DSUL Bailey 545 is the newest rising star atSullivan Ranch. This outstanding female just

plain out-produced herself on her first flush, and wecouldn’t be more excited! She raised the Champion Hereford Steer at Houston

2010, two-time champion steer for Kristine Apel, and two outstanding open heifers that are going to make a majorimpact on the show circuit this summer/fall. Bailey 545 is a Midus daughter out of 145E Summit, who in return is

the dam o f Grand Slam, Hard Drive, Bases Loaded, and Sandy. Take note: this is no mistake. Just royal blood!

“Bring your tractor to school”, “bib overalls”, “camouflage”,“petting zoo”, these are but a few examples of activities that arepromoted through our primary and secondary schools duringagriculture week. In many ways these activities are advanta-geous to promoting agriculture. However, my thoughts ofthese events as advantageous are accompanied by thoughts ofmore effective ways to educate the general public and theyoung people of our generation.

A typical petting zoo, while well intended, often falls short ofhaving a true educational focus. Agriculture is a very diverseindustry. Fully 25% of the U.S. labor force is involved in anagriculture related business (Agribusiness). Agriculture is notan industry that consists of only farmers/producers. However, this is the primary image that is presented with “bring yourtractor to school”, “camouflage”, and “bib dress up” days. These events should be changed to “Agriculture ProfessionDay.” Students could choose an agriculture profession inwhich they have interest and then come to school dressing thepart. For example, one student may dress as a producer, another as a processor, perhaps a commodity broker, a finan-cial officer, or a marketer. These careers represent just a few ofthe many career choices available to students. The agriculturestudents would then research the careers or occupations theyhave chosen to portray and have a short speech or presenta-tion discussing their chosen field. These speeches or presen-tations could be given to other students who lack knowledgeof the diversity within the agriculture industry.

Far too often, when petting zoos are held, students bring incute and fluffy little animals to show the visiting patrons.Currently, animal rights groups are attacking animal agricul-ture. Groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States(HSUS) are lobbying for animal rights. They focus theirefforts on public emotions and perception, depicting mistreat-ment of all animals and inhumane harvesting of animals. They attempt to sway public perception into viewing animalsin a human sense. This is known as anthropomorphism.Perpetuating this “bunny rabbit” syndrome with petting zoosdoes not promote animal agriculture in a positive fashion.

“Petting zoos” should be replaced with animal productionexhibits. It is okay to show off a baby lamb only if the lamb isaccompanied with a mature sheep, a bundle of wool, a woolsweater, a leg of lamb roast, and lamb taste treats (meatsnacks). Get the message?! An animal exhibit explains animalagriculture and its role in society. A petting zoo just reinforcesPETA’s agenda.

To expand public knowledge and counter negative emotion-based perceptions by activist groups, we should incorporatemore aspects into the petting zoo. Before individuals reachthe animal to pet, a well designed animal exhibit will have astation set up which discusses why each animal is raised. If itis a companion animal such as a dog or cat, posters should dis-cuss the breed and its historical purpose. Of course the currentuse of that animal, even if it is just companionship, can beincluded. Animals that are raised for production purposes, which are on display at animal exhibits, should be accompa-nied by similar information. Students should discuss the careand work that goes into raising the animals, while displayingwhat their animal produces and how it is used. This should bedone while discussing the benefits of animal production tosociety.

All occupations and careers within agriculture are affected bythe negative depiction of agriculture on the environment. Therefore, groups of students should design projects toaddress environmental issues. With these presentations stu-dents can educate others about the issues and present factsthat can counter misinformed perceptions about climatechange, pollution, and agriculture based energy production(ethanol, biodiesel, methane, etc.). Student projects could bedeveloped to display unbiased and truthful facts regardingemissions produced by agriculture, in comparison with otheremission producers such as cars, factories, etc.

