The Three Fates
❖ three sisters and the daughters of Zeus and Themis
❖ described as old and ugly women.
❖ Three days after a child was born the sisters would visit the house and determine the child’s fate and life by spinning, measuring, and cutting the “String of Life.”
Clotho❖ the youngest of The three
sisters❖ the “Spinner of Life”❖ she spins the thread of
human life with her distaff (stick)
❖ string determines how long a person's life will be
Lachesis ❖ is Known as the “allotter” or
“the caster of lots”❖ is depicted as a Matron❖ measures the life of each person
with the length with her measuring rod
❖ Symbol = scroll or globe (horoscope)
Atropos
❖ Known as the “inflexible” or ‘inevitable”
❖ Oldest sister
❖ Cuts the thread of life/ determines the time
the time of death
Other interpretations of the Three fates❖ also known as the destinies, Moirae
➢ their theme is fate / destinies❖ Most of the stories = they determine both mortal
and deties lives❖ In some myths they were daughters of zeus and the
titan goddess Themis (goddess of divine order)➢ in others they were daughters of Ananke (the
personification of necessity)➢ others they are created by the nyx
