State, Cornell, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Miami of Ohio, Harvard, and Yale Glee Clubs. The graduate and undergraduate members of the Glee Club represent many diverse fields of study in the majority of the University’s 19 schools and colleges, and its student officers are responsible for the management of all non-musical Glee Club operations. The Friars, an a cappella subset of the Glee Club, serve as an extension of Club as they maintain an ambitious performing schedule.

you aim at the center of the eyeyou gather all landscape around that single point: if a bird-ribbon flies across the edge if a cloud teases the sunyou gather all to the one point

there is only one

The letting go:

you no longer lean against the bowyour hock is freeyou are freeyou are in dangerremember the center

all of you remembers the center

The flight:

you are moving along an invisible track(you make it yourself )straight as your spine is straight

There is a meeting here tonight!

Well there’s a meeting here tonight,There’s a meeting here tonight,I can tell by your friendly face

there’s a meeting here tonight.

Well I went down in the valley one day,Met old Satan on my way.

What do you reckon old Satan did say?He said, “Turn back, young man

You’re too young to pray.”

Satan got mad and I am glad,Lost a soul he thought he had.

Satan is a liar and a conjure too,You better watch out brother

he’ll conjure you.

Well there’s a meeting here tonight,There’s a meeting here tonight,I can tell by your friendly face

there’s a meeting here tonight.

May songs and praises to you, O University, be sweetest,

But may our foes, indeed,go swiftly to the crows!

O glory, victory, and virtue of everything;prosper, O University of Michigan.

Widerspruch(text by Johann Seidl)

(tr. Ron Jeffers; ed. David Hahn)

Ach! wie beschränkt, wie eng,Wird mir’s im Luftgedräng;

Rings auf mein Haupt, so schwer,Nicken die Wolken her,Nieder zu stürzen drohtRings mir das Abendrot,Und in ein Kämmerlein

Sehnt sich mein Herz hinein!

When I break through bush and branchon a narrow trail,

I become so boundless, so free,my heart wants to break in two,

Then all around me the wallsof the forest house push outward,

The leafy chamber arches high abovea roof of dizzying height.

Every leaf weaves itself into wings for me,

So that my boundless heartlongs for infinity.

But when I stand in the vast expanseat the rim of the mountain range,

High above the valley, when I look down to the valley

Ah, how restricted, how confinedand crowded the air becomes!

The clouds around my head nodso heavily toward me,

The sunset threatens tocrash down around me,

And my heart longs to withdrawinto a little chamber.

Thou didst delight my eyes(poem by Robert Bridges)

The Pasture(text from You Come Too by Robert Frost)

Thou didst delight my eyes:Yet who am I? nor first

Nor last nor best, that durstOnce dream of thee for prize;

Nor this the only timeThou shalt set love to rhyme.

Thou didst delight my ear:Ah! little praise; thy voice

Makes other hearts rejoiceMakes all ears glad that hear;

And short my joy: but yet,O song, do not forget.

For what wert thou to me?How shall I say? The moon,

That pour’d her midnight noonUpon his wrecking sea;—

A sail, that for a dayHas cheer’d the castaway.

I’m going out to clean the pasture spring;I’ll only stop to rake the leaves away

(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too.

I’m going out to fetch the little calfThat’s standing by the mother. It’s so young,It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

I sha’n’t be gone long.—You come too.

Music in the AirCombined Men of Lincoln and Men’s Glee Club

(African American spiritual text)

Over my head I hear music in the air,Over my head I hear music in the air,Over my head I hear music in the air,

There must be a God somewhere.

And when I’m alone, I hear music in the air,And when I’m afraid, I hear music in the air,And when it’s dark, I hear music in the air,

And when I’m weary, I hear music in the air.

Please Stay(arr. Jake Runestad, adopted from tweets using #IKeptLiving)

No! Don’t go!

Don’t let your worst day be your last. The storm is strong, but it will pass.

You think you can’t go on another day,but please stay.

Just stay.

Hope is real. Help is real. You are breath, you are life,

you are beauty, you are light.

Your story is not over. You are not a burden to anyone.

Please stay. Just stay.

