MESSAGE FROM BIG SIR: ROBIN DORIA (916) 580-5481

As I write this message, I am hopeful that the High Heat has ended for the summer and that the smoke in the air will dissipate soon. 2020 has been a tough year for everyone and October always seems to bring cooler fall conditions in anticipation of the Holidays. Branch 98 is moving ahead in the hope of better times. Placer county is slowly lifting its Covid-19 restrictions with the restaurants dining in and the mov-ies opening once again. It just does not seem possible that summer is almost behind us! The year is speeding along and it’s amazing to think that we have been locked down for six months, and that our

regular lives have been stood on their head. But we are fortunate that we have a strong branch and committed BEC that continues to work diligently within tremendous restrictions to try and keep us ‘active.’ and growing. I attended the first SIR State Annual Meeting last month via ZOOM and it was impressive to see how it was put together. Our new, 2021 State Jim Johnson and Vice President Stuart Williams have a lot of new 2021 activities they would like to see, such as a State SIR RV get together and a State Bocce Tournament. At the branch 98 level, we will schedule a 2021 RAMP planning meeting with Gary Carrier and Mike Flanagan to insure that we are continuing and expanding our valuable activities for the new year. If you have any ideas or requests, please let us know. We are into our third month of doing Virtual Luncheon Meetings via Zoom technology with mixed results. Kent Miller has conduct-ed a survey of luncheon participants and summarized the results for us. From this data, we are going to make some adjustments and hopefully improvements for our Oct. meeting. Please consider joining the next virtual luncheon – we would love to have you. Speaking of surveys, there is another one on the horizon. Building on our successful UCSF/State-wide SIR Survey in 2019, SIR State has agreed to participate again. The purpose of this survey, named “Perspectives on the Impact of COVID-19,” is to learn how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected your daily life and interactions with your local community and the medical community. It will like-ly be emailed in the near future, so please watch for and complete it. As in 2019, your email addresses are not shared with UCSF, and the survey will be completely anonymous. Our responses and their impact will be shared with you after the data is compiled. Some of our card playing SIR members have pointed out that during this period of lying low, that a couple of internet sites they like offer online card playing with Video and Audio. Those folks who wish to play Bridge, Hearts, Euchre, Pitch, Whist, 500, Pinochle or Oh Hell should check out www.trickster.com . Give it a try, sounds like fun! Hopefully I’ll see you at our October 14

th virtual luncheon

MESSAGE FROM LITTLE SIR: JIM GRAGG (916) 708-5154

Guest Speaker Information Mike Luken, Executive Director,

Placer County Transportation Planning Agency

Keep Placer County Moving

Residents of Roseville, Rock-lin, Lincoln, and Loomis enjoy some of the best communities in the Sacramento Region. Family-friendly neighborhoods and quick access to both Downtown Sacra-mento and the beautiful Sierra Ne-vada mountains. For several decades, Placer County has re-mained one of the fastest growing counties in Cali-fornia and our transportation network has not been able to keep up. Our roads and highways are nearly always congested, making residents spend more time on the road and less time with their families. Placer County Transportation Planning Agency has pinched every penny and scraped together eve-ry available dollar to deliver projects like the High-way 65 Lincoln Bypass and Phase 1 of the Interstate 80/Highway 65 Interchange Improvement California’s focus on biking, walking, and transit has limited funding for the types of roadway projects that Placer County needs. As one of the largest counties in California without a local transportation sales tax, Placer does not have the matching funds to compete for what’s left of state funds. Mr. Luken is going to give us an update on the sta-tus of the Placer County Transportation Tax pro-posal, major highway projects, local street & road construction, and alternate transportation options.

