DesignSheerframe systems are designed to offer specifiers the maximum choice in window styles. Three core systems provide an unsurpassed range of window options, all engineered to ensure ease of manufacture, efficiency in use, longevity and optimum weather performance.
DevelopmentThe Sheerframe brand has always been at the forefront of PVC-U window design technology. An ongoing programme of product development has included market leadership in the introduction of lead-free stabilisation and pioneering of Zero Carbon technologies.
Production Sheerframe Ltd’s production facilities house state-of-the-art technology for the design and manufacture of window and door profile systems and curtain walling.
ISO 9001 registered, Sheerframe not only designs its own systems but it also produces much of its own tooling, blends its own material and applies the most rigorous procedures in extrusion, to maintain total control over quality.
Sheerframe Ltd holds substantial hardware and profile stocks and runs its own delivery fleet in order to ensure continuity of supply to its network of approved Sheerframe window and door fabricators.
SupportSheerframe Ltd offers extensive technical support to architects and specifiers. A team of designers and structural engineers, based at Nether Heage, provides assistance in the choice of appropriate window styles, with line and general assembly drawings available on CAD disk if required.
Structural engineering data on wind loading and load bearing capabilities of both window and curtain walling systems can be provided for individual applications, using computer programmes specially designed for the Sheerframe system.
The Sheerframe Specifier Support Department is available to make site visits to offer advice on fenestration issues. The most experienced specification sales force in the industry is on hand to offer advice on choice of sections and installation detailing.
Sheerframe Ltd is completely self-sufficient having in-house
toolmaking, product design, research and development and
testing facilities. Few, if any, UK-based extruders can boast
such extensive resources.
Many of the industry’s pioneering breakthroughs in the
past 35 years have originated through development of the
Sheerframe system, from widespread use of co-extruded
weatherseals and gaskets, to our current leadership in
sustainability technologies.
Specifiers have access to everything from Window Energy
Rating (WER) and Door Set Energy Rating (DSER) calculations
to security testing and full elevation and cross-sectional
drawing support to detail specific project designs.

Sustainable solutions
The UK Government is legally
committed to a 34% reduction in CO2
emissions by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
Building Regulations changes will seek
to assist in making this happen by
calling for new homes to be built to
Zero Carbon Standards.
In addition, large-scale efforts are
underway to deal with the poorly
insulated housing stock especially the
solid wall properties of which 8 million
are estimated to require upgrading.
In addition to grant aided schemes,
ECO funding initiatives will seek to
improve the housing stock over the
next 25 years. Sheerframe windows
and doors are proven to make cost
effective performance benefits which
are Golden Rule compliant and which
achieve U-values down to 0.8W/m²K.
Top energy ratings under WERs to A+
and DSERs for doors also contribute to
savings and CO2 reductions.
2016 Building Regulations changes
require new homes to be between
55 and 60% better on heat loss or
CO2 emissions than the 2006 standard
(no worse than 10 KG CO2/m2/year
for detached houses) through fabric
improvements such as windows and
doors plus affordable housing solutions.
Sheerframe is the first calcium organic stabilized PVC-U
window and door profile system in the UK. Launched
in 2005, it leads the industry in the use of lead free
materials.
Its innovative multi chamber co-extruded profile design
– coupled with high performance hardware – creates
attractive, durable, energy efficient windows which truly
stand the test of time.
That means they deliver optimal sustainability – at least
35 years of service with virtually zero maintenance. And
at the end of their long life, Sheerframe windows are
designed to recycle easily, with no heavy metals.
One day, all windows will be made this way.

temperature environments. Most other systems are
either two or three-chambered and give inferior thermal
performance.
Five chambers help towards the energy requirements in the
Code for Sustainable Homes plus, combined with Thermlock
structural foam reinforcement AND a high performance
glazing specification, can achieve U values down to
0.8Wm2K. The Sheerframe Top Reversible is part of the
classified zero carbon window range.
◆ Window energy ratings for fully reinforced frames can
be as low as Category A (WER) depending on glazing
specification - glass can be 28mm double glazed or
triple glazed in 36mm or 44mm.
Weather Tightness
Twin weather seals on the principal profiles are fused to the profile surface
and welded together, making a continuous homogeneous weather-tight seal.
Tested in accordance with BS6375 Part 1, the Sheerframe top reversible
routinely outperforms previous notions of air and water tightness.
Levels of up to 1000 pascals on air and 600 on water tightness make
this reversible design far exceed any standard specification requirement,
keeping dwellings both drier and warmer than previous generations of
product have achieved.

