EOI Sagunt takes its students to Calpe to celebrate

On the 25th & 26th October, the German

department of E.O.I. Sagunt is organising a trip to

Calpe to celebrate this typical German party.

Oktoberfest means October Party in German,

because it originally took place during the 16 days

up to, and including, the first Sunday in

Oktoberfest started in1810 when crown prince

Ludwig married princess Theresa and the citizens

of Munich were invited to attend the festivities

held on Theresa’ meadow.

A huge part of Oktoberfest is the upbeat songs.

Knowing the most popular songs ahead of time

really makes it more fun, like the famous ‘Salute

You’ (Ein Prosit) where every 15 minut

are cheering and drinking. There are popular

songs in which people can participate in the

chorus, like in ‘The Flier Song’ (Fliegerlied), a

lot of folk music, marches and polkas. But

For the purpose of knowing more about the trip,

we have interviewed one of the German

teachers:

-Is this the first time the school has organized a

trip to the Oktoberfest?

Yes, it is. We are very excited about this trip and

we hope that everything goes well.

-What is the main reason why you have organised

this trip?

We want our students to learn mor

German culture and their gastronomy.

-Do you recommend the trip to students of other

languages?

Yes! Of course I do! Everyone is invited!

New Technologies

POWER IN OUR HANDS

Do you remember when...

...you had no mobile phone?

...you wrote letters?

...you bought the magazines and newspaper in the newsstand?

...you used maps in order to arrive anywhere?

...you looked for information in encyclopedies and libraries?

...you had to go to banks or City Hall for any paperwork?

...you had your pictures on paper?

What has happened? Computing evolution and especially communications (Internet) has allowed full

access to information and multiple services that previously we could not imagine.

New technologies have completely changed our habits. It has changed the way we relate to other people

and the world in general. Try to answer this question: How much of your communications is done

electronically?

These improvements make our lives easier. Sure. But there are risks:

● Dependence on new technologies such as nomophobia (the more you use mobile phone, the more

you need it)

● Unreliable and false information

● Lost Intimacy

● New kinds of theft and scams

● Personal and family relationships have changed

● Other new addictions: compulsive shopping, pornography, gambling, violence, ..etc

Therefore, It is necessary to foster a good education and awareness to all these developments, especially

for young people, so that they do not succumb to temptation and get to know the resources of this new

virtual world in the safest way possible.

Mascarell, the Middle Ages next to your house

GENERAL INFORMATION

This little village with defensive walls belongs to the municipality of Nules in Castellón province. As in the

past, Moncofar and Vilavella, it belonged to the barony and Marquesado de Nules, and became a district of

this last villa at the end of the 19th century. Currently some 250 people are still living in Mascarell.

GoogleMap of the area of Mascarell

HISTORY

This small walled town was founded by the Moors King Jaime I expelled from Burriana. From its origins in

1310 it was inhabited only by muslims. In 1554 Maria de Cardona (lady of Nules) repopulated Mascarell

with christians, also, she ordered that the city be surrounded by the wall, leaving Moors out until their

complete expulsion. After a declining period the city council requested its annexation in 1872 to the

municipality of Nules.

Mascarell is unique and has a great historical and artistic interest (along with Ureña in Valladolid) it is the

only urban area in Spain which is completely surrounded by walls and this area, surrounded simultaneously

by a moat which now has been converted into an irrigation ditch. Mascarell, forms a rectangle, in the

center of each side there are defense towers whose objetive was to protect the two only doors, they are

called, Portal of l'Horta and Portal of Valencia (or of Nules).

Sadly, Mascarell underwent progressive deterioration until 1995, when a special restoration plan was

approved. At this time, Mascarell was given a benefit of cultural exchange plan (BIC). However, a lack of

monitoring norms has resulted, again, in a new process of deterioration.

LOCATION

It is very easy to get to Mascarell. This town is located next to Nules, only 29 km from Sagunt. There are

various ways to go to the site: The fastest one is using the A7 and going through La Vall d’Uixò. You have to

take exit 278 to N340 direction to Nules, once in this road you take the exit 958 to Nules / Borriana. At the

roundabout take the exit to CV-18, afterwards turn left to “Via Cami” and straight on to arrive to Mascarell.

In this link you can see the map to arrive to Mascarell: https://goo.gl/maps/zE8r1

INTERESTING PLACES

One of the most interesting building is the Town Hall, dated from the end of the eighteen century, whose

proportions are small but balanced and adequate. Its parish church from the end of the seventeenth

century has interesting engravings similar to another church called “La Sang”. The wall is made of mortar,

mud and tile, in the centre of each side there is a tower. The wall has two doors, at the east and west sides.

Its shape is almost quadrilateral.

The Weather Forecast

CAN THE WEATHER AFFECT OUR MOOD?

The belief that the weather affects our mood is quite widespread. For instance, rain makes us sad, hot

weather makes us more aggressive or even more violent,... But is it true or not?

On the one hand, although it's a controversial issue, there is a physiological explanation. Exposing skin to

sunlight produces vitamin D, promoting the brain’s production of serotonin, which lifts mood. Moreover,

the higher the temperature is, the more possibilities to act aggressively. In fact, in hotter periods there are

more murders, riots and car-horn honking.

However, sunlight doesn't only influence mood. According to several researches, aspects of weather as

precipitation, temperature, humidity or wind also have a big effect on our emotions and, therefore, our

behaviour.

The current weather influences people's judgments, their moods, their emotions and even their behaviour.

On the other hand, it is important to emphasize that the weather’s impact on our mood may not be as

great as we sometimes believe. There are a lot of factors that have an influence. For this reason, we

shouldn't blame climatic conditions if we have had a bad day.

And now, the weather forecast for next week:

- Wednesday 26th

Sunny day with temperatures between 18ºC and 12ºC.

- Thrusday 27th

Sunny day with temperatures between 19ºC and 10ºC.

- Friday 28th

Not much cloudy day with temperatures between 24ºC and 11ºC.

- Saturday 29th

Interval cloudy day with temperatures between 21ºC and 11ºC.

- Sunday 30th

Cloudy day with heavy shower . Temperatures between 20ºC and 12ºC.