BRANCH 98 ACTIVITIES

Well it seems like 2020 has been a very long year. With the persistence of Covid-19 and our smoke-filled air, there aren’t many options for many of us to so-cialize. Our monthly luncheons have been impacted and many of our branch activities have been unable to resume. As your activity chair, I want to encourage all of you to stay in contact with your group and fellow members. As conditions improve the “restart” com-mittee will review each proposed plan for reopening and present that to the branch executive committee. Some group activities have reopened and we are hopeful that more will follow. Our branch prides itself on our varied and numerous activities. Moving for-ward, stay safe, and stay tuned for more information. Mike Flanagan

TURKEY BINGO NIGHT

Turkey Creek Golf Club in Lincoln notified us they have city, county and state governing authority to resume its community Last Friday of the Month Bingo Nights on a lim-ited seating basis, soon. We are in the process of asking SIR to approve restart-ing our very popular Branch 98 Turkey Creek Bingo Night activity as soon as possible. SIR approval will allow us to arrange properly distanced seating together in adjoining tables for Branch members, their spouse and guests. Prior to COVID-19 closure our group was averaging 25-30 at-tendees at these monthly bingo gatherings - becoming one our most highly attended activities. When we have SIR approval, Branch 98 BINGO NIGHT will continue as follows:

$20 per person collected at the door by Turkey Creek Self-served free soft drinks; beer & wine extra at the

bar 4 games of bingo with gifts certifi-

cate for the winners Full buffet dinner Starts at 5PM – Ends at 8PM

Seating will be limited, so to prepare for our restart: Please let me know by email address if you are interested in joining us for all the fun at SIR Branch 98 Bingo Nights. That will allow me to keep you posted directly. Hope to hear from you all, Alan Ensign, Bingo Night, activity coordinator [email protected]

Bye Bye Bocce for Now!!! By Gordon Badovick

Well, it looks like the SIR bocce ball group will not be able to resume play this year. We had hoped to begin play in August but after the Corona 19 virus cas-es started rising again in July we were advised not to plan to restart at that time. Although Placer County is once again going down in infection rates, to now go through the process to receive approval from our SIR BOD to reopen, it would not be until November that we could begin sanctioned play. Obviously, that is too late into the cold/rainy season to be feasible. Therefore, we can only look toward spring of 2021 to begin a new season of bocce ball again, assuming conditions will be favorable by then. I’ve missed playing bocce ball and I’m sure many of you share that same feeling. I will keep everyone posted when we are approved to begin play again next year. Until then stay safe, dream bocce, and enjoy the upcoming win-ter season as best you can. If you have any questions regarding bocce ball, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Gordon Bado-vick, at 916 773-5504 or at [email protected].

DREAMING OF CRUSES

Like many of you who are retired, my wife and I have enjoyed taking cruises, traveling to other countries

understanding their cultures and history. We were really looking forward to many new adventures, but unfortunately, everything is on hold now due the pandemic. Also, like many of you, we are stuck at home, hunkered down with our hobbies, reading, watching TV, etc. but that doesn’t take the place of the traveling experience. Recently, we purchased a subscription to the “Great Courses Plus.” This is an internet streaming channel that has over 500 of fantastically entertaining courses, covering dozens of categories and subjects. All the lectures are conducted by highly respected people in their fields. There are so many topics: Economics & Fi-nance, Food and Wine, Science Space, Music and Fine Arts, Histo-ry, etc. etc. In attempt to satisfy our thwarted desire for travel to other coun-tries, my wife and I have been watching several the History cours-es. Some of the courses we have enjoyed watching include Celtic World, History of Spain, History of Eastern Europe, Understanding Russia, History of Greece, and Turkey, History of India. We have traveled to many of these places and wish we had taken one of these courses first. The in-depth knowledge provided is every bit entertaining as it is educational. As I mentioned this is an internet streaming channel. It can be accessed on your personal computer, smart TV, or by using an in-ternet streaming device like Roku. To sign up for a free 30 day sub-scription go to www.thegreatcourses.com. There is a free version of the Great Courses also available from the Roseville Public Li-brary https://www.roseville.ca.us/.

The Wine Group

It is five o'clock but we're still waiting till it's a little safer for us to do a face-to-face event. While Zoom was an option, the survey results did not wholeheartedly support a computer-oriented activ-ity. So, we're going to wait a little while longer hoping that there's a break in the virus rules that will let us con-gregate in a bigger group, but still outdoors with safety measures in place.

In the meantime, since it's five o'clock, pull out the cork and en-joy a glass of wine!

