Reading a timetable–easy as 1-2-3!

Choose your direction of travel and look at the section of the schedule for either weekdays(Monday thru Friday) or weekends (Saturday,Sunday and holidays).

Find the location you are starting fromon the timetable. On bus timetables, the “timepoints” listed represent the major stops. Buses alsostop at locations along the route that are betweenthe time points. On train timetables, every station islisted, but trains will only stop at a station when atime is listed. If the space is blank, that particulartrain will not make that station stop.

Choose the start time of your trip. On NJTRANSIT bus, River LINESM and PATCO timetables,read down. On NJ TRANSIT, SEPTA and Amtrak traintimetables, read across. Continue to your destination.The trip’s arrival time will be noted. Be sure to read any special symbols or footnotes! They giveimportant information about your bus route or trainline. In urban areas such as Camden, Philadelphia, Trentonand Atlantic City, bus stops are usually marked bybus stop signs and many stops (such as those alongMarket St. in Philadelphia) have bus shelters. Signsmay list the route numbers of the buses stopping at that location. Be sure to check the route anddestination of the bus you want to take on both thebus stop sign and on the bus.

In suburban and rural areas, all bus stops may notbe marked. But you can still board a bus anywherealong the route where it is safe for the bus to stop.To board the bus, just signal the driver clearly withyour hand as the bus approaches.

When you board, tell the driver where you are goingand deposit the required fare. Most local/city transitbuses are exact fare only! The bus will be labeled“Exact Fare” on the outside next to the entrance door.The fare box will accept coins and $1.00 bills. The driver does not have change!

Bus Fares NJ TRANSIT bus fares are based on the number ofzones traveled between your origin and destination.The fare for a one-zone intrastate trip is $1.25.Additional zone charges may apply for longer trips.Most trips in southern New Jersey are four zones orless. If your trip requires a transfer to a second bus,purchase a transfer for 55 cents when you pay yourfare on the first bus – you’ll save 70 cents on thesecond fare! Transfers are available for intrastatetrips at the following rates: Adult - $.55Child/Senior Citizen/People with Disabilities - $.25

If you commute daily, you can save up to 35% overthe regular one-way fare by purchasing a monthly NJTRANSIT bus pass. You can use it to make unlimitedtrips on NJ TRANSIT bus routes for an entire calendarmonth for the number of zones indicated on thepass. There is an interstate pass for rides betweenNew Jersey and Philadelphia and an intrastate passfor rides totally within New Jersey.

If you travel only a few days a week, a 10-trip ticketis available at a 10-25% discount over the regularone-way fare. It is good for ten one-way trips for20 days from the date of purchase.
