An Introduction: Who Are We?

Wandering RosePopular, Experimental and Independent art - each of these labels calls to mind a plethora of categories in media. Wheter it’s Pop music, Experimental theater, Independent film, Salvador Dali, Alvin Ailey, or Janeane Garofalo, all of these artists and genres fall under those three labels. We like that.

Wandering Rose wants to encourage and showcase the many superlative Napa artists who create in these and other innovative categories.

We challenge artists of all disciplines to work together on establishing a cohesive arts community in Napa; one that fosters a sense of collaboration among the various media and obliterates the seeming sense of isolation current artists in Napa suffer.

The Spinning CompassThe idea for an official Wandering Rose publication had likely been floating around since the conception of the organization itself. Since then, it has been nothing more than a recurring thought. Today, a crew of four volunteers have finally bit the bullet and taken on the responsibility of manifesting the ideas of Wandering Rose into a finely written and visually presented format; The Spinning Compass.

The Spinning Compass exists to document and present the artistic endeavors of our kindred spirits within the Napa Valley and beyond. This magazine seeks not only to report on the current state of the alternative art world in our seemingly dull little valley, but it is also a means unto itself as a platform for design and illustration.

From everyone involved with Wandering Rose and The Spinning Compass, we hope you enjoy the work we produce and present in these pages, as well as in every event we sponsor and produce. We encourage each and every one of you to do as we have: get involved and contribute to the development and progression of an artistic scene in the Napa Valley in your own personal and sincere way.

Cheap Dates For Cheap SkatesA Guide To Dating In Economically Difficult Timesby Sirena Schuckers

The beauty behind dating a person is that you (more than likely) enjoy spending time together. Whether it's seeing Indie films, driving to Berkeley for shopping and crepes, or seeing your favorite folk artist perform live, you do it together and you become closer. But now the money has run out for a variety of reasons, quite possibly including that you've been struck by the hard economic times, rising costs in just about EVERYTHING have really taken a toll on your cash flow, or quite simply, you forgot to ask for Daddy Moneybags as your father.

Whatever the reason may be, what the hell are you supposed to do now? Despite the myth, not all of us living in the bay area come from wealth and wineries, and unfortunately, many of the activities in this area are geared for tourists with a ton of cash. This is probably going to force many of you to change your mindset on the phrase "cheap date" if you plan on keeping the relationship fresh, fun, and not a costly endeavor. For too long "cheap date" has been used to describe someone who generally can be deemed a louse, takes you to some shit-hole diner, shows you a terrible time, AND to top it all off, can't even be held accountable for half the bill. Let's take a step back and call this person for what they are: a loser, a derelict, a jerk... a multitude of adjectives can be used, but no longer should cheap date be included. Instead, think of it like this: unless you're some kind of gold digger, you're probably not in it for the money, and the cost of the date shouldn't matter so long as you're having a great time.

Now is the time for a sense of adventure and some planning. We happen to live in a beautiful valley with many places to hike to, and unless you're dating a priss (be it male or female, that's your problem and not mine), I'd say it's time to embark on high adventure into the wilderness. Go out and explore the ruins in American Canyon, pick wild blackberries from Skaggs Island, or hike up to the Palisades in Calistoga and make love in a field. While the weather still permits it, take advantage of a picnic in the park, or search online for ideas for a scavenger hunt; it might sound hoakey to some, but sleuthing around town for obscure items can really allow the youthful side of a relationship to take over the stale aspect.

For these awful rainy months coming up, it's time for some DIY (Do-It-Yourself for those challenged with acronyms). Go and paint that chair that's been sitting in the corner of your room for ages a new color with some sweet patterns. Volunteer at a shelter and be worthwhile citizens. Take those blackberries you picked and make a kick ass pie. Pick up an instrument and learn together. Recently my boyfriend and I picked up some materials from a craft store and made jewelry. Talk about an endearing moment; with our matching studded leather arm bands, we can now take on the world together. Be creative; when the planet falls apart and we're stuck hunting and gathering, there will be nothing more important than being able to enjoy the simpler times with the one who makes your heart flutter.

Remove your comfort from the pedestal that you’ve been stashing it on

Because hiding things never gave pride in things.

And things can grow wings and wings to produce all the dreams

But dreams don’t become realities

Upon the basis of technicalities.

And humans only fuck up due to our everyday normality.

By far, its what we are

Just animals living in humanity.

Try to pick it apart, it’ll result in insanity.

The vanity is what is left over when you pretend it doesn’t exist

So persist in trying to win it all.

Run the race at your own pace

Cuz the guy on your left is falling behind

and the guy on your right is in his own state of mind

Trying to shine

Now don’t become preoccupied.

Go outside and enjoy the ride

It’s not black and white,

There are oh so many shades of gray to lead the way.

Please pay attention-

all eyes this way-

Don’t bother to listen to what I say

Beyond cliché

And today was just a fuck it day.

Yep, A Fuck It DayBy Samantha Andrews & Cole Armstrong

Page 11: The Spinning Compass Issue One

Let there be light

I need some divine inspiration,

Don't change the station

God will be right back with an important message from our nation.

Something of an incantation

A bit like alliteration,

So don't hasten, or be steadfast cuz life will let you roll on past.

The single truth that will be told

When our lives become one with the fold of hopes and dreams

While we’re bursting at the seams

With the things that we hold dear, my dear,

Lend me your ear

For I have something to say in a whisper,

It couldn't be crisper,

Hear the wavelength listen to the beat of the mouse's feet

Pitter pattering across the street with no signs

Across the painted lines and into the gutter, never to mutter another word.

