Church School Calendar Christ Church Bronxville Turned into a Big Top

On Friday, February 6, Taylor Hall was turned into a three-ring extravaganza as CCB welcomed the Amazing Grace Circus from Grace Episcopal Church in Nyack.

AGC is the tri-state’s only year-round, all-youth circus, and is an interactive experience. AGC youth troupe members and Ringmaster Mr. Amazing (Carlo Pellegrini) taught children of all ages how to juggle balls, balance on globes, work the rola bola, perform classic clown routines, master acrobatic adagio acts, walk on the tightwire and

perform human pyramids in their very own circus. Then, at the end of the evening, the AGC Troupe performed acts from their upcoming new show.Proceeds benefited the All Our Children initiative at the Episcopal Church’s General Convention in Anaheim this summer.Though on a Friday, the circus was part of Christ Church’s ONE Tuesday series, monthly all-parish get-togethers featuring dinner, speakers and entertainment.

EYCPilgrimage to the Taizé Monastery

From February 13th-22nd Krista Miller and Father Bird led the Episcopal Youth Community on their annual trip to the Taizé Monastery in France. The trip began with two fun-filled days touring Paris. The group visited famous sights such as Sacre Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, the Paris Opera and the Champs Elysee. The teens were thrilled to see these famous sights, experience French culture and get to know one another better. After the jetlag had ceased the group boarded a train for Burgundy where the Taizé Monastery is located.

Founded in 1940 by the late Brother Roger, Taizé is the spiritual home to over one hundred brothers from more than 25 nations. Their religious backgrounds range from Roman Catholic to various Protestant

traditions. Leading lives of celibacy, simplicity, spirituality and community, the brothers dedicate

their lives to reconciliation among all Christians. This strong message of love draws tens of thousands

of young people to Taizé each year.

When the EYC arrived at Taizé they were thrown into monastic life alongside 600 other young people. Every

day the group attended church three times, went to Bible study with one of the brothers and developed close

friendships with teens from all over the world. They also did their part to make sure that Taizé runs efficiently. The EYC

cleaned all of the pots and pans after lunch every day, cleaned toilets and put up many tents in preparation for the 7,000 people

who will be there for Easter.

The monastic routine of prayer, work and play over the course of the week changed each and every participant on the trip. What began as a simple cultural experience ended up being a time for the teenagers to shed stress about school and the pressures of adolescence. In the absence of those things the EYC encountered the very real presence of God. Every single teen left Taizé having a greater under-

standing of who they are, a greater sense of God in and around them and an under-standing of how important the support of religious community is. They returned to the United States with a deeper sense of their relationships with God and ready to practice their Christianity more fully at home. -Krista Miller

Dinner with Bishop TengatengaOn Monday evening, February 23rd, the Vestry and Outreach committee welcomed the Rt. Rev. James Tengatenga, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Malawi, to dinner at Christ Church. Bishop Tengatenga is an eloquent speaker and passionate advocate for his people. He is also a compelling leader in the Anglican Communion. Also in attendance were the Rt. Rev. Catherine Roskam, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of New York and her husband, and Irene Mhogolo, wife of the Bishop of the Diocese of Central Tanganykia in Tanzania, home of our partnership with Carpenter’s Kids.

Rounding out the guest list were David Kalal and Susan Cotter of St. Mark’s New Canaan, whose Outreach Commission hopes to support our efforts in Malawi; John Springer and Cindy Malin, who traveled with Mo. Malin to Malawi last summer; Canon Kris Lee who runs the website for the Southern Diocese of Malawi; and Sherrye Henry of Episcopal Relief and Development. ERD is supporting Christ Church Bronxville and Love’s Harvest work in Permaculture and Women’s Empowerment in Malawi.

The evening was both moving and fun. Kids from Young at Arts kicked off the dinner with song and dance to honor the bishops. We were able to share stories and share a meal before watching Mother Malin’s video of her trip last summer (see link on CCB’s webpage). Afterwards, Bishop Tengatenga spoke at length about why he encourages partnerships like ours designed to support mothers and priests: those groups who feed and comfort, educate and inspire, galvanize groups and husband resources. Malawi is one of the more densely populated African nations with very little land, so our Permaculture efforts which maximize sustainable and wholesome food production is key to the future of all Malawi.

Stay tuned for our next Malawi partnership project: “Pig Tales,” a Bronxville-wide women’s empowerment project.

-Kate Malin

Ash Wednesday February 25th was Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting and penitence, the gateway to Lent. The ashes we received remind us of our mortality, and our coming to receive them is a sign that we will make a sincere effort to cleanse our lives of sin and put God first. Ash Wednesday calls us to put aside pride and choose humility. It calls us to acknowledge our failings and amend our hearts in the comfort of knowing that we are loved.