Ventilation
Regulations
A large range of ventilators are available to meet
the current Building Regulations, Part L/A Energy
Efficiency and Part F Ventilation.
Vents can be fitted through the outerframe or
casement, as well as overframe. Overframe
ventilation is a popular solution for newbuild
applications, and Sheerframe has an excellent
range, incorporating good air and sound tightness
when closed, as well as compliant ventilation
when open.
Building Regulations Part L/A Energy Efficiency and Part F Ventilation, England and Wales, govern decisions on the performance of ventilators. Under Part L/A, ventilators need to be efficiently air-tight when closed because the maximum air permeability of new dwellings is 10m3/h/m2.
When opened, the ventilator requires to meet Part F, which requires a minimum of 5000mm2
equivalent area in habitable rooms and 2500mm2 in bathrooms.
Sheerframe can offer a full range of compliant ventilator solutions.
CompositionVentilation systems are to be constructed of PVC-U matched to that of the Sheerframe window system, or of proprietary products available in either aluminium or PVC-U.
AppearanceDue to the range of options available, appearance can be altered to suit specification requirements, by locating the ventilator either over or through the framing.
Size/CapacityAll Sheerframe ventilation systems are designed to comply with the Building Regulations requiring a minimum of 5000mm2 equivalent area per habitable room.
OptionsSheervent is a specifically designed ventilation system, to suit all styles of window. It allows up to twice the requirements of the Building Regulations, is visually unobtrusive
being placed on top of the window. Built-in sound attenuation is also available. As there is no integral routing into the window system, this means that there is no possible weakening or exposure to the elements of the frame system.
Standard VentilatorsThese are normally located either through the outerframe or through the casement frame, to facilitate ventilation. Various types are available from Sheerframe. For further designs and details, please contact the Hardware Division.
Sound AttenuationSpecial sound reduction cartridges can be fitted to the aerated vent which help achieve a weighted normalised index of 38dB. Contact the Specifier Support Department for the details of Sound Attenuation Sheervent.

Fittings and HardwareA specialist set of hardware is provided to meet the challenges of near impregnable watertightness which also makes it extremely secure to PAS 24 and achieving the highest standards of airtightness as well as watertightness.
MaintenanceThe mechanism should be kept free of debris and sprayed with lubricant/protective coating at six monthly intervals.
Installation Particular attention should be paid to correct installation procedures. For details contact the Sheerframe Specifier Support Department.
Sheerframe flood doors are independently accredited and
Kitemarked to the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 1188-1. No
other PVC-U door system is believed to exceed the performance
achieved by the Sheerframe Flood Door at the respected test
centre at HR Wallingford with ‘no leakage’ recorded at 0.6 metre
submersion on an Inward Open Door under static test over 48 hours
external submersion. The doors also remained watertight under
dynamic tests simulating waves and rapidly moving water. French
doors are also approved with 0.001 litres ingress after 48 hours
compared to the standard pass rate of 1 l/m/hr.
Sheerframe flood doors not only hold water out but unlike the
alternative of flood boards:
• They function easily and look like normal doors.
• When locked they are fully primed to prevent water ingress.
• They are high security products achieving PAS 24 levels of security.
• They are virtually airtight as well as watertight and can be glazed
to achieve exceptional U values down to 0.9 W/m²K using
triple glazing.
Grant Aid Funding can be obtained through DEFRA for properties in risk areas
with Local Authorities, the Environment Agency and the Water Authorities all
having a statutory duty of protection in areas of high risk.
Sheerframe flood doors are also available for use in commercial and rented
properties where flood damage can be excessive. Specifiers are advised to
ensure complementary mitigation measures are used and to fit non-return
valves to individual domestic waste water systems. For added anti-flood
protection, additional measures, such as air brick covers or special flood air
bricks (which self-seal when they sense water ingress), are recommended.

Colours & Finishes
White Light oak Rosewood Anthracite Grey
Most Sheerframe window, door and curtain walling systems are available in White or various colours and woodgrain finishes.
Through-Frame PigmentsWhite finishes are achieved by adding stable pigments to the polymer, resulting in an even distribution of colour and a smooth surface appearance. Sheerblend materials are colour stable and are compounded by Sheerframe Ltd. They comply with BS EN 12608 for all aspects of long term performance. The pigment systems used have been developed following extensive natural weathering trials and artificial ageing studies over a 50 year period.
Woodgrain Foil FinishesSeveral different timber effect finishes including Rosewood and Mahogany are applied to the surface of the PVC-U.
These foil finishes meet all the requirements of the British Standard for surface coated PVC-U profiles BS7722.
Specialist ColoursVarious colour finishes are also possible, using the same foil application system. These are generally used on larger commercial projects where the impact of external colour is sought. For more details contact the Specifier Support Department.
