Ii $as Ln lg77 when I, like many other Americans, caught
i!.e .genealogy" bug after watehing on television the moving
acecnsrt of Alex Haleyos search for his oltn family roots'
Gf I went to libraries and seminars to learn the finer
poi.:ats of genealogy research. I soon reaLized that famiLy
researeh is not done by book alone. The best source for
ycg family roots are the family members themseLves. So
I yrote or taLked with alL of you about my !{ork and asked
for !.our he1p. And help I got! The information I received
froo. each of you, no matter ho\d unimPortant you thought it
iligbt have been, proved to be invaluable in my effort to
research the Therrien family tree'
After almost a year of research work, I put aside my efforts
j-31 1978 to pursue my graduate studies part-time whiL€ cor-
tinuing to work. A job chang:e, :a new horoe' severaL other
grojects, and five years l-ater I have finally returned to
fi-nish m:a genealogy research. In addition to the infor-
mation suppJ-ied by farnily members, I was abLe to accelerate
ccqrletion of my research because of the previous research
coatained in the books listed in the Bibliography. Without
-.irese publications my research would have taken several
rcre years.
o!3e of the major obstacLes that I have faced throughout my
research is the French langruage. Although I studied French
i.ro bigh schooL for two years, this $tas certainly not enough
-.sai-ning to handle aL1 of the French research materiaL that

-:*"e ftrerrien famiLy to be gathered and many more ancestors
tc be discovered. I will maintain that this account of the

because I had no other genealogical materiaL available'
i\l:rther research in France via contacts at city haLl-s and
pa-rishes will be necessary to deveS.op new information on the
i}eg'rien family. HopefuJ-Iy this can be accornplished through
correspondence rather than a costly though enjoyable visit

lle Therrien family roots can be traced back to France in
:}e Late l500rs. In France, the Therrien family was knc,wn
:l- t:1e name Terrien. The name means t'one 'vtho was a man of
:he earth". Records indicate that indeed the Terrien's
ffe:e farmers (jardiners). ft is not known if they were
1a:i.arners or whether they were simpJ-y farmhands working
jcr a landcwner, The Terrienrs Lived just north of and
c-r.--side of the citlnuatls of the port city of La Rochelle
igj:ich is located on France t s western shore and north of
3crCeaux) in a vill-age by the name of La Fond. The parish6h
:ae Terrienss belonged to was Notre Dame and it was Located in
Le. RochelLe. The area around Ia Rochelle today is still known
jor its agricuLtural products. An interesting fact about
Ia R.ocheLle is that it was heavily populated by the English
ari was knol.rn aS a Protestant city. The city was "freed"
ircm protestant dominance by Catholic forces under Cardinal
?.{chleau (and his Musketeers) in L628, af'ter a year long
sei.ge of the city which reduced the population from 20,000
-;O 5,OOO. La RochelLe was a major sea port for France in
:ae 15o0ts, 16OOrs and l700rs. Many of the innnigrants to
3a-::,ada (uew France) eame from the La Rochelle area.
3*o of the Terrien'family left, La RocheLle for Canada between
1550 and 1670. They probably lived in Quebec after arriving
si::ce that was the largest city and main destination for
?re-e,ch vessels. The Terriens changed their names Or Som€-
o::.e changed it for them after arriving in Canada to Therrien.

lae Therriens continued to work as farmers and to raise
:crses. After living in Quebec, the Therrien family moved
= j.:st to St. ,Jean ( 1700 ?) , then the family spJ-it up by
=oving in 1786? to St. NichoLas, St. Gervais, and St. Charles.
lae family again moved to St. Slyvestre in 1830? and finally
:o St. Agathe in 1890. ALl- of these q,ere small towns and
ajre located in the area just south of Quebec.
Il' 1928 the Therriens moved to the United States locating
i= Berlin, New llampshire. The move \pas made in an effort to
:bd better jobs. Rather than farming as they had done for
=any generations, the Therriens turned to logging. In addi-
:ion, the Therriens began to give up the French language
:bey had used for over 400 years. Today, most of the
5:rerrien famiLy resides in and around Rochester, New Hamp-
shire.Iae remainder of this prrblication has three main parts:
