New Year, New ImageWelcome to RHA, Where Housing Meets Home

Explaining the Residence Hall Association to your friends and parents just got a whole lot easier. When asked what exactly RHA is, reply with “it’s where hous-ing meets home.” This phrase captures the essence of the or-ganization, because it is our goal to make the on-campus living experience for residents as com-fortable and fun as possible, while also fostering academic growth. Sounds a lot like home doesn’t it? Be on the lookout over the coming semester for our re-branding campaign, month-long

advertising geared towards help-ing people understand this very goal. The campaign will include flyers, banners, social media, and shirts, with the central theme being a house outlined with the names of the twelve hall councils. While RHA can often get confusing, with an abbre-viation for everything, this will no doubt educate those new to campus. So welcome, and be sure to make yourself at home.

The August 15th program at Legion Field was a unique colloboration with UGA Housing#RHAblockparty a Social Networking Success

Social media is all around us. Most of us have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, or Tumblr, and most of us find time on them come study breaks. UGA Housing and RHA have taken notice, and this is where #RHAblockparty came into play. On Wednesday, August 15th, social media debuted in life-size. Residents were given the

opportunity to voice their wishes for upcoming programs on a gi-ant Facebook Wall and were able to “pin” ideas on an equally im-pressive Pinterest Board. Further-more, the popular game Angry Birds came to life as well, transi-tioning from a flick of the finger to an actual throw of an Angry Bird pillow into giant blocks. An interactive component of the event was also a huge

success, growing the online pres-ence of both UGA Housing and RHA. The live DJ played songs requested via Twitter. Also, using various hashtags, from those an-swering questions about the best residence hall, to the first several tweeting us with the hashtag of the year #stayconnected, resi-dents were given RHA promotion-al items. Of course, this was in conjunction with our normal give-

aways, namely food and shirts. Felicia Harris, the Univer-sity Housing Doctoral Intern for New Media, was instrumental in making this happen. To her, the event was an opportunity to let residents know that “communi-cation with University Housing doesn’t just stop after the move-in process.”

Hey residents! Don’t for-get to come on out to RHA’s 14th annual Bowling Night! The theme of this year’s program is “Rock & Roll Bowl.” This program has been a big hit with residents for the past few years, so you won’t want to miss out on your chance to get free bowling, free t-shirts and free food. This pro-gram will be held on Wednesday, September 26th from 8-11 pm at Showtime Bowling, located at 555 Macon Highway. Don’t forget to bring your Student IDs with a housing sticker! Get event details on our Facebook page, and come on out with your whole floor to have a good time.

A Message from the PresidentMallory Whitfield, Senior, begins her second year as RHA President

exec ‘N rec 2012:

The Housing GamesHunger Games themed leadership conference a

time for learning, networking, and fun

I hope the semester has been off to a great start for ev-eryone! Congratulations to the Community Council members who were elected this past month to represent their communities! I look forward to seeing what you guys have in store as the semes-

ter unfolds. Don’t forget about our upcoming program Rock & Roll Bowl at Showtime Bowling. I look forward to meeting many of you all there! As always, please don’t hesitate to let me know if you need anything. You can al-ways shoot me an email or stop

Each year the Residence Hall Association coordinates a two part student leadership con-ference that aims to educate the twelve Hall Councils on campus. This year, the educational portion of the conference was held on September 8, 2012 in the Miller Learning Center, while the more recreational portion was held on September 14, 2012 at Funopo-lis in Commerce, Georgia. For the first part, councils were asked to prepare a number of things in ad-vance to represent their commu-nities in a spirit competition. After councils arrived, they participated in a number of activities and pro-grams that ranged from teaching them teamwork and leadership, to the many skills they need to be successful throughout the year. Along with learning about what RHA does, they also learned a number of RHA traditions, such as “ride the pony” and a few chants as well. During this time,

they also networked with other Hall Councils in the hopes they’ll be able to team up throughout the year. Lastly, the communi-ties were given time to meet as Hall Councils to share and dis-cuss what they had learned as well as start planning some pro-grams for the upcoming months. The more recreational as-pect of Exec ‘N Rec is aimed at giving the Hall Councils an oppor-tunity to bond with one another before the real work begins. Once councils get to know each oth-er, they are much more likely to openly share ideas and be more excited about spending time with one another in meetings. It also rewards them for being willing to spend a Saturday learning about their positions. Overall, the Hall Councils had a fantastic time and learned a lot along the way.

