History

• Born out of a vision to give medical students at UHSM a life changing elective experience

• Founders of the link Marian Surgenor and Steve Hawes

• 2006 Proposal MS and SH

• Two years of ground work

• Board “rubber stamp” January 2009

Purpose of the link

• To assist Gulu Referral Hospital and Gulu University to create an excellent health care system, delivering high quality care to the people of Gulu and surrounding districts through the delivery of education and crucially the development of local clinical educational programmes.

• FACULTY OF MEDICINE 2004

• FIRST MEDICAL STUDENTS GRADUATED 2010

• OVER 300 MEDICAL STUDENTS ACROSS THE 5 YEAR PROGRAMME

• PLANS FOR BSc IN NURSING 2011

• PHARMACY DEGREE 2011

• 16 staff long term programmes (9 from across Greater Manchester 7 from UHSM)

• 60+ staff participated in short term programmes• 11 medical students have been on elective

placement• Fully booked for electives till 2013 with some

students already booked for 2014,2015• Long term placements fully booked 2012/13

• Work closely with public health staff to design and deliver programmes.

• Continue to expand the pre team building programmes and the post debrief meetings

• Network closely with MOH in each of the countries and develop models which are sustainable by local staff.

• Continue to monitor the personal and corporate benefits to NHS from link activity.
