The Tontine was built between 1806 and 1808 by French prisoners of war. The construction was financed on the “Tontine” principle which is quoted in the words of the original proprietors as “any age to be entered, and the longest lives to have right to the whole.” Sir Duncan Hay of Hayston, who had been nominated in infancy, succeeded the whole as the survivor. The hotel was purchased in 1922 by Trust Houses, who have extended the original building considerably. The Hotel is the only building on the High Street of Peebles to have its own courtyard complete with early 19th century cobblestone. The Adam Room Restaurant is now a magnificent specimen of a Georgian Assembly Room, ’with a minstrel’s gallery and a working Adam fireplace. During the winter months the real coal fires re-create the atmosphere of the hotel in its early days. GOOD MORNING!