A Message from the NRHH Director

Hey RHA! I hope you all have enjoyed the past month liv-ing on campus, and that you have discovered some of the many available opportunities to lead, serve, and recognize across campus while being scholastical-ly successful. I know I have had a blast in my first month serving as Executive Director of NRHH. NRHH is comprised of the top 1% of on-campus residents, and is a daughter organization of the Residence Hall Association. We are committed to promoting our four pillars of Leadership, Ser-

vice, Recognition, and Scholas-tics within the Residence Halls, and host socials, service and recognition projects, and other events throughout the semester to do so. In the coming months, you can look forward to hearing about all of the awesome service and recognition projects that are going on within NRHH. I hope that, with time, you will consider join-ing this wonderful organization!

by ben bradshaw

September Service ProjectOn Sunday, September 9th, NRHH went to the Athens-Clarke Coun-ty Animal Control, and volun-teered for a collective 30 hours. Our members got to play with the dogs and puppies there, giv-ing them the attention, exercise, and yummy doggie treats they yearned for. The animal shelter is located at 125 Buddy Chris-tian Way and accepts walk-in volunteers every day except for Wednesdays, so we would love for residents to help us continue sup-porting this community service.

Three New OfficersOur chapter is proud to announce the election of three new officers as of Monday, September 10th. Brad Burzumato was elected our new Associate Director (AD) of Membership and Recruitment. Paige Sullivan was elected our

new AD of Recognition, leaving the position of Administrative Op-erations Coordinator available to be filled by Morgan Castleberry. All three officers have already proven invaluable, and NRHH is fortunate to have their leadership.

In addition to electing new of-ficers, our meeting on Monday was focused on the importance of Service. After discussing this topic for a few minutes, our AD of Service, Onyale Dunloe, gave

Letters to the Troopsour members and other guests the opportunity to write letters to active soldiers to show our sup-port. We look forward to seeing what our Recognition-themed meeting on the 24th has in store!

October is NRHH’s Recruit-ment month, so watch out for invitations from our members to come with them to our socials,

service projects, and meet-ings and see if NRHH might be the right organization for you!

Residence Hall Studios has already had a productive Sep-tember, and we’re barely halfway through it! I worked closely with Megan Harrigan (Business Direc-tor, RHS), and we were extremely excited to get to work on the RHA Executive Board Roll Call video ever since it was announced that Exec ‘N Rec would be “The Hun-ger Games” themed. We worked hard on a script in the few weeks after school started, and planned a busy shooting schedule. Over the course of Sunday and Labor Day, RHS and the RHA Execu-tive Board worked over 15 hours to film the roll call video. In the week that followed, I edited the video to be premiered at Exec ‘N

Rec. The video was well-received and is a testament to the fan-tastic work that Residence Hall Studios is capable of doing. In the midst of editing the Exec ‘N Rec Roll Call video, RHS filmed our first talk show episode of the year, which covered such diverse topics as the Democratic Nation-al Convention, the mars rover, and the Olympics. Our five-wom-an strong panel consists of Alma McCarty, Aveana Jackson, Kelcie Willis, Kelly Johns, and Samantha German. At all RHA events, RHS is there filming the program, and Exec ‘N Rec was no different. Welcome back to cam-pus, and for all first year resi-dents welcome to the Univer-sity of Georgia! I hope your first month of classes have treated you kindly. My name is Kaitlyn Branson and I am your RHA SGA Senator. What exactly does that mean you may ask? Well I am the person who represents the voice of all residents on campus within

the Student Government Asso-ciation’s senate body. I highly en-courage each of you to keep up with the happenings of Student Government as they speak for all students on campus and deal with many issues that may direct-ly affect you. Anyone is allowed to attend senate which meets ev-ery other Tuesday at 7:30 in the MLC, and we welcome all com-

ments, concerns, and questions. In our last meeting we passed a resolution that was in favor of im-plementing an A+ grading system here at UGA. Just to clarify, when we pass a “resolution” it does not mean that it will necessarily happen but rather that it is some-thing the students here are in fa-vor of. There will be many more resolutions and pieces of legis-

lation to come throughout the year, so stay informed and stay involved, and if you ever have an issue or concern that you would like to have addressed email me at [email protected] or stop by during my office hours Wednes-day from 12:30-3:30pm at the RHA office next to Creswell.

RHA is excited to an-nounce that we will continue Sup-porting the Arts during the 2011-2012 school year. Supporting the Arts is RHA’s initiative to extend opportunities to residents to at-tend a variety of fine arts events across campus and within Athens free of charge. For September, we are excited to be partnering with the Ballroom Performance Group, which will be hosting a Fri-day Night Dance on September 21st at 8 pm in the New Dance Building near Snelling. There will also be a free Rumba lesson at 7 pm. The first fifteen residents

to answer the trivia question cor-rectly will receive free entry to the event. Responses should be sent to [email protected], and should include your first and last name, contact number, residence hall and room number. The deadline is Tuesday, September 18th at 11:59 pm. All winners will be no-tified on Wednesday by e-mail. The Trivia Question is: What UGA professor founded the Ballroom Performance Group in 1991?