More and more, agriculture is shown in a negative light to thepublic by animal rights and environmental groups, and otherorganizations whose influential opinions have varying agen-das against modern agriculture. This negative image is por-trayed through media reports, controversy with activistgroups, and advertisements depicting agriculture as negative-ly effecting the environment. Society’s perception is oftendriven by emotion rather than factual infromation. The con-temporary agriculture industry is losing this battle. In refer-ence to theses battles/issues, we continue to use science in ourarguments and rebuttals, rather than emotion. “AgricultureDay” needs to be used as a way to incorporate science withpersonal experience (emotion) to educate both our farm andnon-farm youth, who will be the future leaders of our indus-try and our country.

Protecting Your Retirement Investments During a Job Transition

byMatthew E.O’Donnell,

MorganStanley

SmithBarney

The current economic and market environment has promptedmany Americans to rethink their retirement strategies. If youare experiencing a job transition—particularly if the transitionis unplanned and unexpected—such a reassessment may beparticularly important for you. While it may be tempting tofocus more on your immediate needs, you should not losesight of long-term goals, especially your retirement strategy.

Some Basic Decisions Your employer-sponsored retirement plan is likely to be a keycomponent of your retirement strategy. Because it represents akey source of future retirement income, it is important to care-fully consider your alternatives for administering these assets.During a job transition, you will usually have three options:take a lump sum distribution, leave your assets in the employ-er-sponsored plan or move your assets into a Rollover IRA.

Taking a direct, lump sum distribution—With this option, the assets in your plan are distributed directly to you in a lumpsum, which provides you with immediate access to your funds.Depending on your short-term needs, that may appear to bean attractive alternative. However, a distribution will likelyresult in substantial federal and state income taxes and a 10%IRS penalty tax, which can significantly reduce the amount ofthe distribution. Because you will be receiving the distributiondirectly, the plan administrator must withhold up to 20% of thevalue of the distribution for federal income tax purposes. Moreover, you will lose the benefit of the tax-deferred status ofthese assets, which could reduce the amount ultimately avail-able to you at retirement.

The status quo option—You can decide to do nothing, leavingyour assets in your former employer’s plan. That will protectthe tax-deferred status of your assets and allow you to transferthe account assets at a later time to a new employer’s retirementplan that accepts rollovers. But you may be limiting yourinvestment choices and control because employer plans typi-cally have a restricted investment menu and require the con-sent of your spouse before you can name someone else as abeneficiary.

Establishing a Rollover IRA—A Rollover IRA simultaneous-ly addresses the issues of taxation, flexibility and control, andmay hold significant benefits for you as a result:• If your distribution is transferred directly to a custodian,

rather than to you, the Rollover IRA eliminates the withholding requirement and penalties that may result from a lump sum distribution.

• The entire rollover amount can be invested immediately, according to the strategy you specify.

• Your assets and any earnings continue to have the potential to grow tax-deferred until you retire and begin taking

withdrawals. • You may gain access to a wider range of investment

options and more retirement planning and distribution flexibility.

• You can name any beneficiary, including a trust, without needing the consent of your spouse (although special rulesmay apply in community property states).

For example, investment products in an employer plan areusually limited to mutual funds and company stock. With aself-directed Rollover IRA, you can work with your financialprofessional to structure a portfolio using stocks, bonds, annu-ities and other investments utilizing an asset allocation1 that iscustomized to help you meet your retirement investmentobjectives. And your retirement strategy can be further tai-lored with a wider range of beneficiary selection and distribu-tion choices.

Consider Consolidation This may also be an excellent time to deal with multiple IRAsyou may have opened over the years, and with account bal-ances you may have left in the plans of former employers.Together, these assets may represent a significant sum. Thereare good reasons to consider consolidating them all in aRollover IRA:

• Comprehensive investment strategy—It can be difficult to maintain an effective investment strategy—one that accurately reflects your goals, timing and risk tolerance—when assets are spread among multiple financial institutions. When you consolidate, your financial professional can help you ensure that these assets are part of your overall asset allocation strategy that is reflective of your cur-rent financial situation and long-term retirement goals.