If thoughts come like rain,and wind knocks you down,You feel lost at sea, all alone;

Too tired to swim, afraid you might drown,You don’t have to fight on your own.

I’ll ride the current beside you.I’ve been there before

An ocean of fear that goes on and on,But trust me there is shore.

When thoughts flood your mind, the tide pulls you in,

And waves break, but you can’t break through

I’ll stay with you inside the storm, I’ll stay with you.

We don’t have to smile and say there’s sunWe don’t have to lie and say it’s warm

We’ll find our way throughfog and freezing rain;

We’ll make it through the storm.

If you’re overwhelmed by water and windAnd hope is a world out of view,

I’ll stay with you inside the storm, I’ll stay with you.

You are—“I’m not____enough.” [Three singers exclaim fears of not being enough]

You are—“I’m a ____.” (noun)[Three more singers exclaim their word from the chalkboard project, a word that has hurt them in the past]

You are—you are strong. “I’m weak”, “I’m ____” (adjective)

You are brave.“I’m ____” (adjective)

You are—[Five more singers exclaim their words]

You are—I’m not good enough.

You are worthy.I’m the only one.I’m alone.

You are not alone.I never will.

You will—[All singers sing, at the same time, the word, or thought, that has hurt them]

Let it go. Breathe, just breathe.

[All singers inhale, and exhale]

You are brave. You are worthy. You are strong. You are loved. You’re ok.

You’ve carried wordsthat aren’t true so long:

The labels they put on you. You’ve gotten lost in these

storms of thoughts, And forgotten the way to break through.

Erase them one by one, you’re not who they decide.

You are enough. You’re so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are.

You’ve let them write who you are, so far,They’re wrong, you are up to you.

You’ve gone adrift in a sea of doubtAnd forgotten the love that you knew.

Write your life in bold, there’s no reason to hide.

You are enough. You’re so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are.

Let the light come in and find a home in you.Let the light multiply with everything you do.

You are enough. You’re so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are,

You are. You are!

You are enough!

True Colors(text by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly; ed. James Deignan)

You with the sad eyesDon’t be discouraged don’t you realize

It’s hard to take courageIn a world full of people

You can lose sight of it alland the darkness inside youCan make you feel so small

I see your true colors shining throughI see your true colors

and that’s why I love you

So don’t be afraid to let it showTrue colors are beautiful like a rainbow

Just smile, please smileDon’t be unhappy

Can’t remember when Ilast saw you laughing

If this world makes you crazyAnd you’ve taken all you can bear

Just call me up‘cause you know I’ll be there

I Have Had Singing(text by Fred Mitchell)

Singing, singing, oh the singing! There was so much singing then!

We all sang, and this was my pleasure too.

The boys in the fields, the chapels were full of singing,

always full of singing.

Here I lie, here I lie,I have had pleasure enough,

I have had singing.

Mark Stover, Music Director Regarded as a leading conductor and pedagogue in the US and abroad, Professor Mark Stover shares his passion for people and building community through pursuing the highest levels of artistry. He is in his second year serving as associate director of choirs at the University of Michigan where he conducts the Men’s Glee Club and the University Choir, teaches undergraduate conducting, and serves as the conductor of the Michigan Youth Chamber Singers.Professor Stover came to Ann Arbor from Northfield, Minnesota, the home of Saint Olaf College, where he served on the music faculty as conductor of the St. Olaf Chapel Choir (SATB) and Viking Chorus (TTBB) while teaching conducting and a new course he designed titled, Music and Social Justice. Both of his choirs regularly appeared in the annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, a tradition held for over a century and regarded around the world as one of the great music festivals of the season. While teaching at St. Olaf, Prof. Stover led the Chapel Choir, Viking Chorus, and the Festival Mass Choir of over 400 voices in the St. Olaf Christmas Festival presented at Orchestra Hall in

