Dear Friends,

Lent, the time of penitence and spiritual self-examination, is typically thought of as a stark time, one in which the Alleluias in church are silenced in favor of the Kyrie, Lord have mercy. Afterall, we are following Christ into the wilderness of temptation and trial, and ultimately to the crossof Holy Week, as we prepare our hearts to receive resurrection on Easter. One of the common Lenten Psalms is the familiar Psalm 51:

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. (Psalms 51:12)

Joy is our goal at Lent. We don’t tend to think that way, but I believe it’s helpful to remember thewhat and why of our work as we do the heavy-lifting of our faith. Dianne Bergant wrote in 2003:

The phrase “Give it up!” signals two very different practices, which are part of twoequally different occasions. A VIEW FROM A PEWBy Don De Vries

As we move through Lent, I have to admit that I find thisseason of the church to be uncomfortable. I am forced toconfront the fact that I am not the perfect image of God that Iwas created to be. None of us, of course, is perfect in God’s

eyes. As Jesus said of the Disciples on the Mount of Olives asHe was praying just prior to his arrest by the temple police, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh isweak.” True Christians want to be perfect in God’s eyes, but our human natures just don’t havethe strength to carry out the desires of our spirits. How can we, then, ever reach the level ofGod’s expectations? This is our dilemma, and not just during Lent,

We aren’t the first people to experience this frustration. In Luke 3:9, John the Baptist told hisfollowers to “Bear fruit worthy of repentance.” Like them, we are to change, that is, to repent ofour sins, and to give evidence of repentance by living as though we are no longer imperfect inGod’s sight. We have been perfected through the death andresurrection of Jesus Christ. Believing this puts us on the rightroad to eternal life, but then we need to live as God’s perfectedpeople.

Jesus simplified the job of repentance by condensing BiblicalLaw into two commandments: Love the Lord your God with all, your heart, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as youlove yourself. Jesus could say this because He is theembodiment of the love of God. In John 3:16, we are told the“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but haveeverlasting life.” It is love for God, and love for others, that is the fruit of repentance of whichJohn The Baptist speaks.

In light of this, we have to examine our attitudes toward God, and toward other people. Weknow that through faith in Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven by God’s grace. This requires thatin true humility, we acknowledge our sins, allow God to rule our lives according to His word, andremove our own egos from the equation. We need to trust God and His word to give us thestrength of spirit so we can live as He made us to live. It comes down to having faith that Goddoes love each one of us. When we experience an adjustment of our attitudes and our dailyliving reflects the change, we will be bearing the fruit worthy of repentance.

Coming to this realization, my journey through Lent will be different this time. I know that, comeEaster, I can rejoice in my salvation. But until I get there, some soul searching and attitudeadjustment are in order. I need to be bearing fruit worthy of my repentance, and of my salvation.I can’t have an “I’ve got mine” attitude. I have to live so that I do a better job of presenting God’slove in everything I do. I must trust Him to do the leading, and to give me the strength to follow.I think you do, too.

A Note from the

Gilead Music DepartmentMarch 2012

February seems to have had its share of ups and downs for our musicians.Bronchitis, pneumonia, back pain, strep throat, colds and stomach flu have allseem to have landed in the Music Department. Fortunately, everyone seems tobe on the mend. We welcome back, Annina Celli from her winter hiatus in Floridaeven though her early return was because of an ailing pet. Our sympathies go out

Annina & her family.

We want to give thanks for the birth of Benjamin Howard, the wee son of Mariah & John Warren, born Feb. 6, 2012. I’m speculating as to whether he will be a tenor or bass. Right now, he’sprobably a soprano! Congratulations to this wonderful family!

Last Wednesday, Gilead’s Senior Choir joined with the Drew Senior Choir in an Ecumenical AshWednesday Service at Drew Methodist. It was wonderful to look out in the Congregation and see somany “Gileadites”. As one of the Drew choir members said, “we make beautiful music when we jointogether”. Gilead Youth Group News

March 2011

Dear Parents of Gilead Youth

Lent refers to the weeks leading up to Easter; how one uses this time will vary, althoughtraditionally it is a time to reflect , and renew our commitment to God. We often feel the need topartake in a sacrifice and "Give Up" something during this time. I did this growing up and wecontinued the tradition with our children when they were young. I do remember one year when Iwas 10 however, I decided to commit to attending mass each AM during Lent. This involved megetting up an hour earlier each day, walking to church and returning home before I again walkedthe same route back to school each day. Somehow when you gave something up you couldhave private slip-ups. But telling everyone you would go to church each day, there could be noexcuses because, there would be lots of comments from the siblings, parents and friends. Thiswas a HARD TASK to complete for a 10 year old but I did it.

I think each approach to Lent has merit. I think if we help our children deny themselves ofsomething they enjoy it will help them realize how blessed they are with all the wonderful thingsin their lives. If we help our children add a task to their routines each day it can build disciplineand structure. Either way Lent is the perfect time to ask them: How hard is it for you to showyour faith today? Is this a “What Would Jesus Do” moment? Perhaps together as a familyLent can be a time to join forces and embark on a challenge.

Warm RegardsFran

theme with them during “Time for the Young at Heart”.

