Rising Stars• In Mepham high school there are a plethora of

young gifted athletes destined for the pro’s. And here they are…….

Chris Shevins is by all factors a superstar! He plays for the football team, The

basketball team and the lacrosse team. He excels in all of them leading of the teams he plays on to victory. But aside from his

athletic skills, he is also quite the character. He is admired by all of his

coaches for his sportsmanship and his dedication. He also received a scholarship for lacrosse to University of Detroit Mercy. “He’s a tremendous athlete on and off the field” said his teammate Vinchenzo Moryc.

Chris Shevins also won an award for his tremendous football skills. Now says

Shevins “ I just want to do the absolute best job I can in what ever comes my way.”

Steven Tsai is an all star. Tsai runs cross country in the fall. He was a senior leader on the team, he had great success over the season and set many personal bests. He is also a varsity wrestler, he

had a fantastic season with a winning record. He was voted wrestler of the week by his coaches in during the season for his success and dedication. Tsai now runs spring track and is one of Mephams

secret weapons. He sprints and hurdles for the team. But on top of that he is a very talented pole-vaulter, over the summer he attended Foundation Running camps to work on his pole vaulting skills.

What do his coaches and teammates think? Well no one has a bad word to say about him, a good friend

and teammate of his Zach Hoffman says “ It’s absolutely outstanding that he has such immense success, he deserves it!”. Tsai is clearly a gifted

athlete but his intelligence far surpasses his athletic skills. He is the valedictorian of his

Mepham and also is the New York state poetry out loud champion. So whether Tsai ends up in

Harvard or pursuing a career in athletics, anyone who knows him knows he is going far.

• O’s Make Big Offseason MovesManager Buck Showalter wanted to make a statement showing that his Orioles can win. This offseason the O’s imported 3B Mark Reynolds from the D’Backs, 1B Derrek Lee from the Cubs and DH Vladimir Guerrero from the Rangers. Bringing veterans into the young lineup can make the underdog Orioles contenders in 2011.

• Phillies Get Their Ace Back From A One Year BreakOne year after their ace Roy Halladay throws a perfect game and a no hitter in the same season, the Phils want more. The Phillies resigned ace pitcher Cliff Lee from the Texas Rangers. The NL East favorite is still hungry and the want another strong chance at a championship season in 2011.

• Boston Favored over Yanks due to BIG OffseasonManager Terry Francona has always had a talented team of players to work with. This upcoming season should be his best roster yet. The Red Sox landed a few superstars in Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. Look forward to the Sox being “A force to be reckoned with” this season.

• Florida 2B Traded to Division Rival AtlantaPower hitter Dan Uggla showed that he could do it all last year as his contract with the Florida Marlins expired. Another NL East team was interested in signing Uggla and the Atlanta Braves succeeded this offseason in signing Uggla and moving All-Star 2B Martin Prado to left field.

• Primetime Rays off to ChicagoThis November the Rays and Cubs agreed to a deal in which powerhouse 1B Carlos Peña and P Matt Garza away. Peña struggled last season with a batting average below the Mendoza line. However, Garza threw a no-hitter last season and is a hot commodity to a beat down Cubs team.

• Adam Dunn moves to the Windy CityPremiere major league slugger Adam Dunn was released by the Nats due his contract expiring and he was signed by the Chicago White Sox. Dunn Should make a great addition to an already strong White Sox lineup.

• Brewers strike gold in the offseason signing Greinke and MarcumThe Milwaukee Brewers have a large future ahead of them during their 2011 season. After finally putting their lineup together they have gotten some solid starting pitching in Shaun Marcum and Ace Zack Greinke. Joining their fellow rotation members Gallardo and Parra; the Brewers could be a surprise this season.

• Rays Win Some and Lose Some Essential Players The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the youngest teams in the game but this year they got some vets for their lineup. After losing franchise players to various teams the Rays hauled in both Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon.

NFL players signing with COBRA?NFL players signing with COBRA?By: Chad Marvin

Are the national football leagues finest leaving their teams to sign with COBRA? Yes they are. COBRA is an insurance company. And with was seems to be the inevitable lockout of the 2012 season, players are not only losing their paychecks but their insurance! Although some may have millions in the bank, others are young men coming off a low salary, plus rookies they will get drafted to a team and then have to go find another job. Now on top of that, players still have to stay in shape for a year and hope their real jobs come back. Now that the players have been locked out, they still have to do their jobs and stay in shape. But it is quite hard for them due to the fact that all team facilities are closed. Some players are pretty worried or at least should be. All of them are signing up for COBRA but star players like Arian Foster coming off a rookie season with the minimum salary will have trouble paying these bills.

Of course a lot of people don’t feel too bad for millionaires but there still be a lot of younger players that don’t have millions in the bank. And of course how can anyone factor out the individuals leaving their prestigious universities behind to enter the draft early. These young men for once in their life wont be able to rely on their talents to keep them afloat. In the mean time college players like Casey Mathews ( Brother of star linebacker Clay Mathews) coming out of Oregon said he will just try and stay in shape training with his brother. While this is great keep in mind that a surplus of athletes be they young rookies or college athletes don’t have such lucky advantages. So for the sake of those players a deal must get done. While players pick into their wallets paying for COBRA lets just hope they can pick the lockout as well.

• Welcome to New York superstar basketball player Carmelo Anthony. A three team trade last month including the Knicks, Nuggets, and Timberwolves sent former MVP Anthony to the Big Apple.Already making a big impact in New York Melo has bigger plans for his new Knicks team this year.

• Last February after much dispute between many teams including the Knicks, Nets, Nuggets, T-Wolves and Lakers the deal was finally made that sent Carmelo to New York. It was not such an easy trade to accept in the eyes of Knicks fans. It’s all well and good that the Knicks got Anthony, Billups and Williams but they had to give up a few players. Among them were point guard Raymond Felton and young shooting guard sensation Danilo Gallinari. This trade was stirring up a lot or controversy because many fans saw Stoudemire and Gallinari being the face of the franchise. Obviously that is no longer possible having the Knicks traded Gallinari. This big has shown it’s positives and negatives thus far with the Knicks consistently putting up a good score and having Stoudemire and Anthony share the spotlight. Anthony released a statement to the associated press saying, “Look out for us in the postseason, the Knicks are goin’ all the way baby!” After having said this statement obviously Melo isn’t shy about his thoughts about New York and their chances to make it far in the playoffs this season.

• Upsets- Clemson over West Virginia. Washington beating North Carolina in the second round. Missouri over Cincinnati. Penn state over Temple. Michigan State over UCLA.

• Our final four- Syracuse vs. Duke & Louisville vs. Wisconsin

• Our championship – Duke vs. Louisville, with duke coming out on top as the champion.

• Something to think about- Although Jimmer Freddette is a fantastic player, don’t expect BYU to be lifted past the second or third round. BYU suffered a tremendous loss with their big man Brandon Davies being suspended after breaking school rules. Without a big man to plug up the center, don’t expect BYU to get past an underdog team like St. Johns.
