Online magazine Idea As a female who enjoys surfing and lives in the UK, I have come to find that there are a large number of magazines that cater for the male surfing population and only one or two that cater for the girls. These however - I feel, contain a repetitive mix of fashion-orientated content, and articles and images of warm water surfing and bikini clad girls ripping at tropical island spots. Don’t get me wrong – there is nothing like seeing images of high level surfing and reading about these stunning waves and tropical places to give us something to aim for and aspire to, but there doesn’t seem to be anything out there for those of us that spend most of our days surfing cold water - IN WETSUITS, and in challenging and inconsistent conditions and when our busy lives permit. I have an idea to create something that will be of interest and inspiration to a population of surfing females who aren’t necessarily interested in the ‘wannabe’ surf lifestyle and the commercial, overpriced fashion that goes with it, the over-the-top stereotypical language and themes that these magazines are so intent on publishing. I want to produce something that is realistic, that pushes against the stereotypes, that is interesting, educates, inspires, excites and that will give something new to women and girls don’t associate with the commercial hype.

Surf n’ Work - Chile

Chile is a country full of extremes. The political and historical happenings, the landscapes and the waves - this country is on the world’s edge, and you can feel it.

People are very aware about the fact that across the ocean, after miles and miles of emptiness, the next continent is Asia. Earthquakes happen frequently, followed by tsunamis. The continental shelf is constantly moving. The gap between poverty and richness is huge, and political awareness is common and necessary.

Everything happens in Santiago; culture, business and lots of traffic. However only a few hours away the waves are crashing along the endless, empty and unexplored coastline. Here you´ll find decent towns and small fishing villages where reality and legends of the natives melt together. It´s easy to get lost.

You find big waves, breaking on outer reefs. Many are busy though where the surf-marketing circus has already arrived. But there are also hundreds of secret breaks to explore with a good map and a 4-wheeler. But bring a really warm wetsuit and hot tea in a Thermos when it comes to going further south.

Life brought me here as a start up entrepreneur, developing a new travel platform with a government sponsored program.

In 2004 I gave up my job as an Art Director with a promising future, my friends, my apartment, my cat and my life in the city where I was born. I went back to my roots, to the country

where I’m from - Peru. I immersed myself in a life dedicated to surfing.However, living the Surf-life to the extreme made me realise that I couldn’t shut off my hunger for having creative projects and using my skills. And so began a new venture, a surf travel company SEASOUL SHELTER, that I run with my friend Concha. I´m a designer and a surfer – and have finally brought my two passions together to form a very happy balance.

One of our first stops : ChileArriving in Pichilemu was a little disappointing. The waves looked bumpy and small and nothing to surf really. I knew Punta de Lobos is usually bigger; when I asked that guy at the local surf shop in front of the beach, he just answered with a big smile: “Sometimes I hate my job” he said “ it´s perfect now in Punta de lobos, if I didn’t have work, I would be there!” My heart started pounding, we jumped back in the car, and drove off to the Punta.

Arriving there, checking the waves made me simply happy. A shoulder high, perfect point break, peeling along the rocks, with no wind at all!

I couldn’t get into my 4:3 fast enough, paddling out was freezing, the rocks, that looked really intimidating at first glance, were even kind of friendly. The whole situation reminded me of Manu Bay in Raglan, New Zealand.

We surfed the rest of the day. And then the next day. And the day after. At one point the waves got bigger and I wished I had brought a shorter board, but it was still fun to ride the longboard. Actually it’s huge fun to surf a longboard in bigger waves rather than only on flat days. Powerfull turns start to make sense and the speed is awesome.

We had so much fun in Punta de Lobos that we stayed the whole weekend. The drive back to Santiago was filled with sleepy reflections of magical stories and fun waves.

I’m thinking about going further south next. Check out some remote spots. Or go further north to do the same. The coastline is so long, driving to Iquique, which is the next well-known surf spot, would take us 19 hours. Or maybe all the way to Arica, another famous big wave spot close to the Peruvian border, 22 hours. That´s pretty far for a weekend so we’ll stick around close with our 4 wheeler.

So, what’s next in life? It’s going to be a warm winter for me in Bali. Our fledgling surf travel company Seasoul Shelter will host a surf yoga retreat in Bali, teaming up with the two amazing sea souls, photographer Ale Romo, and yoga teacher Nathalie (MALEKAI), to provide 20 days of bliss and relaxation for all those of you who want to escape

the cold and need some pleasure and beauty after a year full of work.

So maybe I’ll see you in Bali!

This was an old, used surfboard I was asked

to paint as a yoga sign for a friend’s business.

Being given completely free reign to do whatever you like is great fun and ultimately very rewarding when you strike a hit with the client. It can, however, be slightly more risky than having a fixed brief and knowing for sure beforehand that the client will be happy with the result!

This was a great chance, however, to let my imagination run free!

Yoga and surfing have complemented each other for a long time. At times, however, the idea of Yoga has had a tendency to become somewhat distorted or fragmented in the West, sometimes primarily valued or understood purely as a physical discipline. For many even, surfing is their ‘Yoga’, the oneness felt with nature’s rhythms in the ocean brings a feeling of

belonging, connection and wholeness, restoring balance and health of mind, body and spirit. In designing this surfboard my aim was to keep away from cliches of Buddhas and Yoga poses but still create a design that would be obvious at a glance that it was promoting Yoga, good feeling and all round wellbeing.

Having spent much time in India all sorts of memories came flooding back to my mind, the colours, feelings, sounds, tastes, smells and heart-bursting good feelings of being so warmly welcomed there. The generosity and spirit of the local people from every walk of life and their enthusiasm and trust in the universe in the country where yoga has it’s roots.

I hoped my design would capture this magical atmosphere, using uplifting vibrant colours and portraying a feeling of movement and infinite possibility with sari silk wafting in the breeze.

Paying homage to both Hinduism and Buddhism, I chose to mimic Sanskrit style script and use the idea of hand mudras to hold up the word ‘Yoga’. The surrounding background depicts sacred lotus flowers and buds and Buddhist Thangka painting style clouds. The wrists of the hands are adorned with ornate gold jewellery offering to illustrate the balance and integration of material and spiritual realms.

I loved painting this board and hope I succeeded in creating an up-lifting piece of ‘surf-art’, I am pleased to say the client who commissioned it was very happy.