We’re upside down and I can’t feel the blood rushing to my head,

Is what she said.

“They” told me not to feel it.

This is the same “they” who run OUR everyday lives

Like the royal WE. “They” say its going to rain toady

And “They” say that your cell phone will explode if you talk on it while pumping gas. But “They” don’t control the weather.

A Free Mind

I believe that we as humans should be allowed to have a free mind, a free spirit. We should not be afraid to have a free mind, although it's understandable as to why they don’t feel its safe to budge from their mindset at the time, unless they already are free minded and free spirited. We shouldn’t have to feel constricted after not only everything that we have done as a person, but voice what we think & feel with moderation. It doesn’t matter what type of job you have, whether you work in the fastfood, caregiver, a teacher, nor a scientist, to working in the law & business, but especially in a field like Law or Business.

Because we all have a weird side to us, yet some are more afraid than other’s to show it, maybe due to what they have been surrounded by their whole lives, the way they were raised, or it could just be something that has influenced them from their past. And sure the older we get, the easier it is for life to make it hard on us, but whatever and whoever points out that we should stay in our worlds of "normality", ignore them. Who says that we should not teach our students and kids the REAL truth about drugs, sex, sexual orientation, stereotypes and just life in general. Who says that we should be stiff with the suits that we’re in. We are supposed to act "normal".

With those years gone by, they are most typically filled, or going to be filled with heartaches of all kinds, losses, some new conflicts in your life that you resolve/don’t resolve, discovery of yourself &etc. But that doesn’t mean we should refrain from getting past those time’s & not look toward our future live with those without an attitude that keeps us high-spirited, or an at-ease life style, whether we choose to or not. Because there will be times where we will have something that as a human, have to deal with, but its best to move on from, for the most part. Not something to forget, but remember that was something that we went through, and this is the way the way I have been effected by this.

A World of Contentment

A man...wearing a light blue sky colored shirt, as soft as a motheres touch. Wearing some comfy sandles right below his blue checkard shorts with white slanted lines running doen and across and all the way around with ofcourse. Some squares running through the streams of the lines. He closes his imaginative turqoise views, just like diving right into a dream. Being on your own road to inner-piece is something that is not obtained farely easily, it takes alot of experience, failing & succeeding, learning from those falliing & successful experiences. But alot of willingness as well, just like anything else in life though.

Which for him its not the easiest thing to work for all the time, but who ever said that life was going to be easy. He's then surrounded by a black world of shiny red barriers with dissolving, rotating blue circles with yellow and orange shaded tipped stars, exploding very speraticly. Everything is flowing like peaceful moving clouds, that dissolves into a very light blue world. With him,his thoughts are endless, just like a batch of waves. Swifting back and forth. He sees himself in the middle of this atmostphere, and with him his thougts are endless. Like a batch of waves, swifting back and & forth & back and forth.

Though these thoughts aren't harmful but very natural witha sort of euphoric feeling. They flow but are racing through his mind a mile a minute, but at a very at-ease pace, which he finds himself in a world clouds & blue sky of happiness & contenment. With his body feeling as if he was washed up onto a shore, as he lays in the sand & water, the slight breeze with the sun setting on him, he opens up his eyes and says to himself. "Wow it feels like my future is right in front of me”.

DEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDear Bitch, Please:

I love my boyfriend of three years, but I fucked up. We’ve had our ups and downs—he broke up with me for two months this past spring because he said he was “young and needs to feel free”—but we’ve always worked through things. He is super supportive of me, and we’ve both really grown a lot as people together. But despite the affection and love, I just don’t feel wanted. I don’t feel like he wants to fuck my brains out like he used to. In fact, he rarely does, even when I try to initiate sex. Over the last six months, I’ve struggled with depression and not feeling sexy, and not feeling wanted is making both things worse. Last year, we talked about opening up our relationship, but I wasn’t really comfortable with it.

Long story short, I went to visit a friend in another city who lives practically next door to a former fling of mine from four years ago, and I ended up fooling around with the former fling. It wasn’t full sex, but it was highly inappropriate. And yet…it felt so good to be wanted so badly.

I feel like a terrible person for so many reasons. I told my boyfriend—he didn’t respond emotionally, and after 45 minutes he got up and left and said he would call me when he knew how he felt. I want him to forgive me, but I have a feeling he can’t. I don’t want to cause him any more pain than I already have, but I have no idea how to do that. Do I give him space? Do I go on with my life?

DEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDEAR HANNAHDear Self-Loathing Unfaithful Tramp:

Your relationship has been over since this past spring. When he broke up with you for two months, that was when it was official. It doesn't matter who initiated the getting back together. It was DEAD. In the spirit of Monty Python, it had gone to meet it's maker; it is a late relationship. You have been mourning this relationship for the past year, and now you feel bad because you felt happy with someone you can count on. He's not into you anymore and you need to learn how to handle it because you've been burying it in denial for such a long time; you've Stockholm's Syndromed yourself into thinking he's the victim. Yes, you are a philanderer, but it was OVER. You need to seriously start spending quality time with that self-loathing unfaithful tramp, because it sounds like that was your calling card even before the unfaithful tramp part came into play. Seriously. You're a big ole' bucket of Kentucky Fried Crazy if you think the person you became while in that relationship is worth trying to salvage. The only thing you should hold on to now is the knowledge you've gained. You put this guy on such a high pedestal you forgot about how much YOU play in a relationship. Plus, not feeling sexy is something you should NEVER feel; if Flava Flav can get tons of ass, so can you. So stop self-loathing and make yourself into the person YOU would want.