Salute

Joe

FRIDAY GOLF AT SIERRA PINES

Sierra Pines has opened with several changes. There are 4 tee times reserved with a 1:00pm start. Some of the changes include the fact that there is only one golfer in a golf cart. Fellow golfers: A few of us have been playing Sierra Pines on Friday afternoon without SIR sponsorship, how-ever, we are now approved since mid August and will start SIR Golf in September. Since tee times now have to be made by multiple residents at Sun City, we’ll need to know ahead of time if you would like to play. There is still one person per cart allowed, but carts can now be cleaned and reissued. Join us for golf. Please call me. Tom Werth (916) 531-1933

An Inspirational Message

Chaplain

LEN SAMPAIO

Chaplain’s Message Once again we report that to the best of our knowledge we have no Sir members with the Covid-19 virus. As of last week our mem-ber Abe Rivera was still in the hospital with health issues. Although not allowed any visi-tors his wife did say they welcome all the prayers possible for his full recovery. We also ask good thoughts/prayers for all mem-bers that may be dealing with other prob-lems or health issues. Any of you with knowledge or concerns of other members should contact me so I may give them or their family a call. My phone number is (916) 797-9391. In news of prior member’s , one of our past chaplains’ Jim Makimoto passed away on August 25

th. Another prior member John

Erickson passed away on August 31st. Both

were fine gentlemen, active in the branch and participated in our golf programs for many years. Since many of you did not view the Zoom meeting of September 9th, I would like to repeat the Inspirational Message I quoted at that time. “My Soul finds rest in God alone. He is my

rock and my fortress for salvation. I should

not allow myself to be shaken by

things of this world.”

WHAT HARD WORK BRINGS YOU

This proves it that hard work CAN get make you happy if you have a little luck too! Every morning, the CEO of a large bank in Manhattan walks to the cor-ner where a shoe shine is always located. He sits on the couch, examines the Wall Street Journal, and the shoe shine gives his shoes a shiny, excel-lent look. One morning the shoeshine asks the Executive Director:- What do you think about the situation in the stock market? The Director asks in turn arrogantly:- Why are you so interested in that - that topic?" I have a million dollars in your bank," the shoeshine says, "and I'm considering in-vesting some of the money in the capital market."- What’s your name? “Asks the Director.- John H Smith The Director arrives at the bank and asks the Manager of the Customer Department:- Do we have a client named John H Smith ?- Certainly “answers the Customer Service Manager, he is a highly esteemed custom-er. He has a million dollars in his account. The Director comes out, ap-proaches the shoe shine, and says:- Mr. Smith, I ask you this coming Mon-day to be the guest of honor at our board meeting and tell us the story of your life. I am sure we will have something to learn from you. At the board meeting, the Executive Director introduces him to the board members:- We all know Mr. Smith, who makes our shoes shine in the cor-ner; But Mr. Smith is also our esteemed customer with a million dollars in his account. I invited him to tell us the story of his life. I am sure we can learn from him. Mr. Smith began his story:- I came to this country fifty years ago as a young immigrant from Europe with an unpronounceable name. I got off the ship without a penny. The first thing I did was change my name to Smith. I was hungry and exhausted. I started wandering around looking for a job but to no avail. Suddenly I found a coin on the sidewalk. I bought an ap-ple. I had two options: eat the apple and quench my hunger or start a busi-ness. I sold the apple for two dollars and bought two apples with the mon-ey. I also sold them and continued in business. When I started accumulat-ing dollars, I was able to buy a set of used brushes and shoe polish and started polishing shoes. I didn't spend a penny on entertainment or cloth-ing, I just bought bread and some cheese to survive. I saved penny by penny and after a while, I bought a new set of shoe brushes and ointments in different shades and expanded my clientele. I lived like a monk and saved penny by penny. After a while I was able to buy an armchair so that my clients could sit comfortably while cleaning their shoes, and that brought me more clients. I did not spend a penny on the joys of life. I kept saving every penny. A few years ago, when the previous shoe shine on the cor-ner decided to retire, I had already saved enough money to buy his shoeshine location at this great place! Finally, three months ago, my sister, who was a whore in Chicago, passed away and left me a million dollars.
