Seniors on Close-Upby Ariel Gonzales

Close Up-- the senior trip to Washington is a way for the seniors to experience what they learned in Government the semester before. The trip lasts six days from January 29 through February 3. New teacher Ms. Cox, who teaches American History, will accompany the seniors this year on Close Up. Academic Dean, Mrs. Larsen and Government teacher, Mr. Burgin (the usual supervisors) had a meeting with the seniors on September 23 to give a brief description of the Close Up trip.

“Going on Close Up allows the seniors to see what they learned from the government book come to life, they are able to see the government work-ing in reality let’s call it ‘learning in action!’” Mrs. Larsen enthusiastically says. “Going on Close Up widens student’s perspective on the way the government runs.”

Seeing alum Steve Jones ’94 working with the Ma-jority Whip James Clyburn, was one of her fondest memories. The students and Dean Larsen herself were able to see from the gallery in the House of Representatives the Majority Whip in action. She has also met Secretary of State Colin Powell, Representatives Ted Poe, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Gene Green and many more.

“Going to Washington, learning from the history and museums, and watching the seniors learn and grow, are my favorite parts of Close Up.” Dean Larsen stated. “There are few things seniors should miss a week of school for but this is one of them!”

Facebook, YouTube, email, Google, or even our monthly Torchbearer are just a few of the countless examples of Social Media we make use of daily. For the most part, imagining life without social media is heartbreaking. The Positive School Climate Initia-tive (PSCI) meeting in Spetember centered around its countless uses and students shared their options of social media.

One student at the PSCI meeting said that social media is the greatest thing to happen to man,and that without it, we wouldn’t be able to communicate with people across the world. Another student had men-tioned that social media was a bad thing, because it brings out the inner bully in people, who feel stron-ger behind a computer or a phone.

Belinda Owino, a St. Pius X 2011 alumnus, ex-plained her use of social media and shared her perspective of how it benefitted her at St. Pius X and her business.

She feels that social media can be used as a vehicle of speaking out to her target market. It helped her communicate through status updates, creative videos, and using her outgoing nature to reach people while

getting feedback with ease.

“Abundant Cupcakes had a very humble beginning and it is amazing how God works! We are now at

over 100 fans due to word-of-mouth thanks to social media. Without social media, the promotions through photos, short videos, and flyers would not be visible to such a wide audience,” Belinda added “Social media in a sense has instilled a stronger entrepreneurship value in me. Now, whenever I have an ambition or goal, I immediately turn to the social media circuit to begin the process to let the word be known,” Belinda enthused.

When asked what her next big project will be through social media, she said,“Books2Afrika, my book and school supply drive, is an example of an ambition turned into reality because of social media. My next venue with social media in terms of Books2Afrika is to propose a documentary idea and with the help of