• Greater investment flexibility—A self-directed IRA generally offers you the ability to choose from a wide range of investment products, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities and more.

• Simplified tracking—It is easier to monitor your progressand investment results when all your retirement savings are in one place, because you will receive one statement instead of several. That simplifies your life while protect-ing the environment.

• Lower costs—Reducing the number of accounts may also reduce your account fees and other investment-related charges.

Dealing with one account rather than several also simplifiesthe distribution process—including complying with complexminimum distribution rules when you reach age 70½.* Andyou avoid the risk of losing track of your retirement accountsor access to the account assets should your former employermerge with another company or go out of business. Yourfinancial professional can help you assess your alternatives soyou can make decisions based on what’s best for you. You mayfind that this time of transition holds benefits for your retire-ment assets.

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - June ‘10Greetings from the Oklahoma Club Calf Association! Spring isfinally here! All that moisture we endured this winter has surehelped our pastures provide a beautiful green backdrop for allthose new calves that have hit the ground.

Those kids that covered masses of ground following the show cir-cuit had lots of opportunities to participate in OCCA sanctionedshows. Members chasing points fought hard in some of the worstand coldest weather I have ever seen, while still having the time oftheir life.

Great memories were made at our Beef Expo which was huge suc-cess with entry numbers holding steady. We expected the econo-my to impact participation and sponsorships. But parents andsponsors spare no expense when it comes to providing goodopportunities for our agricultural youth. A special thank you goesto our new Platinum Sponsors, Cherokee Trailers, Cinch, andCruel Girl which join long-standing Platinum sponsors, EliteTrailers, and Purina Mills.

OCCA welcomes some new faces to the board of directors. We areexcited about the fresh ideas these folks bring to the table and havealready implemented some of their suggestions.

There are several events on the horizon of which OCCA memberscan take advantage. The OJCA Preview Show, which serves as agood junior national preparation opportunity, is the first weekendin June. We will once again sponsor the Wanted Ones Sale duringthe Tulsa State Fair. This is a great opportunity for club calf con-signers to provide an excellent selection of show calf prospects tohard working feeders and talented showman.

And to all the showman, good luck and safe journeys as you hitthe road. I look forward to seeing you in Stillwater in June.

Sincerely,Tim B. Stidham, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com

This year OCCA is pleased to acknowledge as Platinum sponsors sev-eral companies who have chosen to put their money where their heart is – with youth inthe cattle business. Please join us in thanking long-time supporter Purina Honor ShowChow for another year of support to our organization, also returning this year is EliteTrailers, and new to OCCA in 2010 are Cherokee Trailers and Cinch & Cruel GirlClothing.

In addition to the sponsors above there are numerous other sponsors who contribute toour ability to operate one of the most competitive show circuits in the nation. These folkshave a thorough understanding of our cattle shows and our member/exhibitors. Thanks toBlue Ribbon Show Supply, Show String, Sullivan’s Show Supply, Bob HeidlagePhotography, The Show Circuit Magazine, and the many cattle breeders, families and individuals who support our organization with their money, time, and talent.

An award designed to recognize overall individual excellence and achievement in the exhibition of beef cattle. This award considers OCCA junior exhibitors involved in exhibiting steers, breeding heifers and beef show-

manship. While each of these aspects is individually considered, the award places emphasis on the well round-ed individual who is involved in two or more aspects of beef cattle exhibition. Ideally the Purina Premier

Exhibitor is an accomplished showman who is equally knowledgeable about breeding and market animals.

