The Anaheim Ducks Fall Learn to Play Program presented by Ree-bok came to a successful close here at The Rinks – Corona Inline. The four-week session, which began on October 3, finished with an eager-to-learn and energetic group of over 25 kids attending each of the four classes.

As the sessions progressed from the first to the fourth week of October the kids were able to learn and practice fundamental hockey skills. During the first class kids learned the ba-sics of skating from Youth Hockey Director Ben Barrett. The second through fourth weeks introduced stick handling, passing, and shoot-ing respectively. Everything culmi-nated during the last part of week four’s session where the kids were able to practice all their newfound skills in a scrimmage game against each other. The scrimmage between Team White and Team Orange was an exciting one as the kids were re-lentless in their pursuit of the puck. In the end though Team White had a slight advantage and took the win.

Overall, the Duck’s latest Learn to Play program was very successful. Many people have expressed their plans to continue playing hockey through Corona Inline’s Youth Learn to Skate program, which also teaches fundamental skills for inline hockey. There are six classes left in this pro-gram, which takes place every Tues-day from 4:30-5:30pm. Minimum gear requirements include skates, stick, and helmet. These items may

be borrowed from our front desk if needed. In addition, our Youth Rec Program Winter Season will begin the first week of Janurary.

As for the Ducks next Learn to Play session, it will begin in January of 2013. That class will also be four weeks long starting Wednesday, January 9 and ending Wednesday, January 30. You can sign up online through the Anaheim Ducks web-site or through The Rinks – Corona Inline website. The Anaheim Ducks Learn to Play Program is geared pri-marily towards kids who are brand new to the sport of hockey. Those who are a little more advanced are encouraged to join one of The Rinks Learn to Skate Programs or may be placed on a wait list for the Ducks Learn to Play.

We love seeing people stick with hockey and hope to either see ev-eryone at the next Anaheim Ducks Learn to Play, Corona Inline’s Learn to Skate, or Corona Inline’s next Youth Rec Season. Thank you to everybody that attended and in the meantime keep practicing those skills!

Men’s Major and Minor AIHL TryoutsAnother AIHL Season is quickly approaching and the Corona Ree-bok Jr Ducks will be hosting try-outs for both the Elite and Minor AIHL teams on Sunday, October 28th from 8-10pm and Tuesday, November 1st from 8:30-10:30pm.

Cost is $15 for one tryout and $20 for both. It is recommended that you attend both tryout dates. The AIHL season consists of 24 games beginning in the end of November and culminating with the National Championships in Las Vegas in May. Hope to see you all!

Last season was fairly successful for both Men’s Jr Ducks teams. The

Major team took second seed going into the playoffs but lost to OC Vanguish in three games in the first round of playoffs. The Minor Jr Ducks also fell in the first round of playoffs to The Anarchy from Irvine Inline. They were able to push the series to three games but fell short in the end.

Ulitmately, the Oakland Goodlife took the AIHL Major title as they defeated the Vanquish at the Finals in Huntington Beach. The AIHL Minor Championship went to Team Vanguish from our Pacific South division.

We hope to see everybody at try-outs for another competitive season of AIHL hockey! If you have any questions email Ben at [email protected]

October’s Drill of the Month is an-other passing and shooting drill that can be used for warm-ups. The drill focuses on passing and receiving the puck while keeping one’s feet mov-ing. This is important as it allows the skater too keep his or her momentum through the entire play.

The drill is as follows:

• X1 passes to X2, who then passes directly to X3.

• X1 skates around the center circle and receives a return pass from X3.

• X1 then does a give-and-go with X4; upon receiving the last pass X1 proceeds to shoot on the net closest to where he/she started.

• The drill then repeats with X3 pass-ing to X4, who passes to X1, etc.

Benefits of The RinksBy Jarrett SoddersNearly five years ago the Ducks along with Ken Murchison, General Manager of Corona Inline, started a small, community based, hockey program to get kids into hockey rinks. Here we are today with The Rinks programs growing to three ice rinks (Anaheim Ice, Westmin-ster Ice, Yorba Linda Ice) and three inline rinks (Corona Inline, Hun-

tington Beach Inline, and Irvine Inline).

This growth is quite remarkable when considering the local market, which is dominated by summer sports. With such rapid growth comes a need to fill rink time. The Ducks and The Rinks have backed the Anaheim Ducks high school league and the IHF high school roller hockey league.

The Ducks have also helped bring the roller hockey world to Southern California with F.I.R.S World Cup being held at The Rinks and Honda Center during the summer of 2013. In addition, they are backing the “Give Blood Play Hockey” charity event to raise money for CHOC hospital, as well as playing a huge role in AAU National Champion-ships held at The Rinks - Huntington Beach. With the “Learn to Play” programs The

Rinks are able to get kids in skates and hooked on to the sport by teaching basic fundamental skills of hockey.

What the Ducks have done for Southern California hockey is truly remarkable. They have brought more exposure to inline hockey re-sulting in tremendous growth and community interest. Their con-tinued support only means great things are on the horizon for inline hockey in Southern California.

If you are interested in writing a guest piece for the Corona In-line Newsletter then please email Steven Boddy at [email protected]. Topics ranging from hockey, to broader Southern Cal-ifornia community events/news will be accepted. Thanks!