The children recently brought home a calendar for the year to remind them what to bringeach month. Please help your child to remember to bring this important offering for ourfood pantry ministry. The March theme is paper towels

The calendar is also posted on the Church School Bulletin Board by the Church School entrance.

Brewster Ecumenical Service Partnership

The Brewster Ecumenical Service Partnership (BESP) provides housing during the winter months tohomeless men and women. Several Brewster churches take turns week by week acting as the shelter.Additional churches help by providing suppers and overnight volunteers. Gilead partnered with our sisterchurch in Croton Falls to cover the second week in February. Gilead took the 9th to the 12th. Our youthgroup volunteered for Friday night providing a Valentine's Day feast complete with cards and candy. Thegentlemen in the shelter that night loved it and BESP was very impressed.

Thanks for excellent meals also go to Gwen and Marty Schuldt, the Gould family, and Paul and JoanFrancis, as well as Phil DuBon for spending a night in the shelter. It is unclear as of this writing as towhether the services of Gilead will be needed again this winter. Keep an ear open in church for anyannouncements.

Groundswells: “a broad, deep, swell or rolling of thesea, due to a distant storm or gale or any surge ofsupport, approval, or enthusiasm, especially amongthe general public.”

Session met on Tuesday, February 14th at 7:30 PM. The meeting began with a scripture reading andprayer, as chosen by the pastor..

After a prayer, Session then discussed the following:

In December, there were 20 pastoral care visits and 16 pastoral phone conversations, with ourpastor attending two Presbytery functions.

Gilead served communion on February 5, 2012.

Charlie Cole visited us to report on the completion of the kitchen, asking that we think carefullyabout how to maintain it now that it has been remodeled so nicely. A suggestion was made tolook into reviving the Women of Gilead (WOGS) to see if they could help.

Tim O’Connor visited Session to report on the plans for his Eagle Scout project, which willinvolve shelving in the Food Pantry, refurbishing the playground equipment, and fixing thesmall sign on Church Street.

Newly elected Deacons Renae Lent, Cindy Cole-Briley, and Lindsay D’Ascoli were examined forordination, as was newly elected Elder Phil Engler, who has served before. They all spokeabout their deep faith and commitment to Gilead. Session unanimously agreed to approvetheir examinations, welcoming them to these new roles of service to which they were called.

The financial report was given, showing a much smaller deficit for January than was to beexpected (57% less).

Margaret Karell was elected chair of Nominations for 2012. Lisa Vandenberg has graciouslyagreed to chair Congregational Life, with Margery Amato taking over Mission.

Sunday, March 11, at 1:00 PM was chosen for the annual joint meeting of the elders anddeacons where we will discuss the preparation of our new operations manual.

Deployment: Camp Marmal, Afghanistan.

Jan left his home in Carmel on Nov. 25th 2011 for his deployment asan Army National Guard MP in Afghanistan.

After a month and a half of pre-deployment training at Fort Bliss inTexas, he arrived at his first assignment at Camp Dehdadi 2 inAfghanistan. Shortly thereafter, Jan was reassigned to Camp Marmal, near Mazar-e Sharif. The camp gets its name from the nearby Marmal Mountains.

The camp is the home of the Regional Command of the International Security Assistance Force(ISAF) as well as the Quick Reaction Forces (QRF). Also there are the staff of the German ArmedForces in Afghanistan.

Additional forces from the United States, Croatia and 14 other NATO nations comprise the camppopulation of about 5000 soldiers.

From Camp Marmal, ISAF forces work in northern Afghanistan on physical security and civil/militaryprojects. Five Provincial Reconstruction Teams are also supplied from Marmal.

Only recently has Jan been able to communicate with mom and dad through email. He says theinternet connection is sporadic at best. It is cold there this time of year and Jan had to order blanketsonline. He also purchased some rugs at an Afghan Bazaar to make his space a little more livable.

His living quarters are very minimal, with no shelving or even decent lighting. A desk will be madefrom some crates and plywood. He even has to buy some lighting, as he now uses his laptop to lighthis space.

The other day Jan was involved in a mission where they were training soldiers for the Afghan army.He says he liked working with the Germans and tells us “they are all great guys and speak fluentEnglish”. On a lighter side, he tells about saving an Afghan farmer’s goat which was trapped inbarbed wire and giving water to some Afghan children.

We ask for your prayers that Jan and all of our military are kept safe and return home to us soon.Jan’s address is:

The CNS Pre-K Program is Gilead's nonsectarian schoolfor 2 1/2 to 5 year olds. Since it was founded in 1949, thePre-School has been a respected community resource forearly childhood education. Our staff consists of threeteachers and an aide with many years of experience at CNSbetween them. All are active members of the communityand volunteers in the school district.

The school offers two, three and five day programs. Theyfollow the same calendar as the Carmel Central Schooldistrict.

In preparing a child for Kindergarten, their philosophy is teaching the whole child to grow. Theyprovide a daily routine balanced between academic skills and lessons, crafts, free and structured playtime, music, story time, computer time, snack, and outdoor activities on the large playground.

The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the area kindergarten teachers to best prepare thechild for kindergarten and instill an enthusiasm for learning in a fun loving environment. Utilizing theteam teaching method, three teachers give a student to teacher ratio of approximately 8 to 1.

For children scheduled to enter public school in September of the year, we routinely prepare adetailed evaluation of Kindergarten readiness.