Minneapolis at the 2017 National Convention of the American Choral Conductors Association (ACDA). Additionally, Stover served for multiple seasons as the artistic director of Magnum Chorum, a professional calibre choral ensemble of over 60 voices based in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Magnum Chorum was also a featured ensemble in the 2017 ACDA National Conference in the Raymond C. Brock Commission performance under the baton of Robert Spano. Notable performances and collaborations under Stover’s leadership with Magnum Choruminclude the commissioning and world premiere of Paul Rudoi’s concert length musical drama, Sermonon the Mount; a collage concert creation with composer Jake Runestad addressing gun violence in theUnited States; and major works by Rheinberger and Gjeilo. Additionally Prof. Stover conducted the annual oratorio concert with the St. Olaf Orchestra and Chapel Choir, performing Francis Poulenc’s Gloria,Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and a new work by Charles Forsberg, titled, Cantica in Laude Sacri. In spring 2018, Prof. Stover’s Chapel Choir collaborated with the St. Olaf Choir and Orchestra to bring an original Buddhist oratorio to Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis for the world premiere of The Path by composer Justin Merritt. Among his most meaningful musical partnerships is the creation of a residency between the singers of Magnum Chorum and Voices of Hope, a choir made up of women incarcerated at the Shakopee Women’s Prison (MN), directed by Amanda Weber. This work of singing in prisons has now extended to the Glee Club as we have now shared in two special performances for men incarcerated at the Federal Prison in Milan, Michaign. Prof. Stover has been featured as a conductor and pedagogue throughout the United States and abroad and has led ensembles in Ukraine and France. In 2014, Stover guest conducted the famed St. Olaf Choir and led the ensemble in performances through the Midwest. In 2019, Stover was named Artistic Director of the Together In Hope Project, a professional touring choral ensemble from the Twin Cities who recently traveled to perform several concerts in Rome and throughout the state of Minnesota. Additional international engagements had him leading the 2019 Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools in Singapore and coming up in May of 2020, he will lead the Glee Club on a three week international tour through Argentina, Chile and Peru. Prof. Stover holds degrees from St. Olaf College and Luther Seminary where he studied conducting and choral repertoire under the mentorship of Dr. Anton Armstrong and Dr. Paul Westermeyer.

Quotes From the myvoiCe study oN meNtal health

“I think taking care of your body starts with taking care of your brain.”

“...it’s ok to feel de-pressed sometimes and to talk to some-one... ...My dad said one time that there was ‘no such thing as depression’ and that’s why I never talk to my parents about my mental health. People, teens, kids won’t open up if they don’t feel like they’re in a safe envi-ronment. We need to make that for them.”

“People who think it will pass might not seek care. People who are told it is a phase and to get over it might not seek care. And men are more unlikely to seek help because society tells them to man up.”

“[Adults] need to realize what problems the youth are fac-ing and actually listen with sympathy, rather that compar-ing youth experiences today with their own. It comes from a place of sympathy and wanting to understand... You don’t have to fully empathize and connect with youth experiences. You just have to say I’m listening, I want to help, and I am going to try and understand anyway I can. Adults need to elevate youth voices.”

“[It would help] to ... treat de-pression and anxiety and every mental illness like a normal thing that can happen to anyone. To not shame or glamourize mental illness.”

[I’d want to talk to] someone other than my friends or family, since I would feel like a burden.

“People don’t understand/believe how se-rious the issues can be, or they don’t think anyone will help them, or they are scared to ask for help and think they should just figure it out on their own.”

THE YELLOW AND BLUE(Sponsored by the UMMGC Alumni Network)

Sing to the colors that float in the light;Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Yellow the stars as they ride thro’ the night,And reel in a rollicking crew;

Yellow the fields where ripens the grain,And yellow the moon on the harvest wain; Hail!

Hail to the colors that float in the light;Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Blue are the billows that bow to the sunWhen yellow robed morning is due;

Blue are the curtains that ev’ning has spun,The slumbers of Phœbus to woo;

Blue are the blossoms to memory dear,And blue is the sapphire and gleams like a tear; Hail!

Hail to the ribbons that nature has spun;Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!

Here’s to the college whose colors we wear,Here’s to the hearts that are true!

Here’s to the maid of the golden hair,And eyes that are brimming with blue!

Garlands of bluebells and maize intertwine; And hearts that are true and voices combine; Hail!

Hail to the college whose colors we wear;Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
