Brian Hill has been a force on the Aquinas men’s basketball team for several years. As probably the case with many kids his age, Brian got a basketball hoop for Christmas when he was 5 years old and has been playing ever since. He played in recreational leagues and then middle school ball at Hephzibah. After a brief stint on the varsity team for Hephzibah High School while in 9th grade, he was moved to the JV team. Brian transferred to Aquinas High School and has been a starter since his sophomore year.

Brian, a point guard for the Irish, has set his goals high. The fi rst thing Brian wants to do is win and hopefully that will lead to winning championships. He is very driven to keep up a winning tradition at Aquinas. The basketball program has been on fi re for the last several years and Brian wants to maintain that excellence. For him, his ultimate goal is to play at the college level. He is currently being looked at by several colleges.

Aquinas has a lot of potential for a great season, according to Brian. Even though the team has lost some key veterans from last year, the current players make up the loss with great attitudes. “If we just play hard and don’t quit, we might be able to do the same thing [21-6 season] as last year” Brian states. The team is “more like a family this year. Since we don’t have the elite players from last year, everyone knows we have to come together in order to win.” Brian knows he will be an integral part of that winning formula since he is one of the key leaders. The coaches saw that leadership quality and chose him as captain during the summer. He is currently the only captain on the team.

The transition from public school to Aquinas has not been easy for Brian. “The work is different from public school. The transitions from public school classes to the “college like” classes at Aquinas have been challenging, but it has helped me out in becoming a better person. Coming in to play sports and also a leader on the basketball team has made me become a better man.” Brian has defi nitely made a positive impact at Aquinas. He says that another difference from his previous school is the higher level of competition at Aquinas. Aquinas competes in one of the toughest regions (Division 1A) and that has made the journey to play for a state championship very challenging. Being the driven athlete that he is, Brian takes it all in stride, saying, “the competition just makes you a better player.”

Junior shooting guard at Augusta Christian, Amaura Brandt, has been a pivotal mem-ber of this year’s basketball team. Some say she will most likely emerge as one of Augusta Christian’s greatest basketball players.

Amaura has been playing basketball since she was a little girl. She says “I always wanted to play basketball since I was a kid – I just remember wanting to play.” You could say that basketball is in her blood. Her father, Mike Brandt, is the Head Women’s Basket-ball Coach at USC Aiken and his love for the game has been picked up by his daughter. Amaura remembers that her dad never pushed her to play ball, but he “just encouraged me to play.”

Augusta Christian coaches say that Amaura has been a joy to watch grow in to her own. They all believe that she is on pace to break most of the women’s basketball records at the school. As a shooting guard, Amaura is a three point threat and is respected by compet-ing teams in the region. Any time you mention Augusta Christian Women’s Basketball to schools such as Westminster, Augusta Prep or Curtis, they all know about Amaura Brandt and the dominance she possesses outside of the key.

Amaura has two more seasons with Augusta Christian and a very bright future at the next level of play.