The Sunrise Award was established in 1988 to honor the memory ofPatty Davis, a charter member of the Oklahoma Club Calf Associationand Junior Board Secretary in 1987. Known as fun-loving, hard-work-ing, determined and kind, Patty was the 16 year old daughter of Tedand Sandy Davis. She was a champion showman throughout the coun-try and an enthusiastic supporter of livestock activities in Oklahoma. After her death from injuries received in an automobile accident inDecember 1987, Patty’s family and friends established the SunriseAward to recognize family effort, teamwork, and accomplishment inthe show ring. The Sunrise Award is given each year to a family thatexemplifies these values.

The MCCA is not-for-profit. This program has been created with only the best intentions for junior exhibitors inmind, but programs such as this are only a success if they receive support. Please feel free to contact any of the

MCCA committee members below if you are interested in joining or have any questions.

August is just around the corner and the MCCA could use your help!

We are looking for people who believe in the youth of tomorrow and who understand the positive impactthat exhibiting livestock can make. Show the junior exhibitors how proud you are of them and all of theirhard work by becoming a MCCA sponsor. The more sponsorships we receive the more kids we can reward. Please consider becoming a MCCA sponsor today! There are a couple of ways to show your support:

1. Do you have a farm or business that you would like to advertise to the many families across the state that views our website? Then purchase a link… for only $100/year!

2. Make a monetary donation in the name of the award ceremony to be held during the State Fair in Sedalia this August.

3. Donate an item that can be given as an award.4. Sponsor a specific breed award - or - the top prize of all… the overall exhibitor award!

We are a non-profit organization created to “give back” to the junior exhibitor. 100% all of donations willbe awarded to the kids. Please contact one of us to become a MCCA sponsor.

cle Today’s DonorIt is very common in a production sale lineup to advertise

donors as a separate listing. “Twenty show heifer prospects, 15bred heifers, and five donors” is a typical description of femalesin a sale offering. But what is the definition of a donor?

Most people define a donor as a cow that has had one or moreoutstanding progeny, and has been flushed to make multipleoffspring for the next calf crop, normally through embryotransfer (ET). Often these cows are held back from gettingbred to be flushed multiple times, sometimes for longer than ayear. These donors tend to exhibit a more advanced BodyCondition Score (BCS) because they have less nutritionalrequirements than if gestating a pregnancy or lactating on aregular interval. Typical perception of a donor is a slightlyoverweight, open cow that has an elite set of offspring on theground.

“Our business revolves around donor females on a daily basis,”says Jared Knock, Sales and Marketing Director for Trans OvaGenetics. “We see the definition of a donor changing as tech-nology allows us to create progeny in multiple ways.”

The type of females that are considered donors has expandedgreatly with the increased use of in vitro fertilization (IVF).IVF is an alternative to ET for producing embryos from elitefemales. In an IVF procedure, unfertilized oocytes are recov-ered directly from the ovary, fertilized and cultured in a labo-ratory. These embryos are then transferred into recipients onthe same biological schedule that ET embryos are transferred.

One of the great advantages of IVF is that embryos can be pro-duced from pregnant cows or heifers.

“Follicles are continuously generated on the ovaries through-out gestation so they may be harvested from an animal that isbred,” explains Knock. “A trained IVF technician can success-fully collect oocytes from a pregnant animal until she is 90-100days into gestation.”

Recently, many breeders have identified elite females withintheir herd that could be potential donors. But, rather thanmake the choice between making embryos from these femalesor breeding them for their earliest calving dates, they now cando both! That is a powerful, paradigm-shifting breakthroughthat is now a reality thanks to the advantages of IVF.

An especially valuable part of every operation’s herd is its stringof show heifers. Those that stay bred and have a calf early inthe calving season tend to remain more productive in the cowherd. Furthermore, it is an advantage during shows late in thefall to have these heifers displaying reproductive developmentthat accompanies late term gestation. It is now possible to havepregnancies gestating from elite show heifers while they simul-taneously achieve their greatest successes in the ring. Thisbreakthrough will make for some interesting ringside conver-sation in the coming years. Taking the opportunity to performIVF on your pregnant females may change your personal def-inition of a donor.
