Nathan the prophet saw what was going on, and worked with Bathsheba to be sure that Solomon became king, since earlier David had designated Solomon as king,

So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?…Go immediately to King David and say to him…Then, while you are still talking there with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words.” So Bathsheba went into the chamber to the king…Then she said to him, “My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne…’ And just then, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in…Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king (1 Kings 1.11–28).

Do you really want to know the truth? People say they want to know the truth, but when it stands right before them, they deny that it is the truth. The Jewish

Council, with Jesus right in their midst, is a supreme example of this,

As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go” (Luke 22.66–68).

Did they want to know whether Jesus was the Christ? No, but they wanted to sound as though they were open-minded. However, they had already made up their minds, and they merely sought an opportunity to hear Jesus say that He was the Christ that they might have reasons for destroying Him.

The Wisdom of George Washington: On Remembering God’s Hand in Our Nation

“I am sure that never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a Divine interposition in their affairs, then those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our Revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God who is alone able to protect them.”

Oh, Mr. Washington if you could see us now. Secular and political liberals seek to remove all mention of God from American public life! We wish that our fellow Americans could hear your words of wisdom.

May we remember the words of the psalmist, “The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people H e h a s c h o s e n a s H i s o w n inheritance” (Psalm 33.10–12).

    Church History

304: Pollio is brought before a Roman judge. When he declares he is a church reader, he is burned to death in Gibalea (later a city in Hungary). Imagine that, but during the 3rd and 4th centuries the Roman Empire persecuted the church horribly.

1731: The year that Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe and Journal of the Plague Year. Two centuries after Defoe’s death, Neesima Shimeta, a Japanese youth, will be converted to Christianity through reading Robinson Crusoe. Perhaps we need to read it.

1877: Residents of Minnesota observe a statewide day of prayer, set by Governor John Sargent Pillsbury, imploring deliverance from a plague of grasshoppers that had been ravaging their crops. Many families are on the verge of starvation. In the next two days warm weather will cause millions of larvae to wiggle to life and skeptics scoff; but a plunge in temperature on the fourth day will freeze and kill them. A chapel will be built at Cold Spring to commemorate the event.
